Meredith Vieira had just finished taking three weeks off, enough time to reset her body clock to normal after nearly a year of rising before dawn for the "Today" program. But by 10 p.m. on Labor Day, the night before she was due back at work, she was beginning to panic.

Having tossed and turned since she went to bed at 8:15 -- and with a car due to pick her up at her Westchester County home in a little over five hours -- she did something she said she had never done before: She downed a large dose of NyQuil, the better to put her to sleep.

I'm happy for Meredith, Star, and will be happy for Rosie if ever she gets another show. Anyone having to work with that God-awful Barbara Walters should be able to succeed at anything they do.

Meredith is a bright and intelligent woman. I remember when she was on "60 Minutes," when she was a young woman. She has always been this way. She would succeed in whatever she did. If she cannot cut the hours, she can quit and do something else. Fortunately for her, she doesn't have to keep this gig! Katie can go back to Today and take her place, for she is not so fortunate.
