2007-09-11-ColbertCastthedenouement.BMPLast night — at long last — Stephen Colbert brought the seemingly endless saga of WristGate to an end, tying together all open threads into one magical unbroken circle of love, like a cleanly-knitted bone. With the help of an all-star cast (har, cast, get it?), including usual suspects Brian Williams and Katie Couric, plus Nancy Pelosi, Tony Snow and Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly (poor Tim Russert didn't make the cut, we guess). Colbert shared the news (already reported on ETP) that his all-star signed cast had sold for $17,200 on eBay — with proceeds to the Yellow Ribbon Fund (which benefits people like these). Colbert seemed to have had as much luck getting the word on cast-winner John CD Miller, sender of cryptic emails. We had pledged to bring you his story, so here is what we were able to divine from one of the most recalcitrant subjects we've ever come across: He's "29 and single" (that he mentioned off the bat), and, after more cryptic emails, he directed me to his eBay page, which reads, in part: "With a single stroke of a pen, some public figures could be contributing to human endeavors. Some do. When that is not enough, care for someone who does." We think that means that Miller is a fan of Colbert's WristStrong agenda. Miller clarified somewhat by email, saying that donating money "presented me a unique opportunity to do some social discovery," in terms of awareness-building for causes in which he believes. Miller directed my attention to two things: Time'd recent cover story on "The Case For National Service," and this really effective ALS commercial. He also told me that he was "nobody special." His agenda, to the extent it is decipherable, seems to prove otherwise — but until we have more information on him, Colbert's depiction of him as a cross between "Captain America, Robin Hood and Jesus" will have to do.

2007-09-11-cap1461.bmpOkay! So on with the show, which we've embedded below for your WristStrong™ viewing pleasure. Some big news coming from this broadcast though: Katie Couric DID wear the bracelet on camera — at least on the camera that shot the Colbert footage. We also confirmed from a source close to the Colbert-O'Reilly exchange O'Reilly did NOT wear the bracelet on camera, fearing that the red might be misinterpreted as a communist symbol. (NB: Fellow Foxie Neil Cavuto wears a red band for MS awareness.) By now you've surely watched the clip, so you know that it was chock-full of other news, as attested by this slew of possible headlines:

Katie Couric: Charlie Gibson Is "A Very Nice Guy"

Brian Williams: Colbert, You're All Right...For Cable

O'Reilly: Sorry 'Bout The Wrist, You Puny Girly-Man

Nancy Pelosi: Is That Thing On?

But here's my favorite exchange, hands down:
Colbert: I've already Katie Couric's signature, and Brian Williams, and I need your signature to make it fair and balanced.

O'Reilly: Can I sign over them?

Colbert: Why don't you sign near Nancy Pelosi and she'll feel your icy fingers around her heart.

O'Reilly: All right, I'll sign this cast... (signing) Now, where is this cast going after I sign it?

Colbert: We are going to sell this cast on eBay after it gets cut off my arm and we are going to give all the money to charity!

O'Reilly: Good. What charity is that?

Colbert: We're going to give it to Daily Kos. Is that cool with you?

O'Reilly: That's fine with me!

God, it's really a shame that the REAL NEWS is being diluted with this crap. Okay, go watch. WristStrong is dead! Long live WristStrong!

I burst out laughing several times watching this. Colbert is one sharp, witty guy and the barbs he threw around ...at everyone were priceless.

Once the networks decided that news programs were not part of their public duty but just another "show" the news ended. It's all infotainment. In this environment we should not be surprised that young people prefer to get the "news" from brilliant performers like Colbert and Stewart. Stewart does something that none of the "real" news shows do. He plays tapes of the contradictory
statements that Bush E Newman and that pathetic face shooting gangster Chaney have shoveled out.

"the news ended"

YES that is when I cancelled my TV service.
Now I rely on the internet, but the phone company is about to ruin that too.

Its a shame that the supposedly real new is so pathetic, manipulated and unreal.

And when its is plainly pointed out, we have to laugh at its lies and incompetence.

"we have to laugh at its lies and incompetence."

It isn't even funny anymore.

I love Colbert! He and Jon Stewart make me laugh by poking fun at the ridiculousness of the MSM's reporting of the news. It is sad that four nights a week after all the "spin" of the day about the events happening in Washington and elsewhere, it takes these two absolutely entertaining "characters" on the Comedy Channel to make it "real."
The "wrist" gig was brilliant! I know no one else who could have gotten as much air time and blog space over a broken wrist. And, then to have the entire gig topped off by raising money for charity.....Kudos to Stephen and the generosity of John CD Miller!
Besides, Stephen Colbert has the best looking head of hair for any guy over 40 that I know. Is it real? Is it Grecian formula-ed? Love to run my fingers through.....wife permitting, of course!
If you don't think these guys are witty, you just don't get it! Must be a conservative, regardless of how you vote.

Stephen's hair is not real, or any other part.

But I must admit that I found his hair attractive, especially since Ron Reagan showed him how to comb it like his dad's.

Why the hell not. Its about as newsworthy as most of the crap they report anyway. Brittany, Paris Hilton, Bush pretending to reduce troops when all he is doing is bringing things back to where they were.

I suspect the buyer is a risk-taker who thinks he can unload it down the line, with a lot of help from the usual clueless media, for a lot more then he payed for it...

I suspect he will be able to profit from it too, although, as irritating as Colbert's O'Reilly routines can get (he fits his arrogant self-loving personality a bit too well), he still is one of the jester truth-tellers of our era-so maybe that makes it valuable.

It took Colbert to lure Ms. Pelosi from her lair, where she sips margaritas all day and takes phone calls from from Joe Lieberman. At least that is what I imagine her doing in the two plus months that she has been AWOL. Of course, it doesn't matter what she does in there, since she accomplishes nothing.

Always a 'Tip-o'-the-Hat' for you here, Mr. C, you're the BEST 'meta-you' there is with this fan. You and Jon bring laughs to my life every show, and I appreciate that you both seem to take this responsibility 'to me' seriously. haha

But, ...Mr. C, ....doin' the Flag on national TV...???
Whoa, Betsey Ross has GOT to be turning over, man!

Katie Couric, Brian Williams, Bill O'Reilly..real news? O'Really?
Tony Snow sure delivers real news every day with his Snow-jobs, doesn't he?
Nancy Pelosi, diluting the real news?..Deluding is more like it!
I'll take my "real news" where it is real..Jim Lehrer's Newshour, Bill Moyer's Journal, even..yes, blogs (gasp!) such as HuffPo, where I can interact or at least voice my opinions and discontent.
The Colbert Report, crap?..c'mon, can't you make a leap and laugh a little?

You have to admit that even though Pelosi won't do the show, most DC pundits and politicians drop in for the Stevieness. What's she afraid of? What?..a little laughter might make her seem less serious, less the beacon of leaderliness? I think not! She's done a pretty good job of that without Colbert.
Besides, if there's anything "Blahshington" DC could use, it's a good laugh with all of the phony jokers in residence!
And, don't I seem to remember our HuffPo leader taking a comedic poke, calling out Steve on his wristiness, with her ankliness? I can't think of anyone more devoted to "real news" than Arianna!

Can't we lose the santimoniness and laugh a little from time to time? On this day of all days, I could use a laugh and smile or two or three! Not to mention that the good cause at the bottom of this crap raised $$$ for the "Yellow-Ribbon Campaign!"

Any show that can bring about exchanges, such as this one between Jane Fonda and Steve Colbert is worthy of my time spent diluting the crap coming out of Washington...
Jane: "~We cannot elect men to office who are afraid of premature evacuation"..haha!
Pretty funny, as well was..
Steve: "~something, something..we had a bit of a freaky 3-way with Gloria Steinem, didn't we?..something not many other people can boast about!"
Indeed..you just have to love it, eh?..and oh, yes, you just have to laugh;}

Great post and I definately agree with you with one exception.

I try to get my news from C-Span as much as possible. Nothing better than the real deal with no one telling me what I should be thinking about it.

Yes, it is.

Which begs the question of why you're doing it.
