Roll Call reports:

Sen. Larry Craig (R) opened the possibility of reversing his stated intention to resign from the Senate on Sept. 30 in a voice mail message obtained by Roll Call that the Idaho conservative inadvertently left at a wrong number.

Craig left the digitally recorded message on the recipient's mobile phone voice mail Saturday morning, about a half-hour before he announced his intention to resign his Senate seat at month's end. The message was provided to Roll Call by the phone's owner, who is a Washington, D.C., resident not involved in politics and is not the person the Senator was trying to reach. Craig discussed his forthcoming announcement more as a strategy to rehabilitate his political fortunes than a statement about his looming departure.

"Yes, Billy, this is Larry Craig calling. You can reach me on my cell. [Sen.] Arlen Specter [R-Pa.] is now willing to come out in my defense, arguing that it appears, by all that he knows, that I've been railroaded and all of that," Craig said on the voice mail. "Having all of that, we've reshaped my statement a little bit to say it is my 'intent' to resign on Sept. 30.

"I think it is very important for you to make as bold a statement as you are comfortable with this afternoon and I would hope you could make it in front of the cameras," Craig continued. "I think it would help drive the story that I am willing to fight, that I've got quality people out there fighting in my defense, and that this thing could take a new turn or a new shape; it has that potential."

Although it could not be determined who the Senator was trying to reach when he incorrectly dialed the phone number, Craig recently hired Washington, D.C., lawyer Billy Martin, who put out a statement Saturday in support of his new client.

Rumor has it that Specter offered his support of

Craig to emabarrass his GOP enemies and keep

the Craig issue in the press.

If true, it is working!

After reading this, I just have to shake my head. Poor Craig is a pathetic, befuddled man, desperately trying to hold on to his Senate seat.

This should be interesting. The last thing the GOP needs is continued coverage of this escapade. Could we be so lucky as to watch the GOP implode from within?

the epitome of politics right here...

politicians aren't concerned with what the facts or reality is...they are concerned with "driving the story"...ie the spin and what facade or illusion they want to create...

this also goes to show that politicians are very adept at planning the steps that their spin will take far into the future...

something that quite a few people(usually on the right) deny...they tend to be sheep and take everything the government says at face value...

I think that, for the sake of his asshole, they should let him go.

Craig is deluded, and this also proves what a lier he is. I noticed in his speech when he stressed the word "intend". What he really meant was that he didn't intend to resign.

I feel pity for him, that he has felt his whole that that he had to live a lie and hide his real feelings. He must be so used to being consumed with shame.

But pathetic as he is, he is still is a World Class Hypocrit, and by most accounts has done a poor job for his constituants.

Everything he does now, besides go away quietly, only hurts his conservative causes.

well, I guess I can live with that.

though I agree, I feel pity for him and his family.
It is sad.

But I do like that his conservative causes are now at risk!

It's been a full day and nobody in the GOP is speaking out against him.

It's what they're all about.

So when Craig made his statement that it was his "intent" to resign September 30, he was lying, and already had Specter on board. I'm very puzzled by Specter's defense of Craig, since most Republicans just want the whole thing to go away, and Craig's willingness to fight is going to keep him in the news. I'm guessing that Specter is already persona non grata with a lot of Republicans because of his rough treatment of Gonzales.

Specter, for all his faults, is a moderate republican. One PA republican told me that he wasn't conservative enough and in fact, the Right tried to get rid of him in the last election. I think the conservative republican who ran against him in the primaries was Toomey. Specter has been persona non grata with conservative republicans since he DIDN"T vote for Clinton to be impeached. He continues to win in Pennsylvania because of his moderate stance. I respect the fact that he stood up to Gonzales but at the same time, he talks a good talk about the war, but isn't willing to vote with the democrats to start troop withdraw.
As for Craig, he has a 2 fold problem. He may win the legal battle but the political battle is another story. Personally I think he should let it go. But, like an addict, I don't think he has yet been honest with himself so it is no wonder that he can't be honest with the police, his wife or his family. Questions that remain for me are 1) why did he plead guilt after almost 2 months from the day of the arrest? 2) Why didn't he seek legal counsel then? 3) How did he know the signals using in cruising? The peeking in the stall, the foot tapping, the hand movements can't all be just a fluke. 4) And, why would he or anyone being reaching down to pick up a piece of toilet paper off the floor in a public restroom? What was he going to do with it?
I could care less about his sexual activities, but I hope he is ready for the spotlight that will be upon him throughout all of this procedure while he tries to convince everyone of his innocent, especially after pleading guilty. Makes you wonder about the intelligence of the people we elect!

Moderate on what???

He talks a good game then votes withthe rest. Ask Nussle.

Anyone that voted for Nussle should be challenged in the primaries.

As for Specter being a moderate, let's not forget what he did to Anita Hill. That was absolutely fraudulent, evil, and vicious. That's who Specter is.
When push comes to shove, he does his Party's dirty work. Always.
When his Party can afford a stray vote, to look as though there are moderates in the Party, he's their actor. Gives the public the impression that the Party has some diversity. But it's phoney.

I don't think that's it. I think Specter is just their front man, he's on that committee so he has to say/do something. As he has done in so many situations in the past, he waxes eloquently indignant, reminds everybody that he was once a prosecutor, and then carries the administration's water when the time comes to vote. Specter is their drama queen, who hasn't departed in a vote yet from his party.

Specter has his religious beliefs and that's the way it is. There's nothing the GOP can do that offends him......ask Gonzales.

What stunning incompetance to call the wrong number and leave a message like this. I laughed out loud. When I heard Spector defend Craig I cheered because I knew that this was not gooing to leave the airwaves. I love how Spector talks about Craig "fighting this charge" when there is no chance that his guilty plea will be taken back. Someone wrote the plea agreement and it wasn't the prosecuting attorney, therefore Craig either had an attorney or he wrote it himself showing that he did think about it and consider the details. But, hey, go ahead and drag this thing out and keep that spotlight on your hypocricy.

This is the face of the Republican Party. Corrupt, degenerates who lie and are hypocritical about being gay.

This should keep the "Moral Majority" away from the polls, since a good old gay bashing always brought the right wing nuts out in droves!

Specter is a great one with the laws of our land. Refresh my memory, how long has he been trying to get anyone one from the white house to come down and testify. He's a long winded politician and not as dumb as the others. We never did hear anything more about one of his staffers who's hubby just happens to do a lot of contract work for the Government. Give us a break, if there's any honesty in Washington it sure knows how to hide.

Larry Craig is just like Mark Foley: the gift that keeps on giving. It is beyond hysterical that he left a voice mail message on the wrong machine. Didn't he listen to the outgoing message? What idiot leaves a voice mail containing sensitive information on a machine anyway knowing that the message can be broadcast to a larger audience? I know, the same idiot who picks up toilet paper from the floor of a public bathroom. Don't resign, Larry - keep fighting and stay as the number one story on cable news.

Wonder what he meant when he said he got his Red Wings in that bathroom?

If Craig says he was in there to forget about terrorism, that cop can be busted for not blowing him under the Patriot Act.

They really really really have to get this through their heads:
Let the issue "die its own death".
This is exactly like hanging on to AG Gonzales. The longer they leave these issue out for the world to comment on and, in Sen Craig's case. make him a laughingstock; the more "points" the Dems gain and the more "moral issue" folks they'll lose.
