The British unit was on patrol Thursday evening in Helmand province when it came under Taliban attack, the British Ministry of Defense said.

I know this is off-thread....but for what purpose does HUFFPO still list Al-JAZEERA as an information source?? What credibility does this anti-American "source" have that would make it necessary for Huffpo to use it??? That's like Hungary in 1965 using PRAVDA as a source of truth!!! Get rid of it!!

Although publicly British commanders insist the Americans are still a vital ally in the fight against insurgents, privately British soldiers expressed concern and anger at their "gung-ho" approach.

"I just can"t figure out how this has happened. How do you tell the families they were killed by supposed allies?" one British soldier asked.

"Whenever I hear we have American jets overhead I get f***ing worried," another serviceman said. "They just don"t seem to know what they are doing a lot of the time."

"They have a different approach to us, they fire first and think later," said another.

"Here we are fighting the Taleban and they (US warplanes) are dropping bombs on us," said a British soldier. "They are meant to have the best equipment, yet this still happens time and time again. You have to wonder what they are doing."

Earlier this month an unnamed senior British officer told The New York Times that differences in tactics were such that he had asked American Special Forces teams to pull out of the town of Sangin, in Helmand, because they were causing so many casualties and undermining support for reconstruction projects.

The US forces also planned to build a patrol base near a religious shrine and a graveyard " a proposal only abandoned after British troops intervened.

But when The Times visited Sangin last month, other soldiers were willing to describe the difficulties of working with their allies. "They just seem to have no idea how to fight a counterinsurgency, we have a history but they have no reference points" said one soldier.

"They have a different approach to us, if we get in an ambush we pull back and assess the situation," said another. "They try and shoot their way through it and kill as many people as possible."

First, let me say that this is a tragedy.
With all the technology that we hold, we should be better at this.

Now, the reality.
Blair would have blown this off.
Let's see what Brown will do.

This should be interesting.

Truth is bombing from the air is allways inaccurate - when you opt to use bombing you are accepting that much more collateral damage -

How high do these planes fly when they're called in to aid the Brits? Are they low enough to see the Brits? If so, were the Brits in British uniforn or dressed in mufti? Could they have been mistaken for Taliban? I guess these questions should be asked.

Its not just height. It is also about speed.

A jet fighter doesn't just cruise along at 30 MPH like some ultralight. And its not low enough to make out uniforms on the ground. In fact, the lower you are, the harder it is to concentrate on ground objects. Altitude gives the illusion that you are going slower... but you cant see something small like a human.

Next time on a commercial jet, lok out the window on climb-out and see how difficult is really is.

Perhaps at some time during the bomb run an ideal set of circumstances may occurr. But it is doubtful that a pilot, trying to deliver his load on target, is taking the time to see if someone is visible, and if so what uniform he wears.

No, he drops on the specified target and gets his ass home.

Since we killed those British soldiers, they must be al Qaeda.

This is the same phenomenon occuring in Iraq. Whoever we kill in Iraq - women, children or men, it doesn't matter, they all instantly and magically become al Qaeda - often posthumously.

Forpeace-Our troops should care that they're fighting for Sharia law,but many countries have Democracies, but I don't pay much attention to what they all vote for.

Pilots of the air reservist squadrons on duty have, according to oral repitition, seemingly a long history of "happy fingers". This has been known since the days of the Second World War. Too bad, they deserve better.

It was close air support and the British had called it in. It was not a case of "happy fingers", whatever that means.

Forpeace-I don't care what they voted for.My response was to someone claiming that we were fighting for freedom in Iraq and I pointed out that Saddam was no threat to our freedom and that most Iraqis don't want freedom. The point being that we are not fighting for freedom in Iraq.
