I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Washington--From the K Street lobbyist corridor to the major gay and lesbian organizations to the city's kingpin consultants and fundraisers to the big feminist groups, Hillary Clinton has acquired a near-lock on the Democratic establishment in the nation's capital.

The level of support here for the junior New York Senator approaches what an incumbent president seeking re-election might expect.

The people and organizations run the gamut: Togo West, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs and CEO of The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the nation's premier black think tank; Elizabeth Bagley, former US Ambassador to Portugal whose Georgetown home has been the gathering place for countless fundraisers; Elizabeth Birch, former head of the Human Rights Campaign, and her former partner, MSNBC and CNBC commentator Hilary Rosen and, of course, former DNC chair and money-man extraordinaire Terry McAuliffe.

Those names only touch the surface of Clinton's support among the Democratic establishment.

Take Matthew Bernstein, a prominent Hillary-backer. He is a classic Washington success story. Once a lowly legislative assistant to former Senator Howard Metzenbaum, he is now a lobbyist whose clients paid his law firm $1.98 million during just the first half of 2006, according to reports filed with the Senate. Among those clients is the Estate Tax Coalition seeking permanent elimination of the burdensome levy placed on the nation's wealthiest citizens.

And then there is Vernon Jordan, one of this city's highest-profile wheeler-dealers, who is now a Clinton $100,000-plus bundler. And Vernon is not the only major bundler in the Jordan family. His wife, Ann Dibble Jordan is also a $100,000-plus bundler whose credentials as a player in Washington include past or present board memberships at Johnson & Johnson, Automatic Data Processing, Citigroup, and Catalyst; service as a trustee at The Brookings Institution, the University of Chicago, WETA (Washington's PBS affiliate), and the Phillips Collection; and chair of the Board of Directors at the National Symphony Orchestra.

Barack Obama has ten Washingtonians each committed to raising at least $50,000. Some are well known figures, including former Federal Communications Commission chairman William E. Kennard who is now with the Carlyle Group; and Gregory Craig, who defended President Clinton at his impeachment trial before the Senate. But adding up all the Washington fundraiser-bundlers listed on Public Citizen's White House For Sale web site, Clinton has 21, more than all seven of her Democratic opponents combined, who have 15.

Clinton's links to the Democratic establishment and influence centers of Washington D.C. extend deep into the institutional structure of the city. Clinton people are embedded in crucial positions.

The Center for American Progress, the most effective of the Democratic think tanks, is run by John Podesta, Bill Clinton's former chief of staff. The more established Brookings Institution is run, in turn, by Strobe Talbot, Deputy Secretary of State from 1994 to 2001 and a close personal friend of the Clintons.

Kelly Craighead, who had been an aide to Senator Clinton, is now Managing Director of the Democracy Alliance, a partnership of wealthy Democrats, each of whom is committed to investing substantial sums in liberal organizations selected by the Alliance staff.

One of the ventures financed by the Democracy Alliance is the Data Warehouse, a company putting together lists of both voters and non-voters, and then combining those lists with data on individual consumer buying patterns, religious activity, hobbies, union membership, and a host of other commercially available information. The goal of the Data Warehouse project is to allow Democrats to catch up with - and if possible surpass -- Republicans in the new technologies of micro-targeting and data mining to ensure that as many friendly voters as possible turn out. The Data Warehouse is run by Clinton loyalist and top strategist Harold Ickes.

I'm with the majority of Democrats in the country - I support Hillary Clinton all the way. She's got everything it takes to be the best President. She was an impressive First Lady; she's a hardworking kickass Senator and her campaign for President is second to none.
Now, if you want the GOP to win the general election, give them Barack Obama. They'll break him like a twig. Or give them John the Hypocrite Edwards and his potty-mouthed wife.
Hillary all the way. She's going to be our next President.

Well true believer, you and Randi Rhodes will be telling us again at election time we have to vote for Hillary and we aren't going to; so you better hope a lot of Republicans like Hillary better than the Republican. Hillary will never win with a democratic base Bill Clinton betrayed with NAFTA and permanent replacement workers for strikers.

Hilary is the same as Kerry, she was for the war before she was against it, then she was for taking a bombs off table before she was for them, she is so wishy washy it is hard to know just what she really is for. Cause what she is for today will not be what she is for tomorrow. She is a female and belongs home barefoot pregnant and in the kitchen where she can do no harm.Maybe then Bill wouldnt have zipper trouble.

Five pages of (mostly) self-proclaimed Dems/progressives, assuming the familiar circular firing squad formation.

Right now, Karl is probably bathing in warm Jell-O, giggling like a little girl and arousing himself.

It would be a firing squad _after_ the nomination.

Beforehand, it's politicking for our various favorites.

Meaningless as that may be.

If Hiliary is the democrat choice for President, I pray Ralph Nader jumps in the race and keeps her from winning. It was bad when he did it to Gore but will be good for the country if he does it to the Hi liar

News, folks, news...I have been critical of Obama, but having listened to him speak on Iraq and on mortgage crisis today, I have joined the Obama camp...he was THAT good...in the primary in NJ, I will be voting for him...what happens in the General, we'll see...I still like Hill, not a hater, but Obama has finally persuaded me with well thought out and on-target arguments.
Let's face it, we don't need to grin and bear it to choose a Dem this time...but with the Repigs, they are all out and out STINKERS! The stench is nauseating!

As I have posted elsewhere Rudy Guiliani WILL be the next POTUS.

Why? Simple because, the people that have spent the last 6 1/2 years putting this country on the course that it is, are not going to go quietly away in the night. They will do everything in their power to stay in power.

How??

Well first of all it would be to back a Republican candidate in Nov 08 that they could manipulate as well as have charisma to electrify their base. Rudy actually could do this much better than Dumbya.
What about Tricky Dick Jr. ? Is there any law that says he can't succeed himself?

Bullshit you say Hillary/obama/edwards......can beat him. Really?
Lets look at the last two elections. Not much different in voting totals, in fact Bush got a larger majority in 2004 then in 2000. If the Dems are going to win in Nov 2008 they will have to keep the votes they got in 2006.
Can they?? Don't bet on it.

Why?? Because the Repug leadership didn't really care whether they lost the control of Congress in 2006 but they will come out fighting to get those votes back to keep the WH.

Now onto 2008. What would the RNC strategy be? hmmmm?

Rah Rah convention nominating Rudy with little or no divisiveness.
Then Rambo Rudy goes out on the trail to scare the base into voting for him by using their most effective tool "Dems are weak on national security". Karl will have from now to then to do his dirty tricks.

RESULTS???

Rudy wins, the Repugs will easily get the Senate back and they won't give a shit what happens in the House.

So there I have said it. Am I a Repug troll? NO just a lifelong Dem who is having the balls to tell it the way it is going to come down.

As long as we allow Diebold voting machines to exist, the republicans can sweep it all.

There should be more of a push to ban those things.

When Bill and Hillary get through with Rudy, Nixon will look like Jesus Christ. Why? Because he is a mean, angry, dishonest, bald, three timing jerk that few people like when they get to know him -- including his own family.

What have you been taking lately?

To those who say they won't vote for Clinton no matter what. Who gives a fat rat's ass? She'll have more than enough votes to win the nomination and yes, the Presidency.
Not my first choice but certainly better than any Ralph Nader vote. A vote for Nader is akin to working 20 years at a job you hate just to prove a point.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:18 AM on 08/24/2007

If Ralph Nader were president in 2000, 9/11 would have never happened. Therefore, there would have been no need for an invasion and occupation of Afghanistan or Iraq. More than a million people would still be alive, and tens of millions would not be maimed for life or be homeless refugees.

If Ralph Nader were president in 2004, the troops would have already been back two years ago. There would be UN troops bringing stability to those areas, and the casualties on both sides would at least be fewer than they are now.

You see Nader had a plan, unlike the democrats.

Looks like it's time for a change. If Hillary can put together this much support just because she's Bill's wife, what kind of support will she have once she's elected?

I know this, even if she's nominated by the Democrats, I'm still voting for Obama. I'll write his name in. And you can bitch me out when she loses to Giulianni or the toothpaste ad, but I can hold my head up and say I voted my conscience.

If Hillary can't put together a coherent platform in all this time, you can be damn sure she won't anytime.

But she'll have the support of the Washington insiders to thank for that.

Not me.

The Clintons came to LIEberman's rescue in his race against a REAL democrat Ned Lamont in CT. Therefore, the Clintons betrayed the democratic party. THAT is reason alone NOT to vote for ANY Clinton.

Add to that, she's a complete WAR hawk! I thought you wanted your sons and daughters to live. I thought you wanted them to eventually come home.

Well they will NOT with a Clinton Administration.

The Clinton's support for Joe Lieberman is enough of a reason not to support her now. I don't need another triangulating Clinton as President.

It would be nice to have a Democrat as President who didn't need a focus group, pollster or media consultant to tell him/her what he thinks.

The exact reason I will not vote for her, she is a corporate whore, just like her husband. I noticed the prosperity banner behind her in the photo. Prosperity for who Senator Clinton. Are you going to give a damn about average Americans or lie to us like your husband did when his campaign slogan was "Putting People First" ?

Just another reason to look elsewhere for a nominee. We want change, not an insider that cares more about corporate and big money interests than serving the country. If Hillary were elected, day one, she would start campaigning for re-election. Not what we need.

Of course the corrupt establishment of washington is for Hillary. She is one of them and more corrupt than most.
the establishment fears candidates like obama and Edwards who will upset the power base, bring in sunlight, transparency, and have new and fresh ideas.
But, Washington establishment hear this:
You do not vote. You are not as strong as the people out in the real world.
You and your corrupt candidate will be defeated. The people will show who has the real power and we will not vote for Evita Clinton. We do not want her.
