Mitt Romney has once again changed his position on whether states should be allowed to retain abortion rights.

Two weeks after indicating to ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America" that his abortion position goes beyond reversing Roe vs. Wade and includes support for a human life amendment to the Constitution as well as federal legislation that would bring the unborn under the protections of the 14th Amendment, Romney said Tuesday that he supports letting states make their own choices about abortion -- a position that would be impossible if his "GMA" abortion position were implemented.

Romney & Giuliani's troubles on the abortion just go to show how unsustainable the ProLife stance is in America--with the majority against them, and the realities of economic difficulties of the average American family--in contrast to the high-blown 'moral' theorizing that pleases the Religious Right base of the GOP. But they still try to play the game.

He hasn't switched positions. He has made tis same point months ago. If Roe v Wade is overturned, (which would be the next logical step for the pro life side) than abortion goes back to each individual state to decide. Mitt is still for a Life amendment but once it reverts to the states all the president can do is support a life amendment. He can't start the process toward an amendment, that is up to the legislative branch. Read your constitution Libs. Romney is pro Life and will continue to be so. He is just expressing (a little sloppily) the political realities of the issue.

I love this.

I love every time one of these idiots go on and on and on until they themselves are so friggin' confused and mesmerized by the trail of contradictory horse shit that's plopped out of their flaps, they can't tell you what they mean or think or know.

It is becoming painfully obvious that to be Republican is to be,well, retarded.

This reminds me of the YouTube video "Kissing
Hanks Ass". This is not a change of
position this is merely a clarification of
his previous position. With Romney's background
there is no such thing as a change of position.
There is a smile, a statement, another smile,
a restatement of the question, momentum, reaction,
push the limits of credibility, start again.

The "Reich-Ving" blogwhores are NOT having a good day today...aside from spewing racism, anti-semitisim, and mysoginy, they've kept expressly away from clearly half, today's news. My bet is that as soon as there's news they can spin, they'll be bac as if nothing had happened, earning their measly Scaife change.

Boy, the Repubs have offered us a SAD bunch of candidates. Several working BOTH sides of the street on every issue--one who can't decide to run--one who can't run his own campaign--one using a national tragedy to prop up his own character flaws--and a few running on one issue only. This is what happens when you're interviewing for the position of 'more of the same' and front man for a 3rd Bush term.

Romney, as a Mormon neocon Ken doll, wants women to live as second-class citizens without access to reproductive health care.

He wishes all women, everywhere, could wear his secret Mormon Magic underpants that protect the wearer from Satan. That is the birth control method he approves of.

Repubs always use "states rights" as a smokescreen for misogyny and racism. It is one of their insider codewords, like "school vouchers".

"Control" is the key word: sex control (as in who decides who can have sex; see also: lifestyle) birth control (controlling your access to sex education and birth control devices) information and mind control (over-emphasis of religious dogma vs science) lifestyle control (only church-sanctioned couples need apply) spin control (hiding their own sins while the media outs others doing the same sins)

Zizyphus, I don't have a problem with a candidate who actually believes in states' rights--who applies it consistently across the board, but I am so sick of these idiots like Romney and Bush who apply it only when it's convenient. How can you be for "states' rights" and simultaneously support consitutional amendments banning gay marriage and abortion?

Also, how can you be for states' rights and simultaneously support sending federal agents into California to bust everyone for medical marijuana. Why don't journalists ask these assholes questions like these?

And they're using the hell out of it this cycle. They have no hope of pandering to any minority this time, which is why you're seeing them slather after every white supremacist they can find.

The guy is a mental midget. I couldn't figure out how this guy made a dime. Then I remembered that he is a member of the Lucky Sperm Club, having had the good sense to have his successful father born ahead of him.

There's always such an issue on changing your opinon in the Presidential race. I personlly (I'm not a Romeny guy) would find it refreshing if a candidate would change their mind with reason and explain it rationally. I think being quick to point these kinds of fingers tend to discourage that. Meaning to say I don't know why this is the headline story. I mean abortion!? Is that really the biggest issue now? I would like to know why no debates or candidates are bringing up the issue of the government spying on amercians? Why isn't this issue involved in the debate?

I agree with you. I'm uncomfortable with people who refuse to change their position no matter what, but in Romney's case, I think his stand on the abortion issue is politically driven. He had to adopt a more moderate position to win the Massachusetts governorship, but now he has to appeal to the Republican base, and unfortunately, for a lot of them, abortion is the only issue.
