If there was anything the folks at The New York Times could take heart in after releasing their sagging first quarter results, it was that they were not the only protagonist in the woeful story of declining revenues. Ad revenue for Gannett fell by 1.9 percent in the first quarter, and at tempest-tossed Tribune Co., those revenues are off by a dizzying 6 percent. As an article in today's Washington Post clarifies, the industry itself is suffering as the hands of a host of maladies: the subprime fiasco, trouble in Detroit, and an increased tendency among retailers to use online and direct-mail advertising.
