"I Am Not Gay, I Never Have Been Gay"

Sen. Larry Craig said that he "overreacted and made a poor decision" in pleading guilty to disorderly conduct after his June arrest following an incident in a Minneapolis airport bathroom.

In his first public statement on the arrest, the Idaho Republican said he did nothing 'inappropriate' and also said, "I am not gay."

Back in 1993 I was at a conference in Northern Michigan. I went to the public
restroom and in walk two U.S. Representatives and each took a urinal on either
side of me. Nothing happened though because they were both Democrats, Rep
Conyers and Stupak. true story!
Now when the GOP candidates come to greet me in Iowa I yell out. "Stay away

I am not familiar with the details of his arrest, but I find it troubling whenever there is a possibility of an officer of the state ensnaring a citizen in a victimless crime. It is none of the state's goddamn business when two consenting adults agree to have sex. Admittedly local laws are in effect about fornication or fellatio in public, but to attempt to trap a citizen in a lewd act is beyond the bounds for me, as I oppose, as often as practical, the exercise of unnecessary state power.

I lived in Minnesota years ago, and they take public spaces seriously. A combination of civic pride and general good manners. You can do EXACTLY up to what doesn't impinge on others, and you can't act like an obnoxious pig and make the place look bad.
They have an idea of "the commons" that I thought was generally great. I hope it's still true.
Don't screw with them. They'll fine you for acting like an ass in public. It's nice if you're NOT an ass, and wish to use all those great public spaces.

I seems that you miss the point entirely, which is very hard to believe.

Consider the facts:
Craig:
- was arrested June 11.
- signed his plea papers on Aug. 1.
- did not even consult a lawyer before he signed the plea agreement.
- HAD 7 WEEKS TO CONSULT A LAWYER, but chose not to do so.
- was caught up in an undercover sting operation organized by Minneapolis-St. Paul airport police who had received complaints of sexual encounters by men in a particular restroom at the airport.
- entered and sat in the stall next to the undercover officer.
- began tapping his right foot, touched his right foot to the left foot of the officer and brushed his hand beneath the partition between them. [common signals used by gay men seeking sex in restrooms, such as touching the shoe of the man in the next stall]

Craig said:
- he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct in the hope of covering up fallout from the incident.
- he chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge in the hopes of making it go away.

Craig chose to plead guilty in the hopes that the arrest records, mug shots, and court records would just go poof?

And when two consenting adults agree to have sex, let them do it behidn the garbage dump in the ally, not where my young son can see it in the public bathroom.
