Roll Call reports:

Sen. Larry Craig (R) opened the possibility of reversing his stated intention to resign from the Senate on Sept. 30 in a voice mail message obtained by Roll Call that the Idaho conservative inadvertently left at a wrong number.

Craig left the digitally recorded message on the recipient's mobile phone voice mail Saturday morning, about a half-hour before he announced his intention to resign his Senate seat at month's end. The message was provided to Roll Call by the phone's owner, who is a Washington, D.C., resident not involved in politics and is not the person the Senator was trying to reach. Craig discussed his forthcoming announcement more as a strategy to rehabilitate his political fortunes than a statement about his looming departure.

"Yes, Billy, this is Larry Craig calling. You can reach me on my cell. [Sen.] Arlen Specter [R-Pa.] is now willing to come out in my defense, arguing that it appears, by all that he knows, that I've been railroaded and all of that," Craig said on the voice mail. "Having all of that, we've reshaped my statement a little bit to say it is my 'intent' to resign on Sept. 30.

"I think it is very important for you to make as bold a statement as you are comfortable with this afternoon and I would hope you could make it in front of the cameras," Craig continued. "I think it would help drive the story that I am willing to fight, that I've got quality people out there fighting in my defense, and that this thing could take a new turn or a new shape; it has that potential."

Although it could not be determined who the Senator was trying to reach when he incorrectly dialed the phone number, Craig recently hired Washington, D.C., lawyer Billy Martin, who put out a statement Saturday in support of his new client.

I REALLY need to jump in here and explain something that EVERYONE needs to understand about Larry's little incindent in the men's room ..... when the Senator was passing his LEFT hand under the stall divider back and forth as the officer so clearly nailed him on (wedding ring!) .... the Senator was signaling that he was ready for the young man to put his erect penis under the stall divider so the Senator could suck on it! THAT IS HOW IT IS DONE. During the taping of the interview with the young officer you can sense the Senator's huge discomfort with having to admit to the young man face to face that Larry wanted the young man to cum in his face. THAT IS THE FACT. Sorry to gross you all out but hey public sex is a messy business ..... just like politics.

Pardon me, if I don't give a damn how you know this scenario.

You are excused ... and please note: Senator Craig is and "old" man being in his 60's and the officer was a "young" man being in his 20's... no children involved. Please remember sex is fun and happy healthy people do it everyday!

Do you believe he's being punished by the republican party for being a homosexual or for admiting lude behavior -----> http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=440

He's simply being punished by the Republicans for embarrassing them. Hire whores (male or female), chase underage interns (male or female), or get off on public sex (this isn't the first of THOSE stories I've heard either). But for God's sake don't be stupid enough to get caught at it!

IT MUST BE THE MONEY. HE CAN'T LIVE ON $132,000 A YEAR RETIREMENT WHILE THE REST OF US STRUGGLE ON $30,000-$60,000 A YEAR. IT IS JUST TOO TOUGH.

He has to wait until he retires to fill his coffers...like our President.

CRAIG CAN'T MAKE UP HIS MIND IF HE IS GAY OR HETEROSEXUAL OR RESIGNING OR NOT. IS IT ANY WONDER OUR COUNTRY IS IN THE MESS IT'S IN WITH INCOMPETENT, SELF-SERVING HYPOCRITES ARE WRITING THE RULES AND LAWS AND SPENDING OUR HARD EARNED MONEY!

He can't make up his mind about anything, and he can't dial a number correctly. Sounds to me like he's not sharp enough to be one of those in charge of our government! He said he'd leave, we should be certain he does.

Craig's arrogance bespeaks the need for term limits.

His "I can win this 'game'" attitude, is indeed the GOP's position on virtually everything . . . rather than showing any remorse or concern for the nation itself.

That Craig so readily shows no honor or integrity within his admitted guilt, suggests a total emotional disconnect that "We The People" cannot tolerate in our hired representatives. It's time WE culled this herd (with a vengeance).

Reminds me of when Newt was caught negotiating the terms of his own censure in a GOP conference call. Expect some Republicon prosecutor to go after the recipient of this errant phone message on some trunmped-up charge out of revenge, just like they did in 'Newtgate'.

Craig was clearly misleading the public once again in his "resignation" speech on Saturday. Here's the admission on tape. He also lied about the reasons for the Sept 30th deadline -- not to provide a transition for his staff, but to give himself time to try to clear his name.
He is delusional and a liar, so he's perfect for the Republican party. His whole life has been a lie but he can't see it. He doesn't even have the self respect to let this thing go after such public humiliation and embarrassment for his wife and family. And this is one of our long-standing US Senators.

This ongoing scandal and the bridge collapse make Minneapolis the perfect venue for the GOP convention. Can't you just see Jon Stewart reporting from the stall!

Republicans refer to the "Bridge to Nowhere" as code for "Were you circumcised?".

Ok... So now we know the REAL story. Craig's not gay, he's senile.

The actual problem is, he's one of about 80 in the Senate that are, and they're obviously not ALL Republicans.

Now that you mention that, NoCal, I've been wondering about Sen. Warner and his retirement. Is there something personal about him that's been hidden and that some reporter is about to reveal? These guys don't retire; they don't know how to "go gentle into that good night"

He's 80. And he may be feeling guilty about his role championing the Iraq invasion.

It must sound like "STOMP" has come to town when Larry goes to the john at Union Station. Here's another sad facet of this tragedy. Otter would likely appoint Jim Risch to replace Craig if he retires. Risch cant ever get elected on his own, but has been appointed to all kinds of political plum jobs, including Governor! Think political whore...Ratso from Midnight Cowboy..anything you want just so he can survive.
As an Idahoan, I lament the political attitude here. An R behind your name is all that is required and it's like a shield and a guarantee...nothing is too big a problem as long as that "R" is there to protect you. Argh
