HillRaiser Hsu: From "Ubiquitous" To "Pariah"

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/28/08 03:44 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

Norman Hsu's rise in prominent political circles happened almost as rapidly as his recent dramatic fall, which may include a Justice Department investigation. The Democratic rainmaker, who pleaded guilty on Friday to a 1991 grand theft charge, burst onto the scene three years ago as an affable and extremely generous campaign fundraiser. These qualities -- particularly the latter -- won him the admiration and ear of a cadre of big wig politicos. But perhaps Hsu's most famous beneficiary was New York Senator and current Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

According to a number of people involved in New York politics, Hsu had the type of access to Senator Clinton that the average constituent and even many political insiders could only dream of. The New York Senator was in attendance when Hsu threw a 100-person dinner party for himself at the chic Modern restaurant next to the Museum of Modern Art. In December 2006, The New York Post reported on another event Hsu hosted - this time to celebrate Democratic victories in the 2006 election - during which he grabbed the microphone from the deejay and declared: "If you are supporters of Hillary for President 2008, you can stay. Otherwise, get out!"

The dinners, revelry, and late-night campaigning, however were an outgrowth of all the money that Hsu poured into Clinton's coffers. Listed under various businesses, Hsu personally gave nearly $23,000 to the Senator's campaigns and political action committees, according to a review of campaign finance records. In addition, he served as "Hillraiser" for Clinton's current White House run, a position that tasked him with "bundling" over $100,000 in donations.

"Some people have sex appeal," John Catsimatidis, a major Democratic figure in New York told the Huffington Post. "Norman had checks appeal."

If access were what Hsu was looking for, his donations paid off. One New York Democratic activist claims to have seen the Hong Kong native in Clinton's hotel suite on the night of her 2006 Senate re-election. "He was sitting there all comfy on a sofa," said the source. "You realized he was big money." The Clinton camp acknowledged that Hsu was at the Election Day celebration but, citing conversations with other attendants that night, said he was not in the hotel room.

What that money and access got Hsu remains unclear. The Los Angeles Times reported that Hsu, who serves on the board of Manhattan's New School, "helped host an event at which Clinton was the keynote speaker" and that "Clinton helped steer nearly $1 million to the New School in a congressional earmark for a mentoring program for disadvantaged city youths."

But officials familiar with both the deal and the New York political scene say it's highly unlikely that any quid-pro-quo took place. "The Los Angeles Times made a mistake by saying because [Hsu's] close to Hillary she gives money to the New School," said George Artz, head of the public relations firm George Artz Communications. "She helps the school get money because Bob Kerrey is president."

To be sure, Hsu's political generosity hasn't been limited to Senator Clinton. Over the last three years he has donated more than $600,000 dollars to national, local and municipal officials. He's frequented fundraising events and Democratic gatherings. And according to one politically connected New Yorker, Hsu threw an $18,000 dinner party for Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell at Per Se, an elegant restaurant in the Time Warner building in mid-town Manhattan.

An aide to the governor would neither confirm nor deny whether the event took place. But those familiar with Hsu don't underestimate the extent of his influence.

"I've seen him about 4,000 times in the last three years," Dennis Mehiel, a prominent New York businessman and Democratic figure told the Huffington Post. "If you'd asked me before this, however, what Norman did for a living, I'd have no idea. But he is ubiquitous."

There are also several instances in which Hsu may have instructed business partners or other related individuals to donate to various politicians and political causes. A review of campaign finance records reveals that on several occasions Paul Su, of Dix Hills, New York, made nearly identical contributions as Mr. Hsu. Both donated a combined total of $4,600 to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign on January 26, 2007 and February 2, 2007; $1,000 to Rep. Patrick Murphy on May 18, 2007; and $2,500 to Senator Jack Reed on February 28, 2007.

Su, who on several filings lists his occupation as Dilini Management President (a company which Hsu also listed as an employer), could not be reached for comment. An official with AOPEN America, another company Su worked for, said he is currently in Taiwan and has been for some time.

As news of Hsu's past legal troubles and political machinations became public, many campaigns sought distance. Clinton, for one, gave the $23,000 she received to charity. Senator and Presidential candidate, Barack Obama, Minnesota Senate candidate Al Franken, Rep. Michael Honda of California and Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak have likewise divested Hsu contributions. The cold shoulder may be an unfamiliar experience for Hsu, but it's one, political observers say, he will have to get accustomed to.

"He was walking on a tight rope," explained one insider. "He knew that he had this warrant out. And in this business, once you are tainted you become a pariah."

Update: ABC News is reporting that Hsu has raised "well over $1 million for Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign." This number is significantly higher than the one reported by the Los Angeles Times, which puts Hsu's total fundraising for Clinton at $100,000.

Classic case of example of the DNC/GOP cross-party accusations being at least partially hypocricital, but it's been known for a long time that money and politics are intertwined, which has the problem of throwing all parties concerned into question as to their ultimate motivation and intent. Our country is 9 trillion in debt, good luck getting a straight story on just how many people are in hock for the rest of their lives, and these clowns have had a hand in shaping the national policy that
encourages/perpetuates that circumstance.
Maybe if they made the federal budget about three dollars($3.00) for a decade or so, these kind of people would stop this type of activity...

I mean, how long is Huffpo going to play out this one? It's like in the 90's when the Republicans were going after B. Clinton.

Trying to get something negative associated with Hillary? This is swiftboating if I've ever seen it.

And Giuliani's staff member who just resigned!!

The repubs just can't help themselves...
and the Dems deal in such lowball amounts.. they should take a page from Rove's playbook.. if you are gonna be on the take, take larger amounts! Abramoff's millions, for example.

This post is as transparent an attempt to defile one candidate over the others that it would fit right into a Fox News special.
Prominent mention of anything that could be damning to Clinton - and then weak mention that others were funded as well. The New School section expressed all that could be construed as shady, then the mention that such speculation is probably wrong.
As I recall, Obama initially refused to return the money, but later decided to when he stood alone in his refusal.
Booooo! to this post.

Anti-Hillary Smear on Huffpo
I think if Arianna tries real hard she can keep the picture of Hsu and Hillary up for at least another week. She can add Obama's name for example as someone who took Hsu's money--but of course, not add his pictue. She can add the names of a host of democratic candidates, too. But of course not their pictures either. And all the while she can slander Hillary by keeping the photo of her and Hsu in play. This is Fox tactics. Did she go to Fox dirty Tricks School or what?

Clinton has been to Las Vegas twice both times visiting Hispanic neighborhoods. She promised the culinary union with the casinos to walk the picket line with them. I saw a picture of the members of the culinary union. Not a white or black face among them. Sunset Stations said if we deported illegals he would need 50,000 people to fill their jobs. I suppose this was supposed to let us know what a hardship this would be. To me it meant 50,000 jobs that should have never been taken away from Americans. A vote for Clinton is a vote for amnesty.
Bush gave employers 90 days to sort thru the illegals working for them and fire them. Today I read that has been stopped by AFL-CIO. And also that Bush is allowing Mexican trucks and drivers to now drive anywhere in the U.S.
I give up. I have spent hours sending out petitions and calling politicians. I have spent days sending out info on how disastrous amnesty would be to this country to anyone I could send it to.
Noone has any idea how many terrorists are in this country. Or how many are coming across the border each day. Noone seems interested in getting the border fence up to stop this.
To me it is of utmost importance to successfully close these borders. The Politicians and big business are so worried about votes and money and cheap labor they don't stop to realize that this country is going to be so demoralized and beaten down that we will all stop trying. Our soldiers will come home to no jobs and surrounded by illegals and terrorists and they will also give up. And where will the greedy politicians and big business get their armed forces then. Where will be their protection from Osama? I only hope he gets to the people who fought against deporting the illegals and securing our borders and deals with them before he gets to us.

Hillary donated his contribution of about $ 22K to charity. Obama said he would keep the money but, later said he'll return it.
07:40 AM on 09/01/2007
Where's the list of all the candidates this guy raised money for. Hillary wasn't the only one, but I see every time it is mentioned she gets the full brunt...SHE RETURNED HER MONEY DID ANY ONE ELSE. I see the republicans has a lot of money raised that was unethical, it would have been better to attack them instead of our own. But democratic Hillary haters could wait to throw the mud at her alone.

What is the DLC queen hiding here?
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/08/15/hillary.papers.ap/index.html
No wonder the Clintonites and Bushies share such mutual admiration.CNN plants posing as journalists, classified documents, sweat shops where scum peck away at the keyboards, pioneers like Ruppert and Hsu.....

People are delusional if they think the American population would trust her with the power of the Presidency. There is one path to defeat for the left in 08 and it is through Hillary and her obnoxious cult.
02:05 PM on 09/01/2007
Good point! That's just what it is, a cult of personality. And that is basically all she has going for her. Let's face it, the one overarching fact is that she is where she is because she is "Mrs. Bill Clinton."
Her constituency? Probably urban yuppie social liberals and media sycophants who would otherwise support Giuliani, Hollywood "moguls", and a select group of feminists who are so enthralled by the prospect of a woman president that they are perfectly willing to overlook "stand by your man";the DLC and DNC establishments.
Who is not included? The rank and file union people, displaced workers [thanks to Billary's love of free trade, Nafta, etc.], the urban poor [Billary's welfare "reform"], progressives and individuals in the peace movement [Billary's "bomb Serbia and aspirin factory"]

Great article.I really like how it completely glosses over Hsu's criminal history so nobody who reads it has the foggiest idea that the man was a swindler in a Ponzi scheme that took people for millions of dollars.

totally typical with typical bad photo imagery and tag line like some typical karl rove mission accomplished bullshit. i guess arrianna decided if she can't beat them then she will join them. tell just enough truth, distort it, don't admit what your guy has done and depend on imagery for the stupid people that don't like to read so much. brilliant!

why has this story been up here for so long.

OK. He campaign received money from Mr. Hsu. We get it. Now, let's get over it.

I can not understand why Arianna cannot support whom she wants to. It's her blog site and it's her buisness whether or not she supports Hillary or someone else.

There is nothing in any rule book that says one must support ALL of the party's candidates. What would be the point?

I won't vote against Hillary in the sense of voting for a Thug party member but rather simply not vote. She will be no different than Shrub. She wants to stay in power and if that means bending over to corporate K-Street lobbyists and taking money from people who want to help turn America into a corporate fascist state she will be happy to provide the vaseline.

Her entire move is out of sheer ego.

Her statement that the surge is working sealed my vote and it won't be for her. I'll vote for Edwards, MAYBE Obambi, but never Hillary.

Never

yeah....hillary will be just like shrub.....just like life with shrub has been just like life with bill clinton. i'm so sick of people telling me that intelligent people like the clintons run the country exactly the same as our current shit for brains president. if you think life in 01-today is the same as life was 92-00 then you are living under a rock.

and forgive me if i want a shrewd politician to run for president. i watched gore and kerry almost win when the nasty republican machine came at them. i don't have that worry with hillary. she will give as good and maybe even better as she gets. can you say that about obama and edwards? when a swift boat scenario comes at them, will they have what it takes to be ruthless in dealing with it? if not then they will lose. they will lose just like gore and kerry did. and yes gore did really win....but he also gave up.

Great, another hit piece on Hillary.. Just what we need, Democrats who work alongside Repukes attacking our own candidates because theyre too much like Republikkkans. So you become what you fight against.
07:24 AM on 09/01/2007
So those who are against turning the Democratic party into a clone of the corporate cons are like corporate cons because they are against the DLC who want to turn the party into a clone of the corporate cons.
Your logic is as coherent as this post!
11:32 AM on 09/01/2007
Another 'hit piece'? Isn't obvious to you that people have many REAL reasons not to support her that YOU are willing to overlook?

These issues are NOT going to just go away. More and more, things keep croping up, like this Hsu problem.

I am a Dem and she is NOT one of my candidates. Since when do you hillaryites think that if we don't support HER that we are not loyal to our party?

Get over it!! She is NOT well liked or respected by many Dems and independents.

Are you willing to go down in defeat with hillary knowing that so many Dems will not support her?

It sound like it's hillary or nothing. Is it that hard to see the handwriting on the wall?

If you really loved your party, you would be willing to work with other Dems in finding a candidate that CAN win?
