India Elects First Woman President
Pratibha Patil has been elected India's new president, becoming the first woman to hold the office in the nation's six decades of independence, state-run media said Saturday.
The 72-year-old lawyer cruised to a comfortable victory over incumbent 84-year-old Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the race for the largely ceremonial post, Doordarshan television network reported.
