Exploring the neurobiology of politics, scientists have found that liberals tolerate ambiguity and conflict better than conservatives because of how their brains work.

Scientists at New York University and UCLA showed through a simple experiment to be reported Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience that political orientation is related to differences in how the brain processes information.

From my experience, most conservatives have learned to control their thoughts and analyze issues in a very controlled manner. This is why libs are accused of being emotional and conservatives are accused on having very little emotion.

Emotion does play a part but I think it's the level of thought process control that really determines your level of liberalism...

I also believe this is why most people start out as liberal and end up conservative...they become more experienced and learn to process information in the proper manner....

As a result, we should not hammer liberals to hard, just direct them back onto the right track from time to time…they are in a process of learning….and most successfully make it through…

However, we do end up with some that that don't...they get stuck at a certain point and never complete the entire process…hence, H. Dean, Kennedy…etc…it's where the old libs come from.

So it's probably incorrect to say liberalism is a mental disorder, probably more correct to say it's a learning disorder…

"From my experience...."

What experience might you be referring to booboo? Talking to a few of your buds in Levittown or Esquire Hills Trailer Park?

No...My job requires me to deal with all types of individuals, both lib and conservative...and even in my own political and social progression; just an observation....

So is the Iraq war is an example of sound conservative controlled thinking? Your arrogance and closed minded foolishness made me laugh out loud!

If mankind adhered to your view, we would still be trying to chase down animals with sharpened sticks.

This study illustrates what is both right and wrong about the Democratic party. Liberals realize that very few issues are black and white, and therefore many diverse opinions are tolerated, which can sometimes be perceived as disorganization. Republicans generally are in lockstep about most issues, and so they appear united and organized. Will Rogers said, "I don't belong to any organized political party. I'm a Democrat." So am I.

Somehow, studies like these unsettle me. Testing differences among populations, i.e according to race, culture, and religion would open a Pandora's Box.

Well, surely they will come up with a drug to cure the conservatives.

Somehow I think the Dems are ambiguous about the Iraq War. They keep funding it, forgot about impeachment...

Keeping an open mind, not seeing everything as a "black and white" issue is not being ambiguous ("lacking clearness or definiteness").

Don't we need leaders who are unambiguous and make intelligent decisions?

The irony is that Liberals come to sites like this and Kos so they won't be exposed to conflict or ambiguity.

Nah. Fact is, Liberals avoid sites like Drudge and Free Republic because they don't want to be exposed to single-minded blind incompetence.

As long as America can keep that brain malady contained within the lower 1/3 of the population, we should be able to wipe the epidemic out entirely by the next generation.

Overly broad and simplistic statements like yours – “The irony is that Liberals come to sites like this and Kos so they won't be exposed to conflict or ambiguity.” – do nothing more than reflect the “conservative” mind. Everything is an either/or, black or white – i.e. (All) Liberals won’t expose themselves to conflict or ambiguity. Really? Did you read the article?

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I doubt I’m alone. I actually read and listen to a lot of right-leaning jibberish, if for no other reason than to see how the other side is constructing their arguments. Checking out Fred Barnes, the Kagans, Michael Ledeen, Bill Bennett, Jonah Goldberg, Rich Lowery, Charles Krauthammer, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc, may cause head aches, dry mouth, oily discharge and erections lasting more than 4 hours, but it also helps to explain how certain topics are framed.

Sure, hyde.

That's why wingnuts like yourself can post endless conflicted and ambiguous BS on liberal comment threads, like here, and rational argument from liberals is removed and the posters banned on most conservative sites.

As I understand it, the most challenging part of the study was finding conservative brains. They had to catch hundreds of conservatives to find a single fuctioning brain.

The scientists also wanted to study the brains of those 25 percenters. However, they couldn't find a single fuctioning brain in that group.

This can’t be called an epiphany because the findings are too tightly coupled with common sense. For those familiar with the Meyers-Briggs personality test, this is the old “J” vs. “P” thing. J’s are judgers, while P’s are perceivers. In my circle of friends (about evenly split between conservatives and liberals), the J/conservative – P/liberal connection has been obvious to me for years. An interesting follow-up would be determining which group is more inclined to fall into cognitive dissonance. My guess is the conservative mind wins (or loses) this category (Iraq…hello?), but it’s not like they have sole ownership on compartmentalized thinking.

"Liberals had more brain activity and made fewer mistakes than conservatives when they saw W"

Well. That may explain why there's still a loyal (yet shrinking) minority who think GWB is the Emporer of the Moon.

Hmm.

Regardless of the study, empirical evidence shows that all conflicts and ambiguities are resolved by Liberals, in the end, AGAINST their country and FOR a need to be loved by their enemies.

Yeah, and Liberals really have that hate-thing nailed.

So, ever hear of a bell curve? Most fall in the middle..the operative word here is moderate.

Maybe Moderates see the need for some things to stay the same and for other things to change?

Truly fascinating stuff,

is there no limit to the lengths nutty, left-wing professors will go to in an attempt to rationalize, justify and/or defend the mental illness rampant within the liberal ideology?

Does there always have to be some radical gene or misfiring neuron to explain why you hufftards are such a bunch of fucked-up, self-loathing, fat, lazy, gay, poor, stupid, distracted, depressed, hopeless, angry, envious, confused, amoral, psychopathic miscreants?

Or is it just as simple as, momma or dadda didn't hug you enough?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

In the meantime, here is a freebe.

Conservatives generally accomplish more and are more sucessful because conservatives do.

Liberals generally accomplish less and are less successful, because liberals talk about what others do.

This seems to be mostly truth. Most conservatives (extreme right wingers) HAVE NOT used their brains in decades.
