Stephen Colbert: "Why Do The Girls Go Wild, Congressman?"...
During his interview with Rep. John Mica, comedian Stephen Colbert didn't shy away from asking the tough questions.
Among the inquiries posed to the conservative Florida Republican: "Do liberals make good crackheads?" and "Why do the girls go wild, Congressman?"
Mica, who concedes he's generally viewed "as one of the more serious Members," took it all in stride.
After all, it's to be expected when you are a guest on "The Colbert Report" segment "Better Know a District," a series that each week satirizes a Congressional district and its Representative. With 14 districts spotlighted so far -- including the vacant New Jersey 13th, which took its lumps in absentia earlier this month -- "Better Know a District" is fast becoming a rite of passage for House Members.
"The Colbert Report" -- which premiered last October on Comedy Central as a spinoff of "The Daily Show," Colbert's former roost -- created the Congressional segment out of necessity, Colbert says.
Members, he quips, "are the only people who seemed to have the courage to talk to us. There's such a high retention rate now, they have nothing to lose. ... I'd have to film them clubbing a baby seal for them not to be re-elected."
In the interviews, Colbert says his puffed-up talk show host persona seeks to channel a "well-intentioned, poorly informed, high-status idiot."
For the most part, the Members (who are told to play the straight man) don't seem to mind Colbert's non sequiturs, outrageous claims and preening for the camera.
