The format war over next-generation DVDs appeared to have a clear winner, but the picture just got fuzzier.

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. said Monday that they would offer movies exclusively in the HD DVD format rather than in that of the better-selling Blu-ray -- a surprise move that complicates the technology battle that Blu-ray had been clearly winning.

"I am very late to this party because I was skeptical about high definition," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive of DreamWorks Animation, "but what is happening in the marketplace is a game changer."

these companies are crazy. sony, etal think people want to buy MACHINERY when they really want music or movies. next thing, i won't be able to buy 8-track cassettes; they'll take them off the market. oh well, time for something new; hope i haven't maxed out the family's credit card. maybe this is the time to STOP BUYING. the dreck cycle exists only to feed corporate greed.

I'm one of the dumb asses that bought a PS3. The games and BRay look great, but, not enough game titles. Whats Block Buster going to do, not offer DreamWorks or Paramount movies?

This is the most asinine thing I've ever seen Sony, not learning a lesson from years of watching Beta die, decides to create a separate format rather than collaborate on a single format.

My guess is that nobody is in a rush to buy either player if they know that half the movies they may want to watch won't be availabe for the unit they buy.
