eneath the feel-good simplicity of buying your way to carbon neutrality is a growing concern that the idea is more hype than solution.

According to Native Energy, money from "An Inconvenient Truth," along with payments from others trying to neutralize their emissions, went to the developers of a methane collector on a Pennsylvanian farm and three wind turbines in an Alaskan village.

As it turned out, both projects had already been designed and financed, and the contributions from Native Energy covered only a minor fraction of their costs. "If you really believe you're carbon neutral, you're kidding yourself," said Gregg Marland, a fossil-fuel pollution expert at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee who has been watching the evolution of the new carbon markets. "You can't get out of it that easily."

The race to save the planet from global warming has spawned a budding industry of middlemen selling environmental salvation at bargain prices.

Construction standards regulations

Food safety regulations

We cannot control the climate. I would hope that is a point of agreement. There are things we can do, adapt, stop building in floodplains, stop coastal development, conserve energy, support sustainable agriculture, invest in R&D for alternatives to fossil fuels.

Of course we knew about these options thirty and forty years ago. Have we successfully acted to prevent our own demise? No. Our politicians continue to pander to Big Money, and we let them.

So now the sky is falling. Let the knee jerk reaction policies begin.

And the climate apocalyptics can rant and rave, also.

No matter how much the climate deniers rant and rave, they cannot change what is happening to Planet Earth as the result of mankind"s release of greenhouse gases since the industrial revolution. People throughout the world are seeing with their own eyes how global warming has begun to impact the environment. Therefore, those of us who have a deep and abiding concern about the future of the human race should not expend a lot of time and energy debating climate deniers on blogs like this. Rather, let"s focus our attention on finding the ways and means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to mitigate the negative consequences of global warming.

It's what happens when the so called free-market forces try to regulate anything. The pockets open up and the cash flows in. This while our planet continues it's downward spiral.

Government regulation is the only answer.

Doesn't it depend on what type of offset you're talking about?

Carbon credits IS a scam. I e-mailed Gore to ask why he would even consider such a thing. I received a laundry list of how it would help corporations, bingo. To help corporations will not help the average joe one bit. It's all smoke and mirrors to allow big polluting corp more time to pollute. Thanks Mr. Gore but on this issue you are wrong.

I think the whole carbon offset trading amounts to a new funny-money market, a parked car burns no fuel, and these people are going to milk every plug nickel that they can out of the current status quo instead of just focusing on things that'd really accelerate change, like putting 'green' fuels heavily on the market.

There's two places that we really burn the old dino-juice, one is transportation, the other is heating purposes, furnace oil etc. We need to learn how to do both tasks without using oil imports. Chase out the 3-card-monte 'environmentalists', and get down to the brass tacks of how to get through a work-week without enriching OPEC et. al....

Shhh.....can't we just let this drop? I've been printing out carbon credits off my computer for months now and selling them to kids in the junior high school's ecology club for 10 bucks each. They feel better and I have beer money.

I'd hate to see it end.

Follow the Goreacles money right to Generation Investment Management, a London-based company with offices in Washington, D.C., for which he serves as chairman. This looks like Buggywhips.com from the dot.com bust. Say didn't Algore have something to do with that too?

You can't reduce energy consumption by producing more energy. Malthus is still alive brothers. Foresting the Appalachian Mountains with wind mills.Incidentally these are built with taxpayer subsidies. Investors are rushing in to claim the best mountain peaks. You pay a premium for the juice. It's not going to solve anything. Produce energy till the earth glows red. We'll all be warm.

primordialsoup somehow thinks that my understanding of the scientific method has something to do with professionals disagreeing over this issue. i'm not going to pretend to be a scientist like half the dimwits on this post. i dont have to. because i can look at things in an unbiased manner and see through the bullshit. it doesnt take much. hell this story is a testament. while these genius' were engulfing themselves in the "hip" side of this debate, i was watching both sides. i went along with it, until i started actually listening to the ever growing number of professionals who dispute the claims of man made global warming. then i began analyzing al gore's argument in comparison to george w's argument (the terrorist will follow us here..). i realized it was the same exact thing. then it dawned on me that all of this GW talk really got going once people began turning away from this war. any intelligent person can conceive the idea they are being fooled by more than one side of the political spectrum. then there are people like this. people who think championing for the media darlings is going to solve all their problems, because cool actors and musicians support their claims and its just an all around hip thing to do. and i honestly believe there is no hope for these people. they are going to be the downfall of our civilization.

For someone who doesn't know squat about science, you're pretty arrogant. Have you figured out what the scientific method is yet?
