No, it can't. A "drugfree world," which the United Nations describes as a realistic goal, is no more attainable than an "alcoholfree world"--and no one has talked about that with a straight face since the repeal of Prohibition in the United States in 1933. Yet futile rhetoric about winning a "war on drugs" persists, despite mountains of evidence documenting its moral and ideological bankruptcy. When the U.N. General Assembly Special Session on drugs convened in 1998, it committed to "eliminating or significantly reducing the illicit cultivation of the coca bush, the cannabis plant and the opium poppy by the year 2008" and to "achieving significant and measurable results in the field of demand reduction." But today, global production and consumption of those drugs are roughly the same as they were a decade ago; meanwhile, many producers have become more efficient, and cocaine and heroin have become purer and cheaper.

It's always dangerous when rhetoric drives policy--and especially so when "war on drugs" rhetoric leads the public to accept collateral casualties that would never be permissible in civilian law enforcement, much less public health.

Sadly, my Neighbor’s Son OD’d on Marijuana

He was just a kid. 23 years old, and a senior in high school. He was always a favorite in our family, and everyone loved him. He was a football player, an active member in our church and community, and always dunked his cookies into a cool glass of milk when he came over.

Well, one evening, during his fifth senior year, he was going to a religious/political victory party. Apparently some liberal parents next door had gone out of town (Las Vegas to consume alcohol, various drugs, gambling, unprotected sex orgies and to watch R rated movies on cable). They left their child unattended (why am I not surprised by the irresponsible parents) so he decided to throw a party. Well, when my next door neighbor’s son along with the other members walked past, the other kids were drinking, and smoking, and behaving in a non-conformist way.

Well, the marijuana cigarette smoke wafted out of the house and across the sidewalk. Almost immediately they went into convulsions and dropped like flies onto the hard, cold, “Lib” sidewalk. They were not found until the crack of dawn the next morning.

Continued:

Although most were partially eaten by evil “Lib” rats, the autopsies revealed they all died immediately from a sudden Bush (Bystander’s Uncontrollable Seizures and Hacking) Attack. The autopsies also showed their lung’s alveoli had burst causing them to drown on their own blood. This also explained the bleeding from the mouth and nose. Only one person still alive (my next door neighbor’s beautiful Neoconservative son) with his right foot gnawed off, and gurgling blood gave this description:

“At first we thought someone was burning some kind of unusual Fundamentalist insects. Then everyone’s eyes and noses started to burn and then bleed (cough). It was like some kinda biological welfare weapon and we were being attacked simply because we are tolerant, good religious people that only pray for everyone else to think and behave like we do (gurgle). Please don’t let this happen in vain (spat, spat, gurgle) and vote in ’08 for the good, religious Fundamentalist Neoconservatives (Gurgle, bubble, pop). And then he passed away.

Kids, don’t end up like my next door neighbor’s son. Just say "no" to toxic second hand marijuana fumes. Nixon declared a “War on Drugs” and I think we are about to turn the corner to victory.

I've often wondered why in an economy of supply and demand, we have waged war on the supply but done very little on the demand.

I've seen more damage done by video games and fast food in schools than pot has ever done. That's sad. :(

Although not much has been mentioned about this, Gov. Bill Richardson, to his everlasting credit, is paving the way for New Mexico to produce and distribute medical marijuana to the thousands of suffering patients there. The only snag is, the Feds want to go in and bust the ill people, and drag elderly cancer victims off to jail, for using the medicine their doctors can legally prescribe.

Stop wasting money on fighting domestic pot growers!Spend that money on fighting meth, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and perscription pain killers. Only block the illegal importing of pot. Stop drug companies that push addictive drugs like oxycontin and xanax.

Close corner stores that only sell booze, sugar, and salt. Stop the sale of wine coolers and malt beverages that contain more than 5% alcohol. Stop television beer advertising before 10pm. Stop all advertising of all addictive products that poison our nation. Stop the advertising of Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup products during childrens programing.

Tax the medical pot stores, but let citizens grow and smoke their own pot responsibly in their own homes(personal use only, no sales).

Support Natural beer, ale, and wines made to taste good, and not just intoxicate you beyond reason.

Support the legal and responsible use of American grown organic marijuana as an altervative to the white powders and blue pills that destroy our society.

Everyone needs to understand and not accept the hype: The War on Drugs was never meant to be won. It is one of those "let's keep the population under control by being in war" thingies that government love to use and that George Orwell satirized in 1984. The War on Drugs got going when the old Soviet bugaboo was being exposed as a complete fraud. Maybe they will shut down the War on Drugs now that they have the War on Terror to terrorize us about...

LEGALIIIIZE IT....doesn't that have a nice ring to it.....LEGALIIIIIIZE IT..

{exhale}......Ok, the fact is if drugs are legalized many sections of the economy will crumble, like urban clothing lines, some automobile showrooms, fast food restaurants, high end electronic stores, music sales, jewelry stores and real estate. When these sectors suffer decline in sales then other incidentals like taxes, layoffs and wages are affected as a consequent.
So if we really are serious about a war on drugs we have to put in place resources to combat the fallout.

Anyway "GANJA" on the other hand is the only true and LEGAL drug that was found on the grave of King Solomon...so LEGALIIIIIIZE IT.....

I'm sure there is some logic thread you are following in that argument, but I'm not seeing it at all.

The War On Drugs could be WON,if a new and larger attack is made on it.This attack of course would be patterned on the fiendishly clever and well thought out Bush/Pentagon military stratedgy known as the "Iraq Surge"!

Yeah... That's the ticket...

We, need a "Surge on the War on Drugs", are ya getting this Bu$h!?!

Stay the course. :)

Drug gangs need to make outragous sums of money.

Yeah that will work, wake up you fool, they can't even keep people out... The reality is they grow it all over this country, EVERYWHERE!

Sustainability scares the crap out of people, keep cutting down trees and popping your pills.

The War on Drugs is a joke. You most certainly don't need to throw people in jail as a form of "tough love". Either abolish all drugs or legalize them all, end of story.

And prostitution should be next. Why it's okay to pay two people to have sex and distribute it but make it illegal when only one person is being paid is beyond me.

Personal choice is just that, personal and a choice.

Well, actually you could do something about drugs, but it would probably require really securing the US/Mexico border, a move that this administration has really dragged their feet about, and since the drug biz is a multi-billion dollar industry for Mexico, chances are they aren't going to be doing much of anything to disrupt their revenue either.

The drugs DO come to El Norte across the border, but who will stop it? Who, indeed...

They also come south across the border, and more frequently since 9/11 they are from right here at home (mostly talking cannabis, but look at the booming bathtub meth industry.) There was just a story about increased busts in national parks about a week ago.

There are still a lot more drugs coming from other places than the US/Mexico border, which is really a small border in the scheme of things.

War on drugs, what a waste of time and money.
Legalize them and tax them and we could pay off the deficit.
Anyone can get anything they want anytime they please, Wake up!

how about education on the use of drugs? I've never taken illigal drugs and have no intention to, but teaching users the proper way to use them would make for a better consciencious citizen.

Yes, good idea because there will always be users, always.

Tax it all.

Use the hemp for cellulosic ethanol.

use the seeds for oil and the fiber for clothes.

Tax the stuff with THC. You have just created two - three additional markets and products. All taxable, upon sale.

In the land of the free and the home of the brave it's a federal crime to possess pot. What a lot of bullshit.

The war on drugs has been brought to you by the tobacco, alcohol and pharmceutical industries. These are the groups that sponsor the so called 'partnership for a drug free america'. I guess as long as you're buying their drugs and not growing your own it's OK with them.

Yep, good post!!!

Yeah drug free, but you can drink yourself to death. How many times do we hear of people drinking themselves to death? NEVER will you ever hear of anyone smoking enough pot to kill because there isn't a lethal dose smoking the stuff.
Yeah, drug free. If you drink 50 or 60 shots of espresso it could kill you.
Yeah drug free. How many people die around the world from cigarettes every year??

The politicians only worry about their next election and will never end the drug war, screw the plutocrats!!!!
