Shortly after President Bush took office in 2001, Michael Chertoff, then head of the Justice Department's criminal division, met with the conservative group Judicial Watch. It wanted criminal charges brought against Hillary Rodham Clinton in connection with a lavish fundraising event in Los Angeles the year before.

"Chertoff personally assured us he would pursue it," the group's president, Tom Fitton, said recently, recalling the meeting with several top Justice officials. "They said they weren't afraid of taking on the Clintons."

Justice did not pursue a case against the senator from New York, but instead went after one of her fundraisers, David Rosen, who eventually was acquitted.

Now Atty. Gen. Alberto R. Gonzales has announced his resignation, brought down in part by allegations that he let politics influence Justice Department decisions. And Chertoff, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, is a prominent candidate to succeed him.

If Hillary Clinton has done something illegal why is it "partisan" to prosecute her for it ?

Damn! I'm going to have to appologize to Chertoff if I ever see him. From observing some of his previous efforts, I thought him a "do nothing" kind of fellow.
But at least he can take after a Clinton. (Or says he can/will.) That shows him to be a member of that vast right wing conspiracy that she told us about and that has since taken over the country. (And she should know about it, being a part thereof.) But, no, he won't investigate any other Republicans.
In reality he won't investigate her either; Murdock wouldn't like it.

Just look at that quote: the whole justice department wasn't "afraid to take on the Clintons". And not afraid to waste our taxpayer money doing it - again.

This is going to backfire on good 'ol Chertoff and the people backing him.

This attack is also being done to take away from the debate which is now finally going on because of the release of the Mershiemer (sp?) report which states in a nutshell that Isreal is working the US for continued support internationally over and above what is in the best interests for the United States and the American people.

Did anyone hear the interview that Terry Groce (sp?) ("Fresh Air" program) conducted on NPR last night regarding this book and report?

This is why HIllary is going to be attacked, they have to change the subject and deflect honest discussion about the Meiershimer book, which pretty much makes the same points that President Carter did in his book. Carter was attacked as well if you remember.....

"Chertoff pledged to pursue criminal charges against Hillary Clinton." Senator Clinton is already the most investigated woman in American history. If Ken Starr had some information that he could have twisted into some shape to present it as a platform for indictment of Hillary Clinton, he would have. I believe the political hack, Starr, had at least the talent of this political hack, Chertoff. Of recent times, Starr has admitted he went to far in going after the Clinton's. If Chertoff does this also, he too, will come up just as empty and actually help Senator Clinton. When, as likely, she becomes president, she will remember. Chertoff should, if nominated and confirmed, pursue being a real and worthy Attorney General, reversing the current corrupted, partisan status that the Justice System now suffers and once again become the crown jewel of the federal system.

Chertoff, is a political hack, he is yellow, and does not have the guts.

Take some real sound advise Chertoff, et al, *DON'T WRITE A CHECK, YOUR ARSES CAN'T COVER*!

We, the People are fed-up with all this non-sense.

Here's my theory.

Hillary and her husband are both going around the country "explaining" her high negatives as being the effect of 15 years of "swiftboating" attacks on her. Just like Karl Rove, they are trying to turn a negative (nobody likes her) into a positive (she's a victim).

What a terrible argument. Why does Bill Clinton get treated like a rock star, and have high favorable ratings, given that he was attacked a whole bunch more than his wife?

Hillary has unfavorable ratings among Democrats because (1) she is a Republican pretending to be a Democrat, (2) she supports extremely damaging policies such as the war in Iraq and the coming war in Iran, (3) she favors outsourcing of jobs and the continued destruction of the working people in this country, (4) she's being financed by the corporate rulers, not by real people, and (5) she's just not very likeable.

Nonetheless, wouldn't it be convenient for Hillary if there suddenly was a big story proving that she was right. She is a "victim" of a right-wing witch hunt. (Her husband was, by the way, but not her, and people love her husband).

Maybe her close personal friend Rupert Murdoch could get some "insider" to come up with a story to support the claim that Hillary is a victim of the right wing.

Yeah, sure. Poor Hillary. With millions of corporate dollars in her coffers to buy the Presidency. She's such a rebel, such an agent of "change," the right is after her.

Hillary isn't a Republican pretending to be Democratic, because honestly, there's no need for the charade. Whether people want to admit to it or not, she and Obama are by far the most intelligent candidates of either party, and I would really like to see these two on the same ticket. It's too bad that Karl Rove and others have it in for her, and the only reason for that is because they know that she will do a much better job in 4 years than they did wasting our time and money in 8! And anyone who is foolish enough to believe that there's any politician who would sleep with the enemy if in fact it wouldn't prove beneficial to them shouldn't be allowed to participate in political discussions because they obviously don't understand the nature of Washington.

Regardless of what Hillary's politics are, she and Bill have been hounded nonstop by the republicans for many years. It's not anyone's imagination.

They've been subject to constant investigation of one form or another. The fact that so little has been shown from these investigations is a positive for the Clintons.

How many republicans could have been subject to so much investigation and came up so clean? Especially George and Laura Bush. Bush's sell-off of stock when his dad was prez was just as illegal as Martha Stewart's little transgression. Did Bush serve time for this crime? No. There was never an investigation.

Let's see. Bush was given money to invest in an oil company he subsequently ran into the ground. If memory serves me, one of the contributors to that oil company was a member of the Saudi Arabian Royal Family. Was this little transaction ever looked at very closely? No. Do we know if it was illegal in any way? No. Has there been an investigation by our government to see if it was legal. I don't think so.

Do you think if Bill and Hillary had been the receipents of the same money from the same prince to invest in the same oil company, that that transaction would have been investigated by a federal prosecuator?

btw, I'm not planning on voting for Hillary, but your comments aren't honest.

Campaign law reform is needed before there is even a Representative democracy in the United States. The elections have turned into a circus- an orgy of spending and full-employment for media pundits and phony right-wing think tankers funded by an elite whose concentration of power is obscene.

The system is so dysfunctional that no person of conscience or good will has emerged unscathed by the trials and tribulations of the election money-machine that corrupts the candidates..

The candidate is already bought and sold long before the primaries. By the time the election comes around, no principled person could survive intact. The MIC and AIPAC and the MSM are the big winners, the people lose.

Chertoff is showing the TV audience how long Gonzo's unit is when "angry". Gonzo is showing the TV audience how short he is.

The Rule of Law is Safe in their hands! Can you believe it? The tall, ghoulish one was a sitting Judge. The short, stupid-looking one was a Texas Supreme Court Justice!

God, when I think what Hunter Thompson is missing, I want to weep!

Taking money from a criminal is no crime you moron. Especially if no one knew he was one.

The real criminals are republiCONs. How many have been indicted, or arrested for sex crimes or corruption in the last couple of years? I would be willing to bet there are over a dozen.

And what do the dems have? One moron who kept 90k in his fridge.

Now at least the republiCONs HAVE increased their base to include toe tapping mens room sex fiends. Just the edge they may need in 08.

Vote republiCON. They put the men in the mens room.

Interesting that you'd describe a group of people you don't know anything about as being totally clueless about the Hsu story. You get all your information from Fox News, dontcha?
Unlike the right-wing Kool-Aid drinkers, we liberals listen to more than one source, then we use the minds we were given to decide for ourselves what we will or will not believe.
We don't suck down the party pablum like the neocons.
I'll bet you believed John McCain, too.

Interesting story of misconduct allegations against Chertoff in the "Amerikkan Taliban" case, and when he worked at Justice, before his incompetence and politicization earned him a promotion to Fatherland Security Department.
