No, it can't. A "drugfree world," which the United Nations describes as a realistic goal, is no more attainable than an "alcoholfree world"--and no one has talked about that with a straight face since the repeal of Prohibition in the United States in 1933. Yet futile rhetoric about winning a "war on drugs" persists, despite mountains of evidence documenting its moral and ideological bankruptcy. When the U.N. General Assembly Special Session on drugs convened in 1998, it committed to "eliminating or significantly reducing the illicit cultivation of the coca bush, the cannabis plant and the opium poppy by the year 2008" and to "achieving significant and measurable results in the field of demand reduction." But today, global production and consumption of those drugs are roughly the same as they were a decade ago; meanwhile, many producers have become more efficient, and cocaine and heroin have become purer and cheaper.

It's always dangerous when rhetoric drives policy--and especially so when "war on drugs" rhetoric leads the public to accept collateral casualties that would never be permissible in civilian law enforcement, much less public health.

Make it all legal, tax it = balanced budget. Crime down 70% to smart a thing for government to do.

Only if politicians did smart things this would happen.

The Christian Right Extremists have yet to find a Biblical passage against the use of marijuana, but they say it is a sin. Go figure!

And, as long as they are in control of America, the politicians will never legalize drugs and tax them and save on drug enforcement and make more people happy.

Legalization will never happen. There is too much money in for the ATF boys - what, with confiscation of money, yachts, homes, etc., business is too good to unemploy these people.
Relax and enjoy it.

Think of how many cops, lawyers, judges, prison personnel, parole officers, drug counselors, snitches, gun dealers, smugglers, gang members, PSA prodcuers, et al , would be out of work if we legalized drugs.

It's a cash cow up and down the line.

It would be sensible to legalize, but I won't hold my breath.

BTW I'm not a user but it doesn't bother me if others are.

Drugs can only effect someone who takes them. The War On Some Drugs effects everyone in a negative way.
It is amazing that here in Philadelphia where the laws that make drugs illegal have created a situation of violence and murder, no one has recognized this.
People and many other animals love to alter consciousness and will continue to do so.
Why create danger by allowing a black market and the violence and corruption that follow/

REPEAL PROHIBITION NOW FOR A BETTER WORLD!

Prohibition never works. You think the US would have learned that with alcohol.

Yes we must keep repeating the fact that prohibition never works and never has.

Drugs go back thousands of years, humanity has never been without the very things some are still trying to deny all. The drug war is a farce.

Everyone who wants to use drugs can get them right now.

Why does the government think more people will use them if they are legalized?

Pursuit of happiness.

MJ should be legal under the pursuit of happiness clause.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition:

Cops say legalize drugs-ask them why.

Great site, and you can join in their efforts!

2.2 million incarcerated.
1.9 million more incarcerated each year.
69 billion dollars each year cost to taxpayer.
Drugs are cheaper, more potent, and far easier to get than 35 years ago. Drug barons and terrorists grow richer than ever before.

the war on drugs is the primary way the clandestine netherworld of state intelligence and counter-intelligence finances itself.

it's not supposed to be "won."

Stop the kidding around about the weed I need. Since 1956 I have steadfastly had my daily dose of GANJA.

Now you are telling me that it is illegal?

What must I do? What can I say?

Oh well, at 67-years of age I think I will learn to just say no.

I find this strange that this is being talked about while bUshco is in the oval. Taxation comes to mind but the real issue is that legalizing Pot etc... would just keep the populous placated so that a dictatorship could be installed. The motives are hiding behind the explanation, the end result is not going to be apparent until it's too late. The war on terrorism, will become the war on the People - and the Quiet War will have been won - we will have lost everything for the benefit of a few. Not that I'm against legalization, I'm simply doubtful of the motives considering the present situation.

Yup, and let's legalize pedophilia, murder and rape, too. After all, we've already legalized treason.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:57 PM on 08/20/2007

Yes, because all those things are equal. Drug use is about personal choice. Being raped, molested or murdered is never a personal choice.

And don't even dare try to bring drunk driving into this, because it's perfectly legal to drink, the alcohol lobby is quite powerful in this country. Prohibition worked didn't it?

Until we stop electing republiscums we will have WAR and DEATH. It's all part of the republiscum party platform. They are not happy until WAR comes so they can make more money. They are a blight on America.

Legalize drugs?

Depends on the drug.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:44 PM on 08/20/2007

Yeah... ya got that correct...

We have to keep some drugs illegal for drug gangs to make a profit on. Good Thinking!
