The values-driven Oprah Winfrey, one of the most influential women in the United States by virtue of her wealth and moral authority, is an example of what Barack Obama's presidential campaign is trying to do: transform people who have not participated in presidential politics into believers jazzed up about being part of the process.

If Winfrey, who will host a fund-raiser for Obama on Saturday on the grounds of her Santa Barbara mansion, votes for Obama in the February Illinois Democratic primary, it will be the first time she cast a ballot in a presidential primary since at least 1988, according to her voting record on file with the Chicago Board of Elections.

I'm very disappointed that Winfrey refuses to have all the primary candidates on her show. It's a real disservice to her audience.

Oprah can't get her lard ass to the voting booth...Plus she is racist.

Self deprivating sycophants are responsible for her current egomaniac gluttony which has risen to the point where she thinks she can determin the president of this country.
I hope her race based love for the inexperienced polyana junior senator speaks as loud as all of her other race based preferences.

Lets not forget about her african all girls school where for very little maoney she can revere herself as the black mutha Theresa...

Why couldn't she help black or white girls in her own country?

Maybe Oprah thinks she can have two countries...
Do us all a favor Oprah. Take your show and your fat ass to Africa.

I wonder if anyone will have the nerve to publically mention this about the Great Oprah?

Why is this even a story? So the foul-mouthed haters of Oprah and Obama can spew their bile? None of the hate you spew here will take anything away from Oprah or her support for Senator Obama. Many of you would be singing praises if she endorsed HRC or Edwards or any White candidate. I have not seen all the book writers she has made millionaires by her endorsements complain about her race or moral authority. Deal with it, she plays in a different league. Obama too.

AT LAST... she is doing something important.

Since taking on the beef industry, all she has done are shows about women who are wearing the wrong size bra .

Glad to see her take a serious turn, finally.

I hope that her viewers refuse to be led by her-or by any celebrity. Why on earth should anyone want to decide on a candidate based on a celebrity endorsement? That's just dumb.

This isn't a book or a bra. This is important.

I have never particularly been an Oprah watcher. Her support of Obama is just that another media star supporting their candidate. So be it.

It was not long ago when some people were asking if "Obama was black enough". More and more the cadre of blacks surrounding Mr. Obama is growing larger and white faces are fewer. Obama should beware. Oprah may turn out to be a bigger disadvantage than an advantage to the Obama campaign. First, I'm not sure she doesn't have a personal agenda and sees backing Obama as a way to increase her personal power, prestige and influence, especially if he wins. The term "king maker" has been mentioned, that makes people think he will personally owe her once he's in office. Obama becoming surrounded by so many black people will begin to become "too black" and this will frighten and turn off a lot of white supporters.

This is still a very racially biased nation. Obama has traction because his skin isn't really that "black" and many whites can still identify with him because he doesn't really look and "talk" black. Of course, because of this, many blacks consider him an "Oreo", black on the outside but white on the inside. Obama has to juggle a lot of ethnic groups and to do this political juggling he must maintain a very fine balance, more so than other candidates. If Obama appears "too white" he may lose some black support. If Obama appears to "black" he will lose middle American white support. Progressive whites will continue to publicly support him, but the vast majority of white America will not. The decision will come down to do I vote for a white devil I know, or a black devil I don't?

Oprah's enthusiasm just might be the undoing of Mr. Obama. She's beginning to appear to be a black version of Tom Cruise jumping up on the couch. Obama should to be very careful he isn't eclipsed by Oprah's ego.

Obama being eclipsed by Oprah's ego is a real problem. When she takes on a project she makes sure it has the Oprah stamp all over it. She is far better known then Obama is and will eclipse him. Although she is not that much older than he is -- next to her he looks like a skinny kid. So she would look like Obama's mama, not a powerful image for this candidate.

Illinois is not the easiest state in the Union in which to vote. The state was sued by the feds in 1995 because it failed to comply with federal voting requirements.

The State basically blew the feds off, as did California and Pennsylvania. From personal experience, I can say that Pennsylvania and Illinois are primitive at best.

I take issue with the author's emphasis on Oprah's primary voting record. Perhaps she considers herself an independent, progressive, or something else. Once upon a time one had to declare a party to vote in the primaries. A lot of people refused to declare party allegiance, even if they considered themselves a Democrat or Republican.

I have not been able to find current Illinois requirements for primary voting, but historically the state has ugly politics. I wouldn't think it unusual for Oprah or anyone else to skip Illinois Primaries.

We still have to declare in the primaries.

Sad but true!

If you ever voted in Chicago or Illinois then you'd know your voting record is VERY PUBLIC to the extent the Shackman law was passed to protect potential and existing employees from being canned based on their partisan affiliation as it pertains to government positions. But the 2nd City, blows a cold hard wind when it comes to having one's voting record released to the public. If voting and the release of your political affiliation endangered your economic aspirations how many would put that on the line in light of less than 30% of Americans actually vote in every election inclusive of primaries.
Don't cast stones if your house is glass, or a cave:p
Chris Matthews only after the 2004 election was a done deal did he actually expose his political party leanings as he spoke of his brother running for office to the point his personal politics affects his objectivity on the show. Take a score card because I blogged this in 2004 with citations. Ethically it would have been great if he warned us he was deftly using Lund a GOP honed wordsmith as his pollster who devised carefully crafted questions that forced one to either support Bush's policies or be non patriotic. Why? Because Hardball is a political show where no sides are to be taken. He was dishonest with his viewers when he failed to disclose Lund's expertise as a disclaimer prior to each poll. I really lost respect for him despite a truly inspirational graduation speech he made at Loyola in Md only to turn around allowing Lund to use his show to promote Bush policies. That was selling out. Oprah has a day variety talk show.

Oprah has this going for her as donor and celebrity backer of Obama:

She is not an international fugitive; she is not under investigation for fraud or money laundering; and she is an American citizen who can vote.

Unlike Clinton donors.
