What Democratic Sen. Barack Obama may lack in foreign-policy experience, he is trying to make up for in sheer numbers of advisers -- enough, says one of the team, for "his own virtual State Department."

Since launching his presidential bid in February, the freshman senator from Illinois has used the burgeoning brain trust -- now over 150 advisers and counting -- to help flesh out an almost wonkishly detailed set of statements, on the Iraq war, on Iran, U.S. counterterrorism strategy, the future of the U.S. military, even Cuba. Coming up next, his advisers say, will be more on China, U.S. energy security, the plight of Iraqi refugees, and how much to reduce the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

But the makeup of Mr. Obama's team -- heavy on onetime aides to President Clinton -- also speaks to an internecine feud between Mr. Obama and his chief rival for the Democratic nomination, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, over which of them represents the future of their party.

For crafting his counterinsurgency strategy, Mr. Obama has Harvard University's Sarah Sewall, who worked in the Pentagon under President Clinton. For overall security issues he leans on Mr. Clinton's former national security adviser, Anthony Lake. What about fighting AIDS or boosting U.S. trade in Africa? For that and more, he has former Clinton administration diplomat Susan Rice.

Too many advisers. He would need only me.

First I'd tell him to close all US military bases located outside the US borders.

Then you could begin to cut the fat off the military budget.

Obama can load up whatever and whoever, it doesn't diminish the fact that he's inexperienced in many affairs.

Hmmmm...I thought that Obama was the candidate for change...not that I dislike many of the Clintonites, but it seems odd to me that he is attacking Hillary as the status quo yet he hires all her husband's foreign policy advisers.

BTW: I don't think an Obama/Edwards tickets would be a winner, as some here think. Nice idea...just won't win.

Remember this:

They are bashing Hillary right into the Oval Office.

So Obama has a "burgeoning brain trust -- now over 150 advisers and counting -- to help flesh out an almost wonkishly detailed set of statements..."

Will he need a map to find the bathroom?

Why should additional credence be given to this article. It is just another hit job on the Clintons. Furthermore, most of these former Clinton supporters are just positioning themselves for a better job. Is this not the American way?

Obama, are you listening ? Clinton didn't have it right; ask James Woolsey, former cia director, who decried the clinton deprioritization of intelligence assets, gathering, analysis and intepretation by the clinton administration elimination of all experts across the entire government needed to do the appropriate proper job of runing and protecting this nation and its interests. Clinton had his day; his failures contributed to the first and second/final WTC bombings. PLEASE don't play ld tapes; by all means, learn from clinton administration mistakes, but don't do a george bush jr. replaying bush senior and ron reagan agendas ! Face the nation and the world as it is now and will be tomorrow; if you are as unaware as most all US politicians are, invite Gordon Brown, Tony Blair [two different perspectives on the same matters], Canada PM, EU heads of state to spend a week in seclusion with you disclosing their perspective of the world challenges and their respective nation's challenges .... your anthropology prof mother may be a great asset to helping you understand all of this, then to understand where the US is in respect to all these challenges and what startegic vision the US needs, then what tactical plan you need to employ to get the USA off the wrong path and out of the ditch its fallen into, and heading back to a path where other nations with democracy interests can work with, collaborate, cooperate and/or advise with the USA to address the globally changing world we live in and still preserve democracy, advance our own human rights and democracies.

No thanks Obama...I've had eight years of a "uniter." This time out, I'm opting for ruthlessness. If you're THAT motivated to be in the White House, you'll be THAT motivated to ensure your place in history is remembered well.
While not my first choice, if Gore doesn't run, it's Clinton all the way. To get Bill anywhere near the White House is the best chance this country has to get back on its feet.

How long have you been a Democrat?

Or maybe the correct question should be,

how many times did you vote for Bush?

THISTLE, I have spent the last couple of minutes reviewing your comments and can see where you have critisized every leading Democratic candidate and only agreed with one fellow poster, FIRAXIS!!!

Who are you for???

Obama is a political rock star but cannot carry the Democrats to victory a year from November. The way the rethugs attack and lie will take down this highly educated constitutional law professor who happens to be black and was once a Muslim.

People need to get to know and trust Obama. Behind Clinton, Obama would never be able to reach his potential as a great American President but behind the populist Edwards or Al Gore, Obama would prove to be unbeatable as he carried the banner of We the People, forward.

PLEASE ENOUGH OF THE "political rock star,"
OBAMA is a media manufactured candidate, a lightweight and empty suit. Read Maureen's
Dowd's column today in The New York Times.

Yes Maureen Dowd is so good, she misquoted so many things Gore said in the 2000 race. She's a columnist, not a reporter and she doesn't care how accurate what she says is.

Unfortunately, Obama cannot possibly retain even a fraction of the information he's getting from hundreds of foreign policy advisers. It's like trying to cram for a test you've never cracked a book for, and know nothing about the subject.

Rice now says she gave Bush intense foreign policy instruction in 2000. No one has admitted to instructing Bush on the Constitution. So between Condi and Bush's penchant to leave decisions to his "experts", we have a mess that will take a long time to make right.

It's hard not to like Obama, but he should have a long career ahead of him and I would personally like to see him get back to work in the Senate where he is badly needed. A little more real experience as a Senator will only benefit him and the nation in the future.

Excellent managers, which is what a President is, always avail themselves of the best advice from those who have experience in the situation which presents itself.

Second-rate managers don't avail themselves of the excellent specialists and rely on their "gut feelings" to make decisions.
Second-rate managers, so unsure of their own abilities hire third-rate yes-men/women to boost their egos and will not tolerate dissent.

Asking questions is the only way that one acquires knowledge in fields in which they are not expert.
There is no shame in not knowing everything.
Nobody knows everything.

I watched a very informative America at a Crossroads series on PBS last night.

It was about how the UK and most of Europe views Americans. I knew we were laughing stocks-I just didn't realize how bad. While most commented on the shallowness of Americans-some of the best advice from foreignres is that we need to get out of our own country and see it from a different perspective. The Brits have penned such operas as the "The Jerry Springer Opera" making fun of the culture of this country. They call us self-obsessed and selfish. The Europeans compare our relations with them as "the old marraige syndrome" of 2 people who've been married for a long time and discover they have nothing in common anymore-but hang on anyhow in trying to make it work.
The whole series was really very damming and eye-opening. It shows how badly this war and our culture has reduced our image on the world stage. I welcome the candidate who recognizes this-from someone who does have a different perspective from living abroad like Sen. Obama.

Why would foreigners have a negative view of America when every single reason to go to war was wrong, and knowing that, the American people don't seem to give a fuck ?

"It was about how the UK and most of Europe views Americans"

I'm sorry but I'm afraid that also includes non-European countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, the entire south American continent etc.
You don't have to go to Europe to see your country under a more realistic light, Canada and Mexico will do nicely...
Remember, it's not the people we hate, it's the SYSTEM.

He doesn't need 150 advisor's, I could save him a ton of dough with my free advice. I am an atheist, but the 10 commandments isn't a bad starting point, don't kill, don't covet other countries oil, don't lie your ass off.Don't do a toe tap in public bathrooms with a wide stance. I think I'm a little rusty with the other commandments.

Obama has more experience than Lincoln and Kennedy and more legislative experience than Hillary. None of the top three canidates have executive experience except Hillary and her health care debacle.
