If President Bush is serious about getting tough on U.S. employers who hire illegal aliens, he can start with his own administration, which employs thousands of unauthorized workers, says the top Republican on the House immigration subcommittee.

A 2006 audit showed federal, state and local governments are among the biggest employers of the half-million persons in the U.S. illegally using "non-work" Social Security numbers -- numbers issued legally, but with specific instructions that the holders are not authorized to work in the U.S.

One of the dumbest things I've heard this year was when Karl Rove said, "I don't want my 17-year-old son to have to pick tomatoes or make beds in Las Vegas."

What is wrong with doing physical work, especially as a young person? Statements like Rove's are insulting to anyone who's had to trade physical labor to afford simple items like groceries and clothing. Some of us have had to labor to physical exertion to provide more for our children, a step up in life, but we wouldn't expect them to be immune from such lessons themselves. Doing such work is not noble nor is cause for pity. However, such labor deserves the dignity not to be demeaned as "below" certain members or our society.

And so for illegal immigrant labor, those that exploit this resource deserve every bit of contempt from US citizens. Given all of the problems that our nation faces, it says volumes about what we have left that so many want to be here. If our laws have any meaning, then the border must be enforced and those found to be here illegally must be deported. Like the saying goes, there's no such thing as "a little bit pregnant." Once a person has decided to enter the US from Mexico without a visa or passport, they are breaking the law.

If we have so debased the value of physical labor, then truly our society doesn't deserve any of the fruits of such labor.

You are right. Physical work teaches the value of money, discipline, an appreciation for different labor skills.

Rove is not expected to have such appreciation, he doesn't see himself as an ordinary American. Most see him as a corrupt pathological liar.

Zephyrus: Also, why does not the rich, Corporate elite perceive that the reason they are corporate AND rich and elite is secondary to the last century of mass consumption of their products and services? How can they continue to prosper if they destroy the worker class's ability to afford their products/services? Do they really believe that masses of poverty stricken people both amnestied illegal immigrants and legal citizens, living from "hand to mouth," one-paycheck-to-the-next will run out and buy expensive electronic products, designer drugs and financial services? All "undocumented workers here illegally need to rally in the streets, not for undeserved entitlements paid for by taxpaying U.S. workers, but against employers who exploit them and pit them against their U.S. peers. Organize them first, then legalize those not felons, then help Mexico to create better conditions for those still there.

There is one truism that doesn't belong on your sarcastic list. The Iraq War. That he clearly caused. There are other truisms but there is no point in repeating what has already been documented.

A moot point but the bridge was on I35 not I95.

The fact that this is a surprise to anyone means they need to be slapped with a sturgeon upside the head.

ka-fwap!

Bush is just another corporate shill anyway- why shouldn't he do exactly what he's allowing companies all over the border regions (and everywhere else in America) to do- hire cheap labor to benefit the bottom line.

This is a bullshit story.

1. The source: Washington Times, a Sun Myung Moon rag;

2. The Congressman: Rep. Steve King, Republican, Iowa 5th US District, an earth moving contractor.

This is the old, old Republican trick of running against Washington, D.C.

Do you think the Repugs give a shit if they make Dubya look bad?

Hell no. He's done January 19, 2009. So run against Washington, D.C. That's what the GOP does. That's all they know. And it works! So why should they stop now.

Let freedom ring, you xenophobic liberals! With justice, liberty, and salsa con queso for all...

Christ, to listen to you liberals, one would think an enormous, murderous Mexican horde is storming the southern border of the United States intent on ravaging the countryside.

There's far bigger issues to worry about, like abortion, gay marriage, and the Purple Teletubbie. Embrace our neighbors from the south instead of saying -- why should I have to learn a new language?

Goddamned whining liberals.

That's the worst, the weakest example of trying to pick a fight I think I've ever seen on this site.

Your premise has to be plausible for it to have any impact, and the plain and simple fact of the matter is that your president and his ongoing war are a rock around the neck of Republicans who are too devoted to their party to bail depite the fact that he's taking them down with him.

Republican Motto: Party Before Country!!

Well since the south had to give up slavery, they decided cheap Mexican labor would be the next best thing! What ever would the Republicans do without their cheap labor? Farm their own land with AMERICAN workers, who would ask for higher wages! Hell no! They will fight to the death to protect their low paid immigrant workers and the Democrats condone it because they all want the Hispanic vote. I've got a suggestion how about we send our entire government to Mexico, then maybe the illegals will follow them and they can all buy land and employee them to work it. There problem solved! Farewell

How about we send them to California to work in the fields and get sprayed with poisoned pesticide as they work because the landowners don't want to waste precious time clearing the fields before they spray?

What will racists do when US dictators impose the planned North American Union? The racists will no longer be able to call Mexicans "illegal aliens" because both they and Mexicans will be part of the NAU.

What happens if the economy crashes as many analysts predict? Those of us who have been more fortunate up until now will be asking Mexicans for tips on how to survive on a greatly reduced income.

Try to put it all in perspective. It should be obvious by now that we do not live in a democracy. If US rulers want a North American Union, they'll implement one, whether the people who live here like it or not. We've already watched them shipping our jobs overseas and reducing our access to health care.

Most of us are powerless subjects whose only hope is unity against a common oppressor. Those who continue to rant and rave against Mexicans--as if Mexicans were the problem!--only help the dictatorship.

It's amazing how much dis-information there is out there. A little like when right wingers announce that raising minimum wage will kill a country's economy (as they claimed in the UK a few years ago).

I guess it depends where your priorities are, but I don't believe it is right for a company to be operating solely on the basis that it offers wages that force people to live in poverty. That applies to mimimum wage and illegal workers (or "guest workers" if that sounds more palatable to the right wingers).
