If President Bush is serious about getting tough on U.S. employers who hire illegal aliens, he can start with his own administration, which employs thousands of unauthorized workers, says the top Republican on the House immigration subcommittee.

A 2006 audit showed federal, state and local governments are among the biggest employers of the half-million persons in the U.S. illegally using "non-work" Social Security numbers -- numbers issued legally, but with specific instructions that the holders are not authorized to work in the U.S.

This is not real news. Real news will be that Bush has actually done something to comply with the laws of the USA rather than kowtow to Calderon and the multinational corporations.

Why should we deny unauthorized workers jobs?

We allowed an un-elected President to run the whole country.

as I recall when Bush was trying to sell his immigrztion package, he said he wanted to give illegal aliens a pathe to citizenship by use of military work...

But someone needs to tell him that vote got denied.

So he's doing all of these things illegally-especially after the immigration vote-which was by his own words. That seems pretty damning that he could never say he never knew or use the "I don't recall"-when his own words are proof of where the policy came from.

This is a perfect example of how so many Republicans have perfected the language of social conservatism and moral values, yet fail to emobdy it.

Poor/Middle Class Americans still clean their own houses, do their own landscaping, clean hotel rooms, work in restaurants and fast food places, paint houses, do contruction work, and work in places like airports.

However, there are people that don't care to do that type of work, and that don't care to employ libs who do. I have many Republican friends who'd rather employ an undocumented worker as opposed to a so-called documented liberal.

When I finish college, I intend to employ undocumented workers as a way of showing my patriotism. I know quite a few other Young Republicans who plan on doing the same....

I think getting the libs to build the fence would help teach them how to do an honest day's work. Then we could teach them how to cut lawns.

Too bad such a vital matter is commented on in such a mindlessly hostile fashion.

It obscures the real point, a very very serious one.

I have read nothing on Huffpost which is more serious than this. With the government/s hiring illegals, we have an illegal government.

the repug lobbyists like the chamber of commerce want the cheap labor to max businesses profits and keep wages low in the usa.

the demo's want the votes.

the military wants to keep its mercenary army afloat.

the Catholics want to fill their pews.

homeowners want cheap labor for yard and house work.

Bottom line American greed.

You are safe illegal’s keep coming you are welcome in a land of greed from a country losing its wealth at a rapid pace but to keep up the pretense of wealth we will take advantage of your cheap labor at the expense of our middle class that keeps voting for politicians that are hell bent on destroying the middle class.

Besides without our taking Mexico’s and South American’s poor how could those countries keep up their elitist’s status? This is a win win situation for everyone except the middle class but they would rather vote for politicians that cater to capitalist’s lobbyists then harbor the idea of voting for a new party that is designed to actually care for the people and not just corporate profits. But then that wealth does trickle down.

We have met the enemy and it is………?

Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but it seems to me that titles on HuffPost aim more at drama than accuracy. The actual article refers to "illegal workers" which is accurate, as the workers are LEGAL, DOCUMENTED immigrants whose visas don't allow them to WORK. Moreover, while Bush is "hit" in the title of the original article, neither the title nor the body of text suggest that Bush himself is the direct employer -- and in fact, the illegal workers are employed at all levels of government.

In the HuffPost version of the title, it's "Bush employs" and the workers become "undocumented" which implies that they are not legally in the country at all.

I'm as big a Bush-basher as anyone, but I think sites like HuffPost damage their credibility by twisting headlines in the direction they'd like the articles to read, or in an attempt to make something seem more dramatic than it is.

Meaning that there should be no effort to present things in a straightforward manner? To what end? Does HuffPo aspire to be the online version of Rush Limbaugh and completely manipulate the news and become strictly a propaganda outlet?

And people wonder why the blogosphere is ridiculed in so many quarters.

Fine. I'm not asking its bloggers to become "neutral" or "balanced" but this is a news story. When I see a headline that implies that a story says X and it really says Y, that suggests to me that the person who wrote that headline was more interested in pushing an agenda than in informing me as a reader.

No wonder Pres Bush is so interested in getting somesort of "immigration" deal. Illegals at all levels are stealing jobs from Americans who are perfectly qualified to perform them ~~ irregardless of job type or working conditions. All that is required is decent pay so that they and their families can live with a decent standard of living. Pres Bush is once again talking out of both sides of his mouth and apparently using the federal government as a pesonal hiring tool for illegal immigrants. And employers hiring them should be thrown in jail for an eternity.

Half a million illegal immigrants in government service. They're probably educated and white or at least not brown. So much for low paying work that U.S. people won't do.

This immigration thing is enormously complicated and awash in the most insane ideas. Round them all up-an estimated 20 million people? Really (I know, how about an immigration czar? That's the ticket!)

I heard some asshole on Fox the other night ponticating about how his grandparents had come to this country in the late 19th century and had done it "legally". This clown is presumably under the impression that the great flood of immigrants that came to the US up through the early part of the 20th century were documented. Huh?

Complex issues require intellectual discipline and vision to successfully address. Ok, now think about George W Bush. I assume you get my drift.

Perhaps the Bush administration could also investigate Republican donor and Swiftboat funder Bob Perry, owner of Houston-based Perry Homes, whose numerous upscale town home projects employ immigrant labor almost exclusively. Statistically, the probability of many of those laborers being illegal is very high.

Or is the Bush administration not interested in policing Republican fat cats who donate millions of dollars to the RNC?

I tried finding the source of data given in that link. What I got was a "circular link" - the source appears to be the same as the document itself.

I could be wrong, but this seems to be another case of shit pulled out of thin air - a typical Republican practice.
