Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered a six-month suspension of activities by his Mahdi Army militia in order to reorganize the force, and it will no longer attack U.S. and coalition troops, aides said Wednesday.

The aide, Sheik Hazim al-Araji, said on Iraqi state television that the goal was to "rehabilitate" the organization, which has reportedly broken into factions, some of which the U.S. maintains are trained and supplied by Iran.

If this guy takes over he's gonna be a meaner badder SOB than Saddam ever was. All this blood and carnage to replace one brutal thug for another.

Was it worth it King George???

If the right people (pun intended) made enough money and increased their power enough, then of course it was worth it! Lives? Hey, the *important* people don't care about whether unimportant people live or die. In fact, the more the cannon fodder die, the more chances the important people have for emotional blackmail.

Pure conjecture, shanester.

Saddam was a very bad man.

You have no way of knowing that Sadr would be worse.

To me, what you wrote sounds like negative spin.

Why do you want to utilize negative spin? Is there an agenda you have?

Would someone please explain to me, why is Sadr still breathing? US Army should have plugged him 3 years ago.

For the same reason they haven't captured Osama bin Laden, he's useful.

Ray guy: Maybe its because the US troops are "horse assing" around rather than getting serious about this war?

Al Sadr is recognizing his militia is fragmented and quite ineffectual for his needs. There are alot of 'mafia-style' hits going on between Shiite Factions. He needs to calm the waters and regroup. This calming action may help Maliki with his negotiations and the Iraqi people to 'live' alittle.

Al Sadr. Do you really think he was controlling anything? I don't. I think the militia's will go right on killing without him.

Al Sadr can't calm anything. He wants to align himself with the US for some of those lush, green taxpayer dollars that flow like milk and honey in Iraq.

You always swallow the bait hook, line & sinker.

The American troops are going to go on an all out assault on the Shiites. Thousands of them are Iraqi military by day death squader by night.

Al-Sadr is like Bush. He just wants position and power. He couldn't give a shit about some rag headed sandal clad dirty religious fanatic. Like Hitler he just uses the masses for his purposes and then throws them away.

This move is being done so he can sit in parliment and negotiate away his countrymen's rights.

You are right bob. Zsa Zsa must have held the story waiting for her rulers at the DNC to tell her they had the talking points worked out.

He is positioning himself to be Maliki's successor. His support was the only reason Maliki won the first go round. Now with the sunni's departing the country and Maliki on shaky ground it's Sadr time!

Whaa? I thought the Mahdi Army was taking over Basra because the British are leaving. Or is this because they're not leaving?

I just scanned the article for "brit" and "Basra" and they don't mention the British, and they only mention Basra in passing. Good luck figuring out what's going on reading newspapers. Another worthless article by a dittohead AP wire "journalist."

The Surge is taking over Basra since the British are leaving. Al-Sadr can't get the cooperation in policing he got from the British so he is waiting out the Surge until we leave. In the mean time US soldiers will have to police Basra without help.

What a clusterf@%k.
