Poll: Most want Iraq pullout deadline
WASHINGTON -- On the eve of critical testimony to Congress by Gen. David Petraeus, most Americans are skeptical of what he will say and support setting a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq regardless of the military situation there.

A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday and Saturday finds that a White House push to spotlight progress in Iraq, including President Bush's surprise stop in Anbar province last week, hasn't fundamentally changed attitudes toward the war.

Poll: Iraqis Say US Troops Not Helping

WASHINGTON -- Overwhelming numbers of Iraqis say the U.S. troop buildup has worsened security and the prospects for economic and political progress in their country, according to a poll released Monday that provides a strikingly bleak appraisal of the war.

Forty-seven percent want American forces and their coalition allies to leave the country immediately, the survey showed, 12 percent more than said so in a March poll as the troop increase was beginning. And 57 percent _ including nearly all Sunnis and half of Shiites _ said they consider attacks on coalition forces acceptable, a slight increase over the past half year.

Dems Take On Petraeus, Call For Firm Withdrawal Date

Democratic presidential hopefuls faced questions on Iraq at a debate hosted by Spanish language network Univision sunday.

A partial transcript of the exchange follows:

MODERATOR: Unfortunately, the question is for Senator Edwards. Senator Edwards, if General Petraeus has indicated that there was some success of these troops, would you still be in favor of withdrawing [from] Iraq in a few months?

MR. EDWARDS: I'm absolutely in favor of America leaving Iraq. What I'm concerned about, about the Petraeus report, is that it will be basically a sales job by the White House, that it'll be a PR document -- (applause) -- because that's what we've continually gotten from this administration, throughout the course of the war.

As Juan Williams stated on Fox News Sunday, he realizes there will be around 100,000 U.S. troops still in Iraq at the start of any new administration. He is sure this will be the reality.

Withdrawal will happen when we have stabilized the country and government, not before. Since this is a relative term, it'll have to be defined by politicians, LATER.

Also, there is news that WE are planning to build a base 4 miles from IRAN to stem the flow of arms and possibly, fighters, from that country. This base is anticipated to be there for the next 2 years, at least.

A base 4 miles inside of Iran ?
What a great idea, and of course you Libs will have nothing but bad things to say about it.

Even better, once we start handing out Coca Cola to the locals, and Get WalMart to supply some Ipods, the Iranians will soon be addicted to our culture and all the great things our great gift of freedom will give them.
Your days will be numbered, Mullahs !!

Iraq cannot be stabilized by the United States.

ONLY the Iraqis can stabilize their own country---and they have shown no desire or willingness to do so.
They are far more invested in ethnic cleansing and sectarian violence.

Why should Americans die for this?

It has nothing to do with US security concerns---and it never did.

Why should Americans die for this?

Agreed Bread. Furthermore, if Iraq is 'the cradle of civilization, how's come they don't already have their collective shit together? I mean they've only had since the so called 'beginning' of mankind to do it. Also, is this what's in store for us? Looks like a bad ending for us all.

The Decider is not driven by polls because he knows that most people are cut-and-run cowards. That's not the Decider. He's from the brave Bush family. You don't hear them calling for withdrawal. Of course, not a single one of them has been willing to serve since World War II. But that doesn't matter. They are Republican Royalty.

But until The Decider wants to withdraw, nothing will happen. Who will have the courage to say "enough is enough" and promote a civil uprising? Nothing else will work because IF the Democrats get a plan to withdraw troops, defund the war or impose a timetable passed, Bush will veto it. There are not enough votes to over ride his veto.

We are trapped. Until Bush is gone, there will be no exit from this deathtrap of his creation. Even after his departure, who will want to preside over America's defeat in Iraq? And that's precisely how the Republicans will label it. It may be Bush's War, but it will be declared by the Republican noise machine as the Democrat's defeat.

If congress would stop worrying about looking like they don't support the troops, and looking to be soft on terror, they would submit a bill with definate timetables. If baby bush vetoes it, submit the same bill over and over, until he has no choice but to sign it. Democrats.......... stop funding this illegal and immoral war.

John Edwards is claiming that General David Patraeus will lie for President Bush.

However, John Edwards cannot explain why his fellow democrats, holding the majority in the United States Senate, unanimously voted to confirm the General when he was presented for appointment by President Bush.

Today, you will witness democrats trashing General David Patraeus. It will be quite the spectacle.

However, I wonder how many of those democrats trashing General David Patraeus will explain why they voted to confirm the General?

God bless our troops.

Being accountable and taking responsibility is a problem the Republicans haven't quite solved yet. When confronted by their mistakes or errors of judgment, they inevitably regress and, in the process, often seem to regurgitate images of Bill Clinton.

Republicans, who have claimed to be the "grown-ups", are anything but. They are the petulant little spoiled brats who refuse to learn from the examples that life has to give and, instead, opt to stammer and scream and point the finger elsewhere.

I hope that the American people have learned a valuable lesson here -- that Republicans can not be trusted to do a fair and effective job at governing.

I am sure John Edwards will be proved correct when he says betrayus will lie for bush . . . as to why the Dems have no backbone . . . well . . . I don't think since Edwards is no longer in Congress to ask him why . . he must have his own view on the subject but that would be a diversion and not really helpful at this point -- the important thing right now is to get the troops out . . . to help rebuild Iraq somehow . . . and no more bushie/cheney wars . . . and to leave Iran alone . . .

AL QAEDA MATH = CIVIL WAR --- AL QAEDA'S NUMBERS ARE ONLY 3% TO 5% OF THE TOTAL SUNNI INSURGENCY!

Since Bush has repeatedly claimed we’re in Iraq to fight "Al Qaeda", the terrorists responsible for 9/11, why do we need 160,000 American soldiers to thwart a fighting force estimated to be no more than 3,000 at best?

Is "Al Qaeda's" fighting force of no more than 3000 so much better organized, armed and equipped that they've been able to successfully fend off 160,000 American soldiers after 4.5 years?

Is "Al Qaeda's" fighting force of no more than 3000 solely responsible for the nearly 4000 “American” deaths thus far?

How many “Americans” were killed by “Sunnis” or “Shiites” or “Kurds”? How many “Al Qaeda” fighters have been killed by “American” troops or by “Sunnis” or “Shiites” or “Kurds”?

Do dead “Al Qaeda” fighters immediately return to life to form an inexhaustible number of living dead fighters for “Americans”, “Sunnis”, “Shiites” and “Kurds” to kill again and again?

Are “Al Qaeda” fighters solely responsible for the killing of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians?

“Al Qaeda” isn’t the reason for the killing, destruction and chaos in Iraq. “George W. Bush” is! His dishonest motives, his incompetent planning, his irresponsible cronyism, his arming of sectarian, political and criminal factions, his enabling of ethnic cleansing and civil war, his ignorance, arrogance and immorality have resulted in a level of destruction and death that he is soley responsible for. Everything he has done in Iraq has been based on lies for reasons of political expediency. Intentionally or not, he is a mass-murderer.

George W. Bush is relying on the same math in Iraq that Karl Rove used when he guaranteed Republicans would hold their majorities in the House and Senate before the 2006 elections?

"[I]t is estimated that foreigners make up at least 70 percent of al Qaeda's 1,000 to several thousand fighters. Other estimates suggest al Qaeda's numbers around 850, about 3 to 5 percent of the Sunni insurgency."

100% correct. This has been a complete campaign of lies and obfuscation repeated so many times that the Fox News set actually believes it. You can consider "al Qaeda in Iraq" along with
"The whole world thought Saddam had WMDs" and
"I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees" and
"We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud" and
"I think they're in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency" etc, etc, etc.

While this has been noted, it seems to be eclipsed by right wing screaming... The Saudis' most loyal ally, the Bush family, has not raised one question regarding the 15 Saudis who perpetrated the attack on 9/11.

If one scintilla of evidence pointed toward Saddam, there must be reams of evidence that point toward the Saudi royal family.
