GOP Senator Warner: Start Iraq Withdrawal By Christmas

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:44 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:10 PM ET

CNN:

One of the Senate's top Republicans has called on President Bush to start bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq by Christmas, telling reporters Thursday that a pullout was needed to spur Iraqi leaders to action.

Sen. John Warner, the influential former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he has recommended that Bush announce the beginning of a U.S. withdrawal in mid-September, after a report from the top U.S. officials in Iraq.

buy a bumper sticker Mr. Warner.. and stop being a troop hater..

you liberal politicians drive me nuts with your hatred for our troops.. so Mr. Warner stop attacking our troops and keep them in Iraq where as we all know these troops want to be for their third or fourth tour.. so you troop hating Warner bum.. stop attacking George W. Bush who as we all know was a great war hero during his dangerous tours in Texas against those NVA and vietcong that swam here to insurgent us at home.. where were you Mr. Warner likely vacationing in Vietnam or Cambodia or in Korea enjoying a crisp winder day on some beautiful road like Chosin or some such enjoyable place..

buy a bumper sticker Mr. Warner and stop hating our troops..

"I'll be home for Christmas....." La La La.

That's a nice touch, John.

But it looks like the big piece on the Repiglican concert program this fall will be:

Haydn, "Farewell Symphony".

As y'all abandon Boy George, one by one.

Snuffing out the candles on your music stands as ye leave.

Poor George. He can't help it.

the problem is it undercuts dem frontrunners' positions effectively, which as far as i can see accept a longterm presence in iraq. it will be an effective distraction. now the question is do you support warner or not- not do you support withdrawl.

Senator Warner,
Every soldier and Iraqi that has died in this illegal and unnecessary war is blood on your hands.
That goes double for "le surge". They are dying because of your political cowardice.
How many more will die needlessly before Christmas?
Begin withdrawing American troops immediately. They should be competely out by Christmas
and replaced, if necessary, with UN peacekeepers.

Warner is one of the worst Republican enablers in the Senate. The FORMER Chairman is trying to avoid becoming a FORMER Senator by appearing to oppose the hugely unpopular war. Too little too late - he's not fooling anybody. It's not the Iraqi government he cares about, it's the Republican Party. EVERY REPUBLICAN MUST GO to end this war. Every stinking one. When the whole leg is gangrened taking a toe off won't help. For Warner to say this, the private Republican polls must be worse than we know.

so VFW Hil and nukes off the table barack missed the withdrawl train, it looks like. bushco will withdraw the hell out of the troops down to about 85,000 to stick out the election and the dems will be forced to sign on. they could have owned this thing as late as last spring- now even bush can "out-withdraw" all the frontrunners. i even think it undercuts the radical argument not to fund- just to be politically realistic...

Warner has "spoken out and cleared his own conscience". Oh ya...he is up for re-election and perhaps even his state is tired of useless wars. Warner is so late with this conscience that we know it is not sincerely contrite. Bush has ignored him and now what. This is just plain disgusting.

Big fucking deal. 5,000 home by Christmas, BUT the "decider" gets to decide when the rest come home, so in reality nothing really changes.

This is just more smoke and mirrors from the RepubliCON minority to prep themselves for the '08 elections.

I hope the good people of Virginia are not fooled by Warner's proposal. Hopefully, in '08 they will retire this useless sack of monkey shit.

i am honestly asking- not rhetorically asking... what dems want any withdrawl by christmas? i could have easily missed that... but i haven't even heard dennis specify a date that early- but likely i just missed it... fill me in...

It is clear that Warner (who's retiring from the Senate, what courage) is the Bush advance man to take the wind out of the sails of Dems who want major withdrawals, rather than the "small, symbolic" withdrawals that Warner is offering to cover Bush and his Republican buddies who are running for reelection/president in '08.

Now, that's a 'good' analysis. It actually maybe the intent.

In other words, you think Warner is also a crook, a supporter of the fascist Bush-Cheney cabal that is hell bent on destroying our country and getting our soldiers killed for oil companies. Sad!

Plenty of Muslims can still be slaughtered. 5,000 more or less would be imperceptable.

As long as those dirty Muslims suffer and bleed I'm good.

This is the quagmire I always wanted.

I get off on cool casual analyisis of others suffering and torture and death. It makes me feel smug and superior. I can talk tough without ever leaving the comfort of my armchair.

As Pat Boone (another great American) said "America. Even when we're wrong we're right"

Sen Weiner's call for say 5,000 troops to come home by Christmas is a 'good' thing, but his intended result of pushing the Iraqi's to reconciliation by 'sending a message' is misguided. Sectarian groups waiting for a chance to resurge will also see this as a result of their efforts, and press an advantage. Thus, losing any ground gained.

Two sides to every coin, but I'm willing to bring home some well deserving troops and give it a try. They can always be sent back in, right?

One observation stated today is Warner has

spoken out to provide some "cover" for the

Republicans running for office in 2008.

How do you "cover" the 3, 700 + dead American soldiers?
