I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Anti-war forces, angered over Congressional failure to bring an end to the Iraq war, are gearing up to run primary challenges against Democratic incumbents who support the Bush administration.

Frustration with the Democratic leadership of the House and Senate reached new heights with the appearance of stories describing Democrats' growing willingness to compromise on Iraq legislation, including "Democrats Retreat On War End" in The Politico and "Democrats Newly Willing to Compromise on Iraq" in the New York Times.

MoveOn, which spent a total of $28.1 million in the 2005-6 election cycle, sent out a survey to its 3.3 million members noting:

"Hundreds of thousands of us worked to get Democratic majorities elected. So why don't they have the votes? One reason is that there are a set of weak Democrats who side with the president--especially on Iraq. They're too scared to fight for what's right and what they were elected to fight for.

"This fall, we face a pivotal series of votes on Iraq--votes that, if we win, could spell the end of the Iraq war. MoveOn members have made phone calls. We've held town meetings. We've run ads and written letters to the editor. But now, given this big moment, we have an important decision to make together."

The email, signed by "Nita, Eli, Justin, Jennifer and the MoveOn.org Political Action Team," posed the following question:

"Should we support primary challengers against some Democrats?.... It's a tough question, and one we need everybody's input on." Members were given a link where they were asked not only whether they would support Democratic primary challengers, but whether they would be willing to give money to such a campaign, and how much

A House Democratic leadership aide told the Huffington Post, "We understand their frustration, but we need to elect more Democrats in order to affect real change on Iraq." Another top Democratic leadership aide said, "What in the world are they thinking? All this is going to do is increase the possibility of electing more Republicans. Instead of going after Democrats, they should be focusing their efforts on pressuring Republicans to break with the president.

In private, many in the House and Senate leadership contend that if more liberal candidates defeat incumbent conservative and centrist Democrats in primaries, many of them representing Southern and Midwestern constituencies, the chances of a Republican victory in the general election sharply increase.

The MoveOn survey comes on the heels of the anti-"Bush Dog" campaign on the Open Left website created by Chris Bowers, Matt Stoller and Mike Lux.

The "Bush Dogs" -- a play on the "Blue Dog" Democrats, a caucus of center-conservative Democrats -- is made up of the 39 House Democrats who voted on May 24 in favor of the Iraq emergency supplemental appropriation and on August 4 in favor of the "Protect America Act" expanding the administration's power to use warrantless wiretaps.

Stoller described the Bush Dogs as "Southern white dudes." He argued that "these members are not voting their districts, they are just conservatives....Bush Dog Democrats are dragging down the rest of the party. According to Zogby, 80% of Democrats disapprove of the job that Congress is doing."

Bowers suggested that Bush Dog Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) is an ideal candidate to target in a primary challenge.

Lipinski's district is overwhelmingly Democratic, with 59 percent support for John Kerry, "in absolutely no danger of falling into Republican hands;" Lipinski is "staunchly anti-choice;" and "he also is below average for a Democrat on immigration, gets a big fat zero from Progressive Punch on GLBT issues, and only a 50 percent score from the Drum Major Institute on progressive family issues. Basically, he sucks at just about everything."

An anti-war challenger strategy poses both risks and rewards.

Many members of Congress, including some adamantly opposed to the war, argue that primary challenges improve prospects for Republicans in the general election, and threaten defections from swing voters worried that liberal interest groups have excessive influence in the Democratic Party.

Conversely, proponents argue it could boost the energy and commitment of activists who helped produce the 2006 election successes; pressure Democratic incumbents to cast anti-war votes; and, in the long run, prove that a Democratic-led Congress can take on a Republican administration.

I'll be real surprised if there aren't more Republican challengers. Didn't Ron Paul get a good 35% instant poll rating after their last debate?
The primaries are so front loaded now, there will be plenty of time for third parties with big names to come together in 2008.
This primary challenge thing is a simple way to pressure those Democrats who are too fearful to do the right thing.

35% is impressive to me. So what if you can vote a million times.
Usually, the form of the question can determine the answer. I don't know how they phrased the 'preference' question. Ron Paul is too unique in that repug crowd to not get attention, though.
I bet Faux News doesn't make the same mistake again.

Who needs science when you are led by a ruthless god??? Logic and critical thought are unnecessary when you're a wingnut.

The reason for impeachment is to roll back the illegal and unconsitutional actions the pretender has committed - otherwise they will be the new bottom line for future presidents. Even if impeachment fails a strong message will be sent to future occupants.

I hope that move on and any American who values the Constitution and American Freedom will challenge the Dems who caved in to Bush and changed the FISA laws.
We know that the republicans don't support Freedom or the Constitution but the Dems shouldn't do as the republicans do.

This subject makes me very depressed. Fighting the repigs is easy, but the traitorous dems that wear the sheeps clothing fool a lot of voters.

last time I looked there are more than two parties in America.

Since I live in New Hampshire, for the first time I'll register as a Republican and vote for Ron Paul in the primary (the ONLY candidate with the BALLS to take on Bush without equivocations) and during the general election probably vote for a libertarian or a green party candidate.

You better win the election first before you start the purge. Comments like "Stoller described the Bush Dogs as "Southern white dudes" are just what aren't needed unless you don't mind them coming back with descriptions of MoveOn,ACLU,etc. as Northern Jew Dudes.

The Democratic Bush supporters need to be asked, why do you support/fund the Bush murders in Iraq and the erosion of individual rights at home? These are not fringe issues but questions of life and death, tyranny and democracy.

It's all a big show for us worker bees anyway,
at a certain point in these career politicians life (Democrats or Republicans) they make a choice, "to maintain my political career and to be able to reap the benefits from the real powers that be, aka "Global Corporate Power", I must represent the US High Brahmin".
Once in while they throw us saps an old bone or a crumb but they have to be careful not to upset the apple cart or to identify the "man behind the screen".
Due to pressures from other Corporate Global partners these "leaders" of ours must now share the wealth with others in the world and that means less material goods and services for us in the USA.
SO we get the old showbizz minstrel show with the Democrats and Republicans entertaining us all with the same old worn out bullshit of divide and conquer.
This upcoming election year will probably be decided on who's tougher on "illegal immigration" and the "war on terror" oh yeah !

I'm torn on this. On the one hand, I vehemently disagree with any internecine squabbling between dems at this time. 2008 is far too important for the wimng nut nader voters to screw the country over once again as tehy did in 2000. The one thing teh GOP had going for it from 96-06 that brought about their rise to power was the ability to always present a united front. The bottom line is that elections are not really "won" by the elected party, rather they are "lost" by dumb, self-destructive moves by teh losing party. This is just that type of self-destructive move. Bush didn't win in 2000, rather Nader and Bradley ensured that Gore lost.

That said, Lipinski is a waste of space and deserves to be challenged. He inherited his post from his father and, along with Stroeger Jr., he is the worst example of nepotism and privilege in the Chicagoland area. I'd be happy to see someone challenge him in the primaries.

Weren't you listening? This isn't about some useless 3rd party effort like Nader. This is about REPLACING DEMOCRATS WITH BETTER DEMOCRATS.

No. It isn't. Most of those "blue dog" democrats are in district where a more liberal dem would have zero chance of being elected. So, while this muddle-headed campaign may make the wing nuts on the fringe of our party feel pompous and self-important for a few months, the end result will be the same as (a) voting republican or (b) voting republican by proxy via a useless 3rd party candidate.
Replacing these conservative dems in most of their districts will result in only one thing; teh election of a republican. Because the necessary swing voters in these conservative districts aren't going to vote any more liberal than they did in 06.

It's EXACTLY the same type of muddle headed thinking that lead party-traitors to vote Bush-by-way-of-nader in 2000.

Are you guys missing the fact that it was 130 degrees in Iraq the past month. Do you think people who have lived in the desert would know when to fight and not to fight?
Watch and see the attacks return as the temps drop and they can move without passing out from heat exhaustion.
The test has been fixed is my view of the reports that we will hear.

Dems, remember why we elected you, or we will throw you out too. You aren't safe if your only qualification is that you are not a Republican. You must act like the polar opposite of a Republican.

Plan for 2008:

1. Throw bums out
2. Elect better bums
3. Repeat until troops are home and our democracy restored.

The BushDogs are quick learners. They see the Repugnant fear campaign and now they are in jeopardy, they try it for themselves. 'Run someone against us and you will just be supporting the Repuclicans'.
The American electorate should speak and eliminate the incredulous war mentality whether Repugnant or Dem!

I said the same thing.

I told them that unless they go after RAHM and REID and PELOSI, then forget. RAHM is the real power behind keeping democrats in the republican lite line.

The DLC is nothing more than a corporate controlled part of the democratic party and as such will not do anything against corporations which means telling voters to go fuck themselves when bill time comes around.

Name one bill that has EVER benefitted the middle class, the working class and the average American?

ALL the bills do is benefit corporations and protect their profits no matter what.

I will contribute to this, but only if they limit themselves to challenging conservative Democrats in districts where a more anti-war Democrat has a solid chance of winning and leaving more conservative Democrats in Red and weak Purple districts, where a more liberal Democrat cannot win, alone.
