We Were Half-Right! John Arthur and John Montorio New Managing Editors At The LAT
Last month, we printed a scurrilous rumor/unconfirmed but highly trustworthy-ish intel that the new Los Angeles Times managing editor was assistant managing editor/Page One editor John Arthur. We were half-right: both Arthur and John Montorio will replace former ME Doug Frantz, Arthur as managing editor/news and Montorio as managing editor/features. Both of them will join the remaining ME Leo Wollinsky.
So now the LAT has three managing editors, up from the two that former EIC Dean Baquet appointed when he came on board. (Graphic made relevant! Though they will probably have fewer misunderstandings about sex.) Baquet's original two were Frantz and Wolinsky, who is currently holding down the fort and who, according to current LAT editor Jim O'Shea, "will retain his current title while we embark on a study of the department's organization to assess our needs for the future." Sounds like a big job — they might want to appoint a managing editor for that.
Anyhow, most importantly, we weren't wrong, despite Jim O'Shea saying "Rachel, You are wrong." Which is a relief, because we hate losing a battle of wits with Jim O'Shea.
