No country in history has emerged as a major industrial power without creating a legacy of environmental damage that can take decades and big dollops of public wealth to undo.

But just as the speed and scale of China's rise as an economic power have no clear parallel in history, so its pollution problem has shattered all precedents. Environmental degradation is now so severe, with such stark domestic and international repercussions, that pollution poses not only a major long-term burden on the Chinese public but also an acute political challenge to the ruling Communist Party. And it is not clear that China can rein in its own economic juggernaut.

Hey, but China is suppose to be THE country of the 21st century. I think NOT! By 2020, China will be in such disrepair that it will make our problems problems look like a folk dance. Environmental, Health and Social problems will prove to be so daunting that the country's economic growth will stall and social unrest will quickly follow.

The first paragraph of the article says Europe and America industrialized years ago and did pollute the environment that tooks years to recover. Now, China is starting to industrialize and some people hate it for the pollution that followed. They couldn't care less if the Chinese live or die in perpetual destitution and poverty without industrialization, just like the Africans.
That is pathetic !

I heard that the Chinese are going to build these huge windmills and blow the smog away from the Olympic Village to show the world how clean is their air.

This is the atmosphere athletes from all over the world are going into at the Olympics? The Olympics should be boycotted not only because of China's ineffectual handling of pollution but because of their part in the genocide in Darfur.

As I said in another post, I'd boycott Chinese goods and buy American products if I could but then I'd be naked, starving, and waving my American flag, made in China and calling my local government office, staffed in India.

When I was a kid back in the 50s, we used to drive up to the Grands' house in Los Angeles for Christmas, a time of Santa Ana winds and smog. Driving into the LA basin, the air would be brown. We kids would be running around until we had to stop. Our lungs would burn. Our eyes would water. We'd get short of breath. Over the years, emission controls have curtailed that to some degree, but the pictures of Beijing's pre-Olympic celebration brought it all back. You cannot see the buildings due to the vile haze hanging over the region.

People with lung problems are already being told to stay away. But, what about the athletes? They are going to be competing and breathing this horrid, toxic air!

Who the hell thought it was a good idea to hold the Olympics in one of the filthiest places on Earth?

The Baiji dolphins got it right. They protested by going extinct. I'm sure other species will follow, save the one that should.

Soylent Yellow...now with 50% more melamine!

I guess the one saving grace of the 2008 Olympics of Oppression will be that the whole world will see how badly the Chinese have fucked up the environment.

Well, at least it's comforting to know that, according to Bush's EPA, pollution actually does stop at the border. Scientists in the EPA have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that borders (those imaginary lines on a map) are able to contain the most extreme cases of pollution and that we have nothing to worry about as long as we maintain the border lines . . . er . . . uh, you know, those line thingys . . . borders. Look, what's that over there? Now, shut up and go consume; go buy a toy made in China and let your kid suck on it.

I have been writing about the Coal Seam Fires burning out of control in Red China..for Years since 2002 at least..!

They alone create as much CO2 as all the cars and lite Trucks in America including SUV's and has the so called environmentalists listened cared no it didn't fit their wrapped political and ego driven agenda and where does this get blown to by the Jet stream..

Right California..!

It's all over what they call the pollution ban in the upper hemispheres..

So there are other causes but these useless Coal Seam Fires must be put out and they can using foam, they are burning in other places as well almost every Continent...

Including one in Pennsylvania burning for 47 years now...!

COAL SEAM FIRES PUT THEM OUT..!!!

Too bad we didn't sign Kyoto when we had a chance back in 1999. The U.S. would have used less petroleum (causing the market rate for a barrel of oil to drop) and the Chinese (who weren't constricted by Kyoto) could have bought more oil and caused more pollution for the same price.

Damn! That Al Gore had it right.

When you factor in China and India to the Global Warming problem, it is easy to see that the human race is screwed. There is no way we can recover from that now. It's way too late.

You can not buy anything that was not made in China. Go to a "Western" clothing store that sells cowboy boots and jeans. It's all made in China or India.

It will take a major effort on the part of Americans to start buying American made goods. You can't find them anywhere. It's not just Wal-Mart selling things from China. Everybody is doing it.

If you have an immigrant population in your town, you can find quality clothes and boots 'made in Mexico'at the tiendas and mercados. They are more authentically'Southwestern' than anything else.

BeerHolder. You mean there are still things made in this country.?

I sense a quandary. Our President has been gutting environmental laws for years, allowing our cities and water supplies to be contaminated by industrial pollution ... and at the same time, our industries are all being shipped to nations without environmental protections in place ... which means that eventually OUR cities, rivers and streams should be cleaned up by the attrition of industrial waste and we would win the War on the Environment by a technical knockout. Of course, then we'd all drown because the ice caps had melted, but some people would complain if you hung 'em with new rope.

republicans, democrats and all others who continue to support this globalization, privatization and deregulation is 'the only way' political/corporate meme are responsible for all of it.
The U.S. economy will continue to suffer for anyone not in the top 10%...fundamental economic policy change that is necessary is not anywhere in sight except with 'marginal candidates' but won't happen when the bulk of congressional and senate will obstruct any positive change. Have fun America dying a slow and painful economic or pollution-caused death like the Chinese

The situation with China
is another indication of what
hypocrites run America.

Here are the evil "communist" Chinese
feed and clothing us.

Gee, Mr. Super Patriot American Businessman,
how this happen?

Are they now good commies because of Wal-Mart?

Are we no longer morally superior??

Breathtaking..............

Don't worry about China. In a couple more
generations, when the rich-poor gap simply
becomes obscene,

the rural Chinese will remember why they
had a fucking revolution in the first place.

Same with Cuba.

It's as if people think they were so much better off under Battista and the war-lords.

Generational amnesia.
