Richie/Sawyer Sitdown Set to be the Frost/Nixon of the Twenty-First Century
The headline on our Media page takes something of a firm position on the upcoming three-part Good Morning America interview between Nicole Richie and Diane Sawyer: "GMA Stoops To Airing Three-Segment Richie Interview." Clearly, they mean to prime us for another exercise in fluff journalism, the sort of thing Mika Brzezinski and now, Jack Cafferty, are, in their own small ways, taking a stand against. What will the interview cover? Over at Us Weekly, they say, "Some topics that we hope Sawyer will cover? Richie's August 16 court date for her December 2006 DUI arrest...And of course, that growing baby bump of hers..."
So: thus endeth the Summer Of Janice Min Grandstanding on Slippery Soapboxes.
Still, is there not at least a slim chance that a wide-ranging, informed discussion could happen between Richie and Sawyer? Based upon what we've heard about their interview agenda, you might be surprised:
Segment One: Richie will lead a detailed discussion on the historical effects that neoliberal globalization has had on Pacific Rim financial markets, with a special emphasis on how rampant currency speculation and the concomitant outflow of capital only served to exacerbate downturn trends in the region.
Segment Two: Sawyer and Richie will discuss what needs to be done to effect a global solution to the Palestinian crisis. Richie plans on framing the discussion by questioning whether the United States can depend on European partnership in this effort, given the history of ancient conflict between the emerging continental Catholic rulers and the alliance between the Moors and Sephardic Jews on the Iberian peninsula that flourished through the 12th century A.D.
Segment Three: Strappy sandals. (And if time remains, maybe something about Darfur .)
