A powerful earthquake hit Indonesia on Wednesday, causing buildings to sway in at least four countries, and authorities issued a tsunami warning for much of the Indian Ocean region.

The undersea quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 and hit at about 6:10 p.m. (7:10 a.m. EDT), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was centered 65 miles southwest of Bengkulu, on Sumatra island, at a depth of 9.7 miles, the USGS said.

clearly bush putting his ole buddies in the indonesian eartquake regulation committe caused this to happen. also one cannot rule out that global warming caused specifically by US capitalism is to blame too. the debate is over.

The hole in the ozone layer, which caused the global cooling which resulted in global warming, is to blame.
Meanwhile there have been 0 earthquakes in Nebraska so far this year and that too is a result of global warming.

Earthquakes have been happening for thousands
of years way before the hole in our ozone layer.

Here's the solution--Napoleon Bonehead should send 130,000 US troops, uncounted contractors, and scads of right-wing bureaucrats to Indonesia to teach them democracy and rebuild the infrastructure. In no time at all--Mission Accomplished!!!!!

well maybe not fully accomplished but it would be a great start and maybe we could call it a Surge. And then Hillary and Dick(the gitmo nazi hunter) would agree it is working. And kerry would agree to fund it before he decided not to. Be sure to make sure Haliburton goes along as we all know they get all our money and if there are any legal problems we have the supreme court to shred the constitution for them

Hilarious!

Just another "Production" in Hollywood. Something made by man.

It is Bush's fault. If he had saved NO from Katrina this would not have happened.

Well, I guess the (figurative) ambulance chasers who think they "need Jesus" will descend upon them again.

There is nothing funny about earthquakes I can
assure you.
These constant shifting in the plates in Asia
is of great concern to people living here.
In Japan too we are nearing a point to rival
the great earthquake that almost destroyed
Tokyo in 1923.
Anyone of the frequent earthquakes here
could be "the big one".
We live in constant fear.

You're absolutely right Purple Girl.

Plate Tectonics is a known science and the Earth is constantly moving. Earthquakes in our region, Mexico, Central and South America, are all connected.

I was in the Northridge Earthquake in '94 (?) but I was in San Diego. I told a friend that afternoon that I wanted to feel an earthquake and around 4:30am the next morning, my bed was shaking like the Exorcist and I couldn't stand up. I packed my bags and came home and I never want to feel one again.

Between earthquakes, fires, traffic, Santa Ana winds, and Hollywood, I just don't understand the obsession with Cali.

Santa Monica, great art/music scene, interesting people and most importantly not many small town hicks nut-jobs like you.

It's because of Clinton's blowjob.

Can't you fools move on from Billy's blowjobs? You're the only ones that ever bring it up.

This IS a tragedy, and I'm surprised by the flippant comments on this thread.

Mother Earth is purging and I'm certain we will see many more significant disasters in our lifetime. Between that and our man-made wars, I'm afraid we are doomed.

Apparently, you hadn't noticed but "flip" is the modus operandi on this blog, but as you so colourfully allude ("Mother Earth is purging....")
populations and sub-populations have increased such that more and more of them live "on the edge." There are fewer degrees of freedom and margins of error are closing. People have lived for eons in these areas but at concentrations that dispersed the risk. Now a single, unavoidable event takes the lives of thousands, and there is little/no natural reserve....
