In '08 Race, Even Veterans Turn On McCain

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/28/08 03:44 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

Senator John McCain, R-AZ, may be the one of the only presidential candidates to serve in the United States military. He may also be the most dogmatic of the dwindling group of Iraq war proponents. But among veterans -- a constituency that would seem naturally inclined to such a record -- McCain is dragging behind his three main rivals for the Republican presidential nomination.

According to a recently released Gallup Poll, Republican-leaning veterans prefer both former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani (28 percent) and pseudo-candidate former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson (25 percent) over McCain (13 percent). Even former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who was criticized for claiming his five sons served their country (a la soldiers in Iraq) by campaigning for him in Iowa, matches McCain in support among GOP-leaning vets.

The findings are at once disappointing and problematic for McCain, whose service in Vietnam (where he spent five years as a war prisoner) and work in the Senate on behalf of veterans has earned him their praise. But while the Gallup Poll clearly is unwelcome news for the Arizona Republican, the reasons for McCain's flagging veteran support are hard to pinpoint.

The McCain campaign did not return repeated requests for comment. Those working on behalf of veteran's affairs, however, suggested that past military service did not give the Senator a pass for his current policy positions.

"A veteran supporting another veteran just because he's a vet - they may be favorably disposed to him, but there are other issues on which they would choose a candidate," said Adriel Domenech, communications director for the non-profit Vets for Freedom. Domenech cited immigration and campaign finance as issues that might push Republican vets away from McCain.

Others see McCain's proximity to President Bush as the overriding detriment.

"McCain was critical of Bush from the right on Iraq. He looked different from Bush," said John Fortier, a research fellow with the conservative American Enterprise Institute. "Then Bush had the surge, and it looked a lot like what McCain was proposing. [McCain's] great attraction last time was that he was a maverick... all the sudden now he was stuck with Bush, an unpopular president with an unpopular war."

Both politically and symbolically, McCain's dragging veteran support poses significant problems. Votes are at stake. Ninety-one percent of the approximately 24 million vets in the United States - the majority of them Republicans - cast ballots in presidential elections, according to the membership organization Veterans of Foreign Wars. And while the Iraq war has shifted the political landscape, there is still plenty of room, officials say, for a pro-war candidate to win over an overwhelming portion of the veteran community.

"The war has divided the nation's veterans as much as the country, especially for those vets that have served in a war zone," said Joe Davis, a spokesperson for Veterans of Foreign Wars. "But when you deploy Americans forces you don't go to lose ... McCain is a lifetime VFW member and he has hope [for victory]."

Up to this point, however, excitement for a possible McCain administration simply hasn't materialized. Fifty-two percent of all veterans (Republican and Democrat) may view the Senator favorably, according to the Gallup Poll, but he also has higher negative ratings - 40 percent - than each of his rivals for the Republican nomination.

For a campaign that has already seen its fair share of mishaps, the loss of a seemingly reliable voting bloc is ill-afforded.

"[Being a vet] should help McCain recruit veteran support," said Fortier. "This poll is bad news for him."

The headline should read "even veterans turn on Mcain, after Mcain turns on decency and any sense of morality".

His boat hasn't only sailed, it has sunk.

When this war veteran stood silently by while Kerry was swift boated, the US made torture its policy, our men and women in uniform were sent to their untimely deaths in Iraq, undermanned and under equipped and has acted as a cheerleader for the unlawful invasion and occupation of Iraq he best hope he isn't standing in the Hague along with Cheney and Bush awaiting international justice.

When will the good people of AZ tell this man to stand down as he represents no one's interest but his own ambition and that of the right wing fanatics that have hijacked our country.

In Matthew 7: 15-20, Jesus Christ says: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. By their fruits ye shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Therefore by their fruits ye shall know them."

I supported McCain in 2000. As a veteran, I admired his personal story which was almost the exact opposite of George Bush; however, his position on Iraq is just wrong and I will not vote for any candidate who still believes that invading Iraq was the right thing to do. It just showed poor judgement.

I think Sen. Craig should run for President on the Port-o-poty ticket. At least we will finally get nice, clean toilet stalls in all public toilets throughout America!

I too have a great deal of respect for John McCain for his courage and integrity. However, I cannot support his campaign. I am a veteran of the same war he fought in and the same war the cowardly Bush/Cheney/Rove gang successfully avoided.

Senator McCain has consistently voted against mandatory funding for the VA and even adequate annual funding. Those of us who rely on the VA for medical care for our service connected injuries are being left out in the cold. I, for one, asked Senator McCain for assistance with dealing with the dysfunctional VA. I received no assistance at all. Guess that tells you that I will not be voting for him next year.

It has been posted here quite often that veterans with actual combat time are hardly warmongers. That is true. On the other hand, those same veterans may be too hesitant to go to war. It is a very delicate balance. I have consistently supported the war in Afghanistan and consistently opposed the war in Iraq. That is how I balanced it. (Naturally, I think I am exactly right!)

I believe that what we all want is an intelligent president with personal integrity. We certainly don't have one now when we really need one. I never thought that one man could do so much harm to our nation. I was dead wrong.

Unbelievable that veterans would prefer yet more shirkers as a potential candidate.Because McCain played footsie w/Bush in order to stay in politics and retain power and influence hardly makes him less of a man than the great warriors Guiliani and Romney. What amazing ignorance! Even Democrats are beginning to see some value to McCain's Iraq position. As a Democrat myself, I'm a lot more sympathetic to McCain because he 'has been there and done that,' while none of his competitiors have a clue about military stragegy let alone diplomatic history and strategy.

There's no good news for democrats in Arizona. The poll taken by the university there shows McCain slaughtering Hillary Clinton in the election, so any republican who gets the nomination will win Arizona if Hillary is the dem nominee.
12:02 AM on 08/31/2007
NOT TRUE. Arizonans are fed up with George Bush AND ESPECIALLY MCCAIN! SO DON'T COME HERE AND LIE!
11:05 AM on 08/31/2007
Well, George Bush isn't running in 2008 and John McCain won't get the nomination. He's polling lower in the primaries than Tommy Thompson was before he dropped out.
10:37 PM on 08/30/2007
It must be a very humbling experience for McCain, knowing that he's not ever gonna be President, which has been his goal from day one of his political career, and all because he hitched his star to that of our first retarded President.

That whole group of GOP candidates is pathetic. There isn't a decent candidate among them. They are liars or neocon chickenhawks or Jesus freaks or just plain fucking nuts. What a sad bunch of assholes.
10:50 PM on 08/30/2007
Couldn't agree more.
11:15 PM on 08/30/2007
Is Craig among them? and if he is running could he continue campaigning after his toilet incidence ,or is he going to drop the race ? what a disaster if he continues and win the nomination !

It is believed that McCain collaborated with the enemy, or he got soft treatment while a prisoner in Vietnam. His father was a high ranking Naval officer. Veterans won't say anything, but they have their suspicions.
12:57 AM on 08/31/2007
Didn't McCain turn down an early release from his imprisonment (which had been offered to him because of who his father was) becuse he didn't want special treatment that his fellow POWs weren't getting?

He lost it when he did that "tour" in Iraq, and came back and told us how safe it was, and look, see, we bought rugs.

Then, we found out that he was surrounded by troops and helicopters overhead. Plus the market where he "shopped" got blown to smithereens the next day.

The hugging Bush paid for the wood for the coffin, and the "tour" put the nail in.
