Scientists now say they have discovered the "skinny" gene. And they've found this lucky batch of DNA in a variety of animals, according to a report published Tuesday in the journal Cell Metabolism.

"This gene is in every organism from worms to humans," says the study's senior author, Dr. Jonathan Graff, an associate professor of developmental biology and internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. "We all have it. It's very striking."

Funny Obesity was a Virus that may be able to be treated- something you catch - a public health issue. This week it's a genetic flaw- a personal problem- it'll be your own fault that you came from a lineage that did not posses this skinny gene. But perhaps they are both better reasons than people are just fat & lazy. Hopefully these two finding will work together to come to a common good- we also do not need to be anorexic.

Running is the solution. And the best measurement is a mile. If you can run a seven minute mile or less and you do it four or five times a week I bet you can eat almost anything you want and stay slim. I eat like a slob and I am 5'11" 165lbs. Whenever I start slacking on the running is when I gain weight.

four-to-five seven minute miles a week keeps weight off? On what planet?

I don't know how old you are, but the "eat like a slob" and run it off method will catch up to you sooner than later. Diabetes, heart attacks, and metabolic disorders don't discriminate just because your BMI (Body Mass Index) is normal. Do a blood screen and body composition test and you might be surprised at how "fat" (sometimes called being "skinny fat") you might be from a percentage standpoint, with a reference for a heathy male at 18% bodyfat or less.

Yeah, but I have been training hard for years with intervals, recovery time etc... No way I could run a seven minute mile. Maybe an eight minute mile for a short run, such as a 5k, but that's it, and that's with optimal training. Running ability is so genetic. It's not fair. At least, though, I got the skinny gene, I think.

Does Huffpost have a spelling and grammar ruiner? Because I am fairly certain that I did not make THAT many spelling and grammatical errors in my previous post.

showing the ignorance of our times, why is it "lucky" to have a "skinny" gene when it is becoming more obvious all the time that "skinny", in many cases, is just as unhealthy as being, unskinny. It is arguable that carrying some weight (morbid obesity aside) is far healthier. Have you ever seen a "skinny" person weather a serious illness where an "unskinny" person is able to pull through simply because they are more substantial and can withstand the weightless of said illness? Yeah, skinny people are so lucky. Love live ET and Inside Edition!

No I have never heard of a fat person weathering an illness better than a skinny person. Keep reinforcing the myth that it is natural and healthy to be overweight.

Well, America? Make up your minds - which is worse, anorexia or obesity? Really - it's rare that the American media focuses on obesity - they're more worried that girls will try to become anorexic or bulimic.

I had a girlfriend (we're still friends) who was (and still is) very skinny - and it didn't come from dieting. She just has very small bones. Now, she sits around all day watching bad horror movies on DVD, and was actually proud of her fat thighs. (To be fair, she doesn't have a car, and these days she is forced to walk around, actually putting some muscle on her legs, making her look much better.)

Furthermore, I understand that since 2004 (probably earlier), the US has become the fattest nation on the planet. As has been stated before, we really do need to do something about our culture* and lifestyle.

(*yes, I can hear hear some of you saying, "Culture? In America?")

Why don't they focus on finding an affordable cure for Aids and Cancer instead of concentrating on this nonsense?

If Aids and Cancer made you fat they would.

An excellent point...so obvious and sensible.

Curiously, most liberals do not possess this gene as evidenced by the number of raging fat asses on welfare.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:30 PM on 09/05/2007

A valid argument could be made that there are, pound for pound, more fat-assed republican rednecks than fat-assed liberals on welfare. A VERY valid argument I think.

I bet there are many on welfare who are not liberal. See, they cannot afford an education.

I don't buy this. A friend of mine was as skinny as I am. Then she started binge-eating (some a**hole broke her heart...) and now she's fat, depressed and can't seem to regain her optimal weight. Her "skinny gene" is not helping her...

I don't overeat, I exercise daily and I'm a vegetarian. Never been fat in my life. Simple as that. Some people tell me that later in life things will change, but my mother is still very lean, even after going through menopause. Same diet, no overeating, plenty of exercise.

I'm 65, and wear the same size Levis that I did in High School. I never consume more calories than I expend. It's not a great mystery. By the way, that would be size 31 Levis.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:59 PM on 09/05/2007

Hey I wear size 31 levis too. Same as when I was 16,
and I am as hard as a rock. I prefer the term thin or slim over skinny.
Lean and mean, now that's right on.
I think a person's body shape and size manifests itself signifigantly in their personality and their interests. This is somewhat true for me. I love long hikes and a minimal, balanced diet. Who even has time to shop for, prepare, eat, and clean up after three meals a day?
I have other stuff to take care of, fast food is not even an option.
I can wait for a nice dinner in a few hours.

Yeah, I love how fools say "I don't eat anything, and I still gain weight.." Stop eating, you WILL shrivel-up and die. Period. People are so dishonest with themselves. It's not even a matter of science, it's about honesty with yourself. Losers

I'm 47 and have to buy my shirts in the young men's section or "slim fit" shirts because for my neck size (16") "men's" shirts assume a 36-38" waist, and baloons out ridiculously. My waist is a 31" also. Also, remember when "loose fit" pants were called "huskys?" It's the clothing industry normalizing being fat.

Look, there are genetic causes and environmental causes. I know people who eat less than me and are overweight.

Adopted children are more likely to be the weight of their natural parents. I like to think of the skinny jean as the obesity resistance gene. Those who don't have it would be thin in another environment, but not surrounded by fast food.

Also, do you not think that there are genetics to appetite as well? Some people do have larger appetites. Studies have shown that no one can control their eating 24/7 when surrounded by food, unless their appetite is reduced. The key to weight loss is satisfying and reducing your appetite by lifestyle change, which includes eating different foods, keeping foods out of the house and totally giving up some foods. Those who have obesity prone genetics have to engage in serious vigorous exercise for over ten hours a week, as well. For people who are prone to obesity, this is a constant battle. I am lucky, not a saint.

Having the genes does not help if your food intake is corrupted with sugars and salts that increase hunger and thrist.

I know of a great weight loss program, it's called 'honest work'. They even pay you money as an incentive, if you do a good job at it...put DOWN the government donut, and slowly back away...LOL

They found a fat gene and now a skinny gene but our population's obesity rate continues to grow.

When will they put all these gene discoveries to good use?

Hint: don't get fat in the first place. Plus shows like the biggest loser is just sickening. What's to be so proud about losing something you never should have gained in the first place. Calorie Restriction, Gastric Bypass, or Gene Therapy...all doomed to fail without a drastic change in lifestyle.

Yeah, but what are people supposed to do who became fat in childhood?

I'm lucky, I may have at least one, or maybe two copies of that skinny gene. Other people may not. If you have a slow metabolism and/or a large appetite it can be very difficult.

Of course, an environment where daily high calorie junk food and constant sodas and juice drinks exist isn't helping at all.

I do hate that "biggest loser" show, though. It's extremely unhealthy to be that obsessed. Lifestyle change and aggressive exercise are much better choices. Of course, if I were a hundred pounds heavier I would have a bypass in a second, despite potential complications.

Give themselves for adoption to better parents? ;)
