Justice Dept. Investigating Possible Gonzales Perjury

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:44 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

Washington Post:

The Justice Department is investigating whether departing Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales gave false or misleading testimony to Congress on a broad range of issues, including the Bush administration's warrantless surveillance program and the removal of nine U.S. attorneys last year, the lead investigator said today.

The disclosure by Inspector General Glenn A. Fine shows that internal investigations that began with the prosecutor firings have widened substantially to include a focus on Gonzales's actions and statements.

Gonzales announced Monday that he was quitting the Justice Department after seven months of sustained conflict with Congress over the prosecutor dismissals and other issues. He told aides that he had decided his credibility with lawmakers had been too severely damaged to continue in the job.

This corrupt admistration can investigate anything they want. They come up empty every time. These idiots would not find their friends guilty of any wrong doing. Just wait and see.

A major push in the House of Representatives to impeach Attorney Alberto Gonzalez helped spur his resignation. Cheney has committed impeachable offenses. yet, the twenty cosponsors of the articles of impeachment against Cheney do not have the support of the Democratic leadership. Congress Rahn Emanuel wants to keep the occupation of Iraq going until after the 2008 elections. Hillary Clinton wants to keep the occupation going until at least 2017.

The Democrats are weak on Bush and Cheney. The claim is that there is "no evidence for an impeachment." I will spare you the laundry list but the evidence was greater than that used to impeach Nixon or Clinton.

Getting out of Iraq would "drive the price of gasoline up to $10 per gallon and hand over Iraq to Iran," according to the Rethugs.

Looks like an attack on Iran is imminent. The carrier groups deployed, the covert actions underway, the meetings with the French who are on board, and other activity indicate that strike is underway. This would solve all problems, legal and otherwise, for Bush, just as Iraq solved all his other problems.

Really! The justice department is investigating their own boss, err former boss? Isn't that a conflict of interest? Kind of like having the military investigate how well the war is going, to determine who is winning, oh wait never mind.

They requested a special prosecutor, but conservatives don't like special prosecutors anymore.
They don't like them, because we had one in the 1990's and conservatives abused the privilege, and they're scared of payback, and they oughta be.
The weenies.

Gonzalez was the puppet, Rove was the puppet master. With Rove gone, Gonzalez cannot function. Gonzalez was a token Hispanic. He worked at a lawfirm by the name of Vinson and Elkins in Houston where he handled clients such as Enron and Halliburton. Enron was the largest single supporter of Bush's political career in Texas, and Cheney, the CEO of Halliburton, was also a client for which Gonzalez performed legal services.

The Justice Department should bring this matter to a grand jury for criminal indictments.

In the 1994 Bush run for Governor, Rove got tobacco firms, Enron, and Halliburton, amoung others into the front on the issue of tort reform. Rove funneled funds into campaigns for the Texas Supreme Court. Gonzalez was a justice and Ralph Reed worked on Bush's campaign.

Rove handled Gonzalez' campaign while running Bush's. Rove worked for Phillip Morris undermining the then Attorney General's effort to recover compensation for Medicaid funds spent by the state of Texas - billions of dollars -
for treating patients for lung diseases by conducting dirty tricks against the Texas Attorney General, Dan Morales - a push poll spreading smears about him.

Tom Delay used former Representative Richard Pombo and Representative John Dolittle to assist in getting Texas Billionaire Hurwitz out from under the Savings and Loan reimbursement, undermining the FDIC Office of Thrift and its counsel. In the middle of the night they appointed themselves head of a committee, subpoenaed the government's file and made it public to assist Billionaire Hurwitz, a Bush patron.

This is topped by Gonzalez helping conceal Bush's drunk driving conviction from a jury panel by claiming that Bush, as Governor, "does pardons" and serving on a jury would be a conflict of interest.

Vice President Cheney directed the project for the imperial presidency, while Rove took charge of the top-down politization of the federal government. The Geneva Convention, Habeas Corpus, NSA spying Programs and political interference from the top down at every level at the Justice Department.

Impeach Cheney and Bush. Until then the investigations are a waste. Perhaps Gonzo will get a medal from the President and pardon from the supposed trumped up charges of the Democrats in the name of freedom. His successor will also likely be worse, like Chertoff. I envision people like Keith Olbermann and perhaps some of those Democrat hounds in Congress indicted on allegations of treason and revealing State secrets or or obstruction for refusing to divulge sufficient names of their "co-conspirators". Cheney will start war with Iran and seek to postpone elections to protect us all from the gathering threat. Fox News will claim it all needed to stop the terrorists that have infiltrated the democrat party.

Fine will investigate and find that there was no perjury. The democrats wil have handed the ball away to one of Gonzalez own cronies an none of the truth will be brought out by investigation. For the dems to think the DOJ is independant even without fredo is just ridiculous.

Nope....It went to the grand jury. If it hadn't then there would be no need for Gonzales to resign. Res Ipsa Loquitur.

Gonzales sudden resignation didn't smell right to me either. Two weeks earlier he was smiling like the Cheshire Cat and prety much told the Senate to piss up a rope. Then suddenly he goes all mute and up and resigns. The reason is the OIG hs referred Gonzales testimony to the Grand Jury.

My guess is they got Rove too....

I read Fine's letter to Leahy. Now you know why Gonzales resigned. Fine has turned the evidence over to a federal grand jury in Washington. Gonzales is going to get indicted on seven counts of perjury and obstruction.

Two members of his former leadership group at Justice ae singing like Canaries.
