Smashing Pumpkins Singer Corgan: "American Girls Are Sluts"

First Posted: 03/22/09 07:17 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:10 PM ET

NME:

Smashing Pumpkins closed the Main Stage at Carling Weekend: Reading tonight (August 26).

Taking to the stage at 10pm, the Chicago band made their way through 90 minutes of material old and new.

The full moon was amplified against a cloudless sky as they tore through favourites including 'Tonight, Tonight', '1979' and 'Today'.

Midway through the set stage cameras panned the crowd, which included a scantily clad young woman, about whom Corgan commented "There's something about a girl who's willing to take her top off so quickly."

What a load of garbage this post is! This was a throwaway comment made in England, implying that an English girl who took her top off at the gig was being slutty (which, you could argue, she was) and that American girls at rock concerts behave that way too (which, most certainly, they do).

The headline of the story is deliberately misleading -- a partial quote, taken out of context. Nice job, NME ... and nice job Huffpo for not even including Corgan's complete quote in the part of the article reproduced above ...

Billy's just one of those guys like Sting, who attracts this kind of reporting. We know he's got a reputation for being arrogant, so let's dig around for even more reasons to dislike him.

I just think all our lives would be poorer if we ignored somebody's art just because we thought the artist was kind of a tool ...

When it comes to rock stars, it makes no difference in what country you are in, they will turn into sluts at the slightest crook of a finger by a rocker, rapper, popper, you name it.

However they wouldn't be sluts if the stars weren't bigger sluts.

Oh,

You gotta love the nineties. Everything was cooler then. (Picture an old woman waving a gnarled finger) "In my day, rock stars new how to be cool. We had Kurt Cobain and Billy Corgan and we were happy. You young people nowadays with your Arcade Fire and your Polyphonic Spree...Too many members! Who can remember them all?"

Corgan is such a overrated, has-been phony. He had a couple good songs in the mid nineties and that was it. Some friends of mine went to a Pumpkins show in St. Louis where Corgan started ranting about how "St. Louis sucks!" Wow Billy. You're SOOO cool. Trying to be an "anti-rock star" is even more phony than the posturing that often comes with these worthless bands. You were never the voice for anything or anybody and you know it. You couldn't hold a candle to Kurt Cobain as a songwriter or performer. Face it Billy. YOU'RE the one who sucks!
