Duke Lacrosse Prosecutor Sentenced To One Day In Jail

Superior Court Judge W. Osmond Smith III could have sentenced Nifong, who had already been stripped of his law license and had resigned from office, to as many as 30 days in jail and given him a fine as high as $500. Instead, he opted for a largely symbolic punishment -- the public humiliation of sending a prosecutor to jail -- that he said would help protect the integrity of the justice system.

"If what I impose with regard to Mr. Nifong would make things better or different for what's already happened, I don't know what it would be or how I could do it," Smith said.

The judge sent a good message. One day or a few years, it's still was the right thing to do. Nifong was disgraced and humilated, something well desereved.

Nifong IGNORED exculpatory evidence. He was willing to railroad those guys into prison and KNEW they had done nothing. One day of jail? At least he lost his profession.

Three innocent white fellows, get caught up in the system. outrage, outrage. "Send the prosecutor to jail for life and take everything from him, for the rest of his life". Call the stripper hoe hoes. They were paid off. Are you kidding me, in North Carolina 2 black women lied on 3 white fellows and charges not filed against them? Right, right!

The next time we are criticized for Playing the race card or why we are angry. Multiply the anger you have for this prosecutor, O.J. and multiply it by a few million.

Now change the colors of the people involved. Two white female strippers, claim they were raped by 3 black fellows. No one will question the prosecutor, no matter how its handled. By the time the strippers change their stories, the black fellows, ON THE ADVICE OF THEIR PUBLIC DEFENDER, will have taken a plea bargain and serving AT LEAST 10 TO 20 YEARS.

These strippers were paid off.

Your entire arguement is absurd. From the very begining this thing was a mess. Nifong did not investigate the alleged crime but went running with it during an election cycle. He did not even meet with the stripper. The other stripper that was with her repudiated her claims. I am outraged when ANY INNOCENT PEOPLE are caught up in the machinizations of a corrupt goverment.

Sorry, after 7 years working in ERs and many rape kits, I have yet to find one that was truly a rape. Most were "I screwed up and now someone else is going to pay"....

Nifong should have gotten the max in this case. He did not ivestigate the case, otherwise he would have seen the holes in the strippers story. The stripper did get something from this. She got her tuition aid for by jesse ("hey is that a t.v. camera?") jackson. To portray her as being used is ludicrous, as she was a willing participate in the whole affair. She was not attacked and she was not raped.

"Protect the integrity of the justice system." Are you joking!!! A justice system that lets double murderers walk if you have enough money to "buy" your freedom from a corrupt, unethical and immoral Dream Team. A justice system that refuses to indict Karl Rove because the prosecutor didn't think he could "win" so he decided against charging Rove.

A maximum sentence of thirty days and $500 for deliberately trying to destroy the lives of three innocent young men by lying and withholding evidence. Nifong is a criminal who deserves to serve a lengthy prison sentence. White collar criminals are often given a get-out-of-jail-free pass because of who they are.
