Inside The "Star Wars" Supermarket

On Thursday, around midnight, the L.A. Convention Center was quiet, but not empty. A young woman in a long brown Obi-Wan Kenobi cloak walked stridently down the hall. A teenager, in cut off jeans and a black T-shirt with a stuffed Yoda backpack dangling from her shoulders, flirted with some boys.
The first day of the "Star Wars" Celebration IV fan convention was over, but the official store was open for 24 hours and people were still ready to shop. In the sci-fi world "fan" and "collector" are just about synonymous and the convention offers plenty of credit card damaging opportunities.
At the "Star Wars" Celebration III, held in Indianapolis in 2005, people waited in line eight to nine hours just to get into the store.
