With lawmakers openly skeptical of his troop buildup, Mr. Bush will cast his plan for a gradual, limited withdrawal as a way to bring a divided America together -- even as he resists demands from those who want him to move much faster.

The prime-time address will be the eighth by Mr. Bush on Iraq since the invasion in March 2003, the latest iteration of his efforts to sketch what he calls "the way forward." It will be the first time he has described a plan for troop reductions, a radical departure for a president who has repeatedly defied his critics' calls to bring the troops home.

Yet as the president outlines his plan, his critics say he is trying to have it both ways. He is, they say, taking credit for a drawdown that has been envisioned since he first announced the current buildup on Jan. 10 -- a withdrawal that had to be carried out unless he was willing to take the politically unpalatable step of extending soldiers' tours further.

It should be interesting to see if he's found a new way to say "Stay the Course". Other than that it'll be anticlimactic unless he plans to beat the drum for Iran a bit more.

Oil hit $80. and up.

The US $ Dollar is sliding down losing its value.

The President wants $50 Billion US Dollars for the short term demands on the War in Iraq.

He intends on the war going on forever, at about $200 Billion US Dollars a year, lets see that's over 2 Trillion each decade. Is saving Iraq and hoping it becomes a democracy worth $6 to $8 Trillion US Dollars?

To think that Alaska, cost the United States $50 Million US Dollars, and after spending another $8 Trillion US Dollars, the only thing America will get out of it is a huge shopping mall, with a WalMart and McDonalds, brilliant, just brilliant.

The major Banks are increasing by $3.00 US, as a fee every-time you use your ATM machine to take out your money, taking a toll on your cash, all because, they are losing their shirts, for the Mortgage payments they are losing money on as more and more homeowners, go into default, and end up in foreclosure.

The US has never looked so good, as far as Bush is concerned. Then again he's certifiably insane, so your on your own now.

Regarding the Banks. Why would anyone pay $3.00 to get their own money??? Use a Credit Union. They don't charge.

Bush and Cheney are trying to get us to attack Iran because they are claiming potential WMD from their newly-energized Nuclear capabilities. This is a point of fact that Americans cannot confirm or deny. If they hadnt of "outed" Valerie Plame, America would have known for certain because her field of expertise was WMD and proliferation issues, specifically in the Middle East Theatre.
Bush and Cheney have treasonously exposed the American population to their interpretation of world events and are dooming us to join them in the End of Days. Of course, they and their families will be safely housed in a self-sustaining bunker and wont have a care in the world that is left after WW3 starts. I wonder if the Baby Jesus is PROUD of them, and their plans for America and the World at-large?

Withdrawing 30,000 troops from Iraq is like a sale at Macy's. Mark up the price, then mark it back down to the original price and call it a sale. In Bush's case, pretend you're sending 30,000 troops over to Iraq, and then when the screaming starts, pretend you're withdrawing them. Please the masses while keeping troop levels intact.

Safeway might have been a better example,
in my local but your point is obviously correct.
It's all a sick game of pass the buck to Dumbya.
It's not just the defeat, it's the after war recession!

Please point me to a poll that asks Americans whether they would rather continue to fight, or to lose now. Without such an honest poll question, I dispute your assertion that most Americans are willing to lose, now.

Everybody know that polls don't matter anyway...unless they're moving in the direction you want them to. At that point they become decisive.

Listening to Petraeus and Crocker this week I heard Al Qaeda this, Al Qaeda that, Al Qaeda will establish terrorist training camps if we leave , Al Qaeda's influence will spread to all the other nations in the region, Al Qaeda, Al Qaeda, and Al Qaeda.

How many Al Qaeda terrorists did they say have been killed or captured since the "SURGE" began? They could not recall!
How many Al Qaeda terrorists did they say are still in Iraq? They do not have a current estimate!
How long did they say will it take to kill or capture the remaining Al Qaeda in Iraq? They will back get to Congress in March 2008 with an Estimate!
How has 100,000 Iraqi's per month that are being displaced from their homes since the surge began to refugee camps, other nations, or to other areas of the same ethnicity affected the reduction in VIOLENCE? It has had some affect but we can not quantify it.
How long did they say will it take to "WIN" the WAR? We can only see 4 - 6 months into the future and we will not have won by then. We will give you a update in March 2008.
Did General Petraeus say the War in Iraq was making us safer here in the homeland? He said: " I'm not sure it is making America safer."

Note: The estimates of the size of Al Qaeda in Iraq according the Brookings Institution Iraq Index was less than 10 in January 2003, about 3000 in July 2006, and about 5000 in July 2007. The Reuters factbox talley indicates we have killed less than 200 since Jan. 2007.
The size of the Iraq Security Force is over 350,000 and over 200,000 of them can operate with minimal or no US Troop Support. What will they be doing if we draw down to a typical peacekeeping force of 45,000 troops?

I'll be on the edge of my chair untill the Decider-n-Chief explain when will win the WAR and bring our troops home.

One reason he's not sure whether it "makes America safer" is that he realizes the very nature of "asymmetrical warfare" is that Al Qaeda does and goes whatever and whereever it damn well pleases.

International insurgency.

Globalization of terrorism.

If US leaves, AQ is sure to follow in some shape or form, like that cop in one of Arnold's movies, the one who turns to quicksilver and then rematerializes.

Real reason US won't quit Iraq is a three letter word.

ornery - Perhaps the "Globalization of Terrorism" is directly related to the "Globilization of the Free Market" practices that the NeoCons are so fond of....

Why do we "assume" that OUR way is the best and should be pressed upon every other country in this world? If it were real Democracy and freedom I would understand, but they are only pushing their corporatism and greed.

I dont know who originally said this:
Terrorism is war conducted by the poor.
War is terrorism conducted by the rich.
