Poll: Most want Iraq pullout deadline
WASHINGTON -- On the eve of critical testimony to Congress by Gen. David Petraeus, most Americans are skeptical of what he will say and support setting a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq regardless of the military situation there.

A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday and Saturday finds that a White House push to spotlight progress in Iraq, including President Bush's surprise stop in Anbar province last week, hasn't fundamentally changed attitudes toward the war.

Poll: Iraqis Say US Troops Not Helping

WASHINGTON -- Overwhelming numbers of Iraqis say the U.S. troop buildup has worsened security and the prospects for economic and political progress in their country, according to a poll released Monday that provides a strikingly bleak appraisal of the war.

Forty-seven percent want American forces and their coalition allies to leave the country immediately, the survey showed, 12 percent more than said so in a March poll as the troop increase was beginning. And 57 percent _ including nearly all Sunnis and half of Shiites _ said they consider attacks on coalition forces acceptable, a slight increase over the past half year.

Dems Take On Petraeus, Call For Firm Withdrawal Date

Democratic presidential hopefuls faced questions on Iraq at a debate hosted by Spanish language network Univision sunday.

A partial transcript of the exchange follows:

MODERATOR: Unfortunately, the question is for Senator Edwards. Senator Edwards, if General Petraeus has indicated that there was some success of these troops, would you still be in favor of withdrawing [from] Iraq in a few months?

MR. EDWARDS: I'm absolutely in favor of America leaving Iraq. What I'm concerned about, about the Petraeus report, is that it will be basically a sales job by the White House, that it'll be a PR document -- (applause) -- because that's what we've continually gotten from this administration, throughout the course of the war.

You know what I say about those who go against the majority of Americans, don't you?

I say those traitors are anti-American and must not be tolerated.

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced his God, Which always comes to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ? To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint

I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep..
Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here.
They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod
As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell."

Again, assuming there is a God. What if God is not happy that US soldiers are doing the bidding of a tyrant, murderous thug? Is Saddam's army to be less forgiven for their sins against their own people than our US soldiers are?

Just playing devil's advocate, no pun intended.

That's so funny it's sad.

Red meat for the Bush Base, on the Right Wing Network.

I thought conservatives renounced the "appeal exclusively to the spit-flecked base" strategy?

Nope. They lied.

It appears the It appears the anti war groups are threatening the democrats with no election funding because of their confirmation vote of General David Patraeus.

Bwahahahahahaha!

And it appears that those "anti war groups" exist only in the mind of Linadamart60.

Misreported.

Should have said: "Majority of liberals think attacks on US troops acceptable."

Don't be afraid of who you really are.

How are liberals attacking US troops?

In Iraq? That doesn't sound right.

Oh, you meant "attack" in a theoretical, rhetorical way.

The same way you mean "sacrifice". Got it.

Its a virtual world.

If a repug 'supports the troops by keeping them in the danger zone' that in itself is a sacrifice.

If a liberal 'supports the troops by wanting them removed from the line of fire' that in itself is treason.

I do hope this clears the matter up for good.

Oh goody. Today General Petreasonous who btw wrote the book on counter insurgency AND is resposible for training Iraqi troops to stand up so we can stand down is giving a report today. I wonder if the questioners will ask him how many Iraqi military have died in combat against their own people. And why no Iraqis are seen fighting shoulder to shoulder with american troops in any video we've all seen.

Won't happen. The repugs and dems are going to give us pure theater. Much like Joe (we need to support the troops there in a clusterfuck instead of bringing them safely home from a failed endeavor) Biden did yesterday.

Disgusting.

God Bless Our Troops. Why don't you libs support our troops by enlisting and help fight the global war on terrorism going on in Iraq?

Young College Republicans all across this country are supporting our troops by getting educated, and assuring those troops that do make it back, a better, and more prosperous, America.

Republicans do not care about our troops. They only want more of them to die.

Stop the killing, now.

We are Dying to Hear that Report

For the past several weeks, the entire nation has been subjected to unbearable suspense resulting from the Truth and Consequences Game being played by the Administration, the various Senate factions and our loyal Armed Forces. In the process, the media has reported considerable increases in readership, viewership and revenues from advertising of programs hosted by strident and slightly flat-linered talking heads.
The debates have not helped. Matters still remain as confusing and worrisome as they were months ago with Iraq being the main dish.
So, we are coming to the end of the farce. In a few hours there will be appearances by distinguished generals, admirals, Secretaries of this and that and ultimately, the wise dictums of our beloved president.
But let me allow you to witness how this great dramatic production looks as seen with a bit of second guessing technology.

PRESIDENT: “What say General? What about Iraq?”
PETRAEUS : “Interesting question. What say General Pace?’
GENERAL PACE : Yes. How about it Admiral Fallon?”
ADMIRAL FALLON : Let us hear from you General Casey”
GENERAL CASEY : You were saying Secretary Gates?”
SECRETARY GATES : Ready Miss Perkins?’
MISS PERKINS : Colonel Nash, we are listening”
COL NASH : Captain Zellner, we await your words”
CAPT. ZELLNER : Sergeant Cerbone, ready for you”
CAPT. CERBONE : Sergeant York, please tell us”
SGT. YORK : Corporal Ferguson, your turn!”
CORPORAL FERGUSON : (yelling) “Hey! Manolo, the summary of the presentation, chop, chop!”
He dicho!”
