Mexico's president drew a standing ovation from legislators as he chided Americans for new border fences and their "humiliating treatment" of illegal immigrants during his State of the Union speech on Sunday.

But President Felipe Calderón leveled criticism at his own country as well, warning that Mexico is headed for a crisis if it does not create more jobs, improve education, crack down on tax evaders and find an alternative to its dwindling oil reserves.

This nationalism at it finest

Funny that these are the same people who don't even pay attention to there own state of the union in american and yet people pundits around here watch and saw the State of the union of Mexico.

The solution to this is simple.

Enact mirror, reciprocal immigration policies to Mexico's.

Immediate deportation or jail for anyone illegally crossing the border. Long prison sentences for anyone violating the laws, in hellhole jails. No property ownership in prime areas, and limited business ownership. No ability to serve in government. Prohibit working here but sending money back there. Etc etc etc.

Maybe a voluntary boycott of vacations to Mexico, and imports of their vegetables, etc.

Then let's see how long this tin-horn piss ant's balls start to shrivel up, back to normal size.

I have lived in Mexico for the past ten years. (Guaymas,Sonora. During that time, I have witessed first hand the pervasive corruption that makes life so miserable for native Mexicans. My family is Mexican.

The Mexican immigrants are dying to get out of Mexico. They are not dying to get into the US. There is a clearly defined difference between the two motivations. A recent Pew Hispanic poll showed that more than 60% of all Mexicans across the entire ecomonic spectrum would like to live anywhere else but Mexico.

Stealing in Mexico is an accepted method of supporting one's family. Unfortunately, government officials have honed it to an artform. For example, we are sending the precios little Mexican boy we are raising to a private Catholic school because the public educatioal system is so dysfunctional. His teachers are nuns. We have to bribe even the nuns so that he will be called on in class and his grades will not suffer.

The richest man in the world, Carlos Slim, purchased Telmex for pennies on the dollar from Carlos Salinis who was one of, if not the, most corrupt presidents in Mexico's history. Slim has used this monopoly to divert billions of dollars from the Mexican public to his own bank account. Salinis entered the Mexican presidency with modest means. He left the presidency and Mexico with an estimated $9 BILLION.

Slim, Salinis, and others of the same ilk live like kings while the rest of the country wallows in poverty. If there was ever a need for regime change it would be in our next door neighbor. Bad schools, bad medical care, bad streets and highways, scandalous utility bills, unpure water and the list goes on with the crowning black mark being that there is NO opportunity to improve one's quality of life short of leaving Mexico. What a mess!

Good post.

And a good example of what happens when politicos enact policies that enable them to meddle in private businesses. Corporate socialism at its finest. Contrast to Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, who created their spots on the Forbes list by thinking and hard work - not government favors, backed by power of law.

PapaJim - Thank you for the post. I can clearly see why people cross the border. I knew there was corruption in Mexico, but your post clearly gives examples of how difficult and awful life can be because of it.

Enid, I think I get what you are saying and I think it's OK, but we're not there yet. I think when people are selfless and naturally giving, then borders won't matter and govt. won't be something to rail against. We're not there yet.

Maybe millions of Canadians ARE crossing the border. They're just so mild-mannered and polite nobody pays attention to them.

I think you are missing the point on what the Mexican President Calderon is saying! What he is saying is that you build a wall across the Mexican boarder because of illegals and terrorist. Why is it that the US does not build it across the Canadian boarder. Illegals and terrorist walk across the Canadian boarder. It is that the US is playing favorites and they want to keep cheap labor cheap!

By the Mexican President speech is talking to his people of his country. He has a right! He is the President of Mexico! Last time I checked Mexico is it's own nation!

Lauris, I have relatives in Canada and visit them once a year. Illegal workers do not cross the border by the millions or even hundreds. The Canadian Immigration Dept. runs a tight ship and Americans, Mexicans, or people from any other country cannot cross the border and work.

The Democratic Party really needs to WAKE UP and listen to the American people!! This is a liberal blog and still the vast majority of Americans are anti ILLEGAL immigration yet the Dems seem clueless to this - that or their lust for future votes is making them stupid.

The Dems USED to be the party of the working man and woman but NO MORE! They (along with some scuzbucket unions) are all for SCAB illegal labor that is undercutting wages for most Americans in lower to midlower economic brackets. THAT IS DISGUSTING AND A MAJOR REASON WHY MANY DEMS ARE NOW SWITCHING TO INDEPENDENT STATUS.

It speaks volumes that the Dems were hand in hand with Bush on the recent amnesty bill - Dems ought to be ashamed PERIOD!

IF AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS IS WHAT BARACK, HILLARY ETC WILL BRING TO THE PRESIDENCY THEN THEY CAN COUNT ON LOSING IN 2008.

Does anyone know how easy it would be for a terrorist to get into Mexico ?

If they can, they can just waltz over into our border with the others.

Maybe they already have ?

The EU has quite an illegal immigrant problem as well.

I was living on the southern coast of Spain in 1999 when I saw a boatload of Africans land in a wooded area and debark.

There were about 50 of them, they ran for the woods - but they had the misfortune of landing almost on top of a military installation.

The Spanish Marines and Guardia Civil had them rounded up in short order, anyone who was not quick to comply with orders was beaten down on the spot.

I also lived in Spain for a few years in the 70's when "El Caulillo" Francisco Franco was in power. At the time anyone caught on certain beaches at night would be shot on sight - the assumption was that they must be a spy, smuggler or illegal alien.

But things have changed and now with a more "humane" approach Spain is in crisis:

There must be some middle ground we can find.

The Mexican govt. should be HUMILIATED that its citizens have to sneak over the border to the US to find work!

This whole business of illegal immigration centers on one fact: Mexico has plenty of oil and resources, but its corrupt government and shittyeconomic system perpetuates failure, just like most countries in Latin America. The mindset of the leaders is to sustain power and wealth at the top and screw those at the bottom. (That goes for the communists and the conservatives both!)

I hope Pelosi's people are reading these comments. I'm a progressive, the site's progressive, yet 90% of the comments here are from people appalled by the rights illegal immigrants are demanding. For some reason Pelosi et al. assume the majority of progressives are desperate to grant legal status to illegal aliens. But nearly everyone I know views it as: a.) rewarding people for breaking the laws; b.) diminishing the job opportunites of poor LEGAL immigrants; c.) a massive drain on communities' limited resources; and/or d.) worsening the nightmare predicted for Social Security. Maybe Peolosi is thinking the "Big Picture" is to be the party which welcomes with open arms the poor, huddled masses "Desperate for a job to feed their families." (Especially if their voting block is growing by leaps and bounds.) But legal immigrants, I believe, are also against wholesale legalization and resent the idea of it. Nevertheless, I'm sure Peolosi will push thru a "Path to Citizenship" when she's got the votes for it. What the majority of us want doesn't seem to make a difference.

And, of course, that is what is most troublesome rednecks, that once they become "citazins", they might vote for Democrats. "citazinship" should be offered only to those who promise to vote for Republicans.

Hilarious!
