The question is: Do we want to place people in jails and prisons for weed?

Marijuana has been used to keep the best educated generation since WWII, out of American politics which is why our country is now a fascist corporate oligarchy hated all around the world..!

Simple as that..!

Could you clarify that? It can be interpreted several ways.

During daddy Bush, he had a CZAR to head his War on Drugs, I called that "Silenced in America by and American Czar". If you use the dictionary to look up czar, it tracks back to tyrant, despot.

This is a fascinating discussion. Funny, over a hundred comments for this question, but none for the question Bill put to Clinton about voting for the war. The paper and cotton industries help fund the opposition to legalization. They don't want their acres of trees and cotton plants to lose their value. Legalization has never been about America's health. I have lost friends to alcohol, cocaine, and meth, but never to weed. Why is it that every time our government declares "war" on something, it means a further weakening of our civil rights?

I thank Bill Maher for asking the question. I hope more people get the courage to get the discussion going. As you can see from the number of posts, there are people who want to talk about it. Plus, there are many people not in the discussion, it's the middle of the day. I think if they are going to start the election two years in advance of the election they need to talk about things people have opinions about. Not just photo ops.

We should decriminalize marijuana just like we should have decriminalized alcohol after prohibition!

You know, so that possession of alcohol would still be illegal, and would get you a fine if you were caught? So that organized crime could still control the distribution and profit from alcohol? So that consumption of alcohol would be hidden in underground bars, with no way of determining whether this glass of moonshine will blind you or not?

Senator Dodd is a spineless Democrat. Legalize cannabis, and don't give in to the "Reefer Madness" hysteria that the pharmaceutical companies are pushing.

At the very least, permit and fund large-scale clinical studies so that we can determine once and for all what the long-term health risks really are, whether or not there is a significant risk of psychosis, and whether or not cannabis has any true addictive properties or "gateway drug" effect.

There have been studies, done with our tax dollars. They were no released to the public because they did not conform to their end goals. Go to: http://www.jackherer.com/ there are actual copies of the results of the studies.

fuel
food
and
fiber

hemp biodiesel not corn ethanol
(not a food crop to disrupt food markets)

cannabis not pharmaceuticals
(easier on the individual, the culture and the world)

hemp oil is healthy, hemp seeds are tasty

hemp cellulose is quick to grow, easy to harvest and will last a long time (paper, fiberboard, cloth)

all these benefits and still the kind is better than the booze....

futhermore, hops is related to cannibis... so beer is pot

So, repeat after me:

HEMP FOR VICTORY IN THE WAR ON TERROR!

(p.s. I am not a hippie, too young. I don't want to return to the 1960s... although, with Vietnam being like Iraq, maybe we are there already.)

But when I call you Nigger,
Kike, Towel head,
Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey,
Beaner, Gook, or Chink
... You call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot
of violence against you,
so why are the ghettos the most
dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund.
You have Martin Luther King Day.
You have Black History Month.
You have Cesar Chavez Day.
You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.
You Have Yom Hashoah.
You have the NAACP.
And you have BET.

If we had WET
(White Entertainment Television)
... We'd be racists.

If we had a White Pride Day
... You would call us racists.

If we had White History Month
... We'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites
to "advance" OUR lives .
... We'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce,
a Black Chamber of Commerce,
and then we just have the plain
Chamber of Commerce.
Wonder who pays for that?

If we had a college fund that only gave
white students scholarships
... You know we'd be racists.

There are over 60 openly-proclaimed
Black-only Colleges in the US ,
yet if there were "White-only Colleges"
... THAT would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March,
you believed that you were
marching for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights,
... You would call us racists.

You are proud to be black,
brown, yellow and orange,
and you're not afraid to announce it.
But when we announce our white pride

... You call us racists.

You rob us,
carjack us,
and shoot at us.
But, when a white police officer
shoots a black gang member
or beats up a black drug-dealer
who is running from the LAW and
posing a threat to ALL of society
... You call him a racist.

I am proud.
... But, you call me a racist.

Why is it that only
whites
can be racists?

All humans are predisposed to racism, you twit. Your problem is that, as a white person, you'ver never suffered as a result of another's racism. Now that folks of other races are gaining in positions of economic and political power, domains once controlled only by whites, you're becoming paranoid that the tables could be turned on you.

Someone finally said it.

How many are actually paying attention to this?
There are African Americans,
Mexican Americans,
Asian Americans,
Arab Americans,
Native Americans, etc.
...And then there are just -
Americans.

You pass me on the street
and sneer in my direction.
You Call me "White boy,"
"Cracker," "Honkey,"
"Whitey," "Caveman,"
... And that's OK.

typical self centered baby boomer. We're in a war, the dollar is a joke, heath care is skyrocketing and you're trying to make sure you can get high.

FU.

Not everyone only cares about getting high. That's a distortion that is promoted to silence the voice of the people. We are in a war of choice and this admistration is making a joke of the dollar. While their friends get richer.

Damn right. Living in this country in the state it is in and not ever having my voice heard regarding the war, healthcare, losing my constitutional rights, I will right for a right to escape and be happy for a few and try to forget the mess this country is in.

For years, every time our state legislature was considering a medical marijuana bill, lobbyists funded by the pharmaceutical industry would swoop in and do their stuff and the bill would be nixed. You don't have to be Einstein to figure it out.
Many Americans are self-medicating now. Pot is the most widely used of all, and can be grown on windowsills. That represents an intolerable limit for the drug companies, who want to ban anything they can't sell us.

Far more people become addicted to, and die from the abuse of "legal" drugs as opposed to "illegal".

I know of no one that's died because of using marijuana. Many violent criminals are being released early to make room for someone who got caught with a small amount of marijuana or some other drug. Drug Addicts need to be sent to rehab, just like alcoholics.

The War on Drugs is a failure. Almost as big a failure as Bush's scam war on terror.

With all that is going on and at stake in this election and the HuffPoo's Mush-Off can manage is a class clown of zero intellect, asking the candidates giggle snort questions about pot, inanities about being 'fooled' by Bush and if voters are spoiled brats.

The only thing worse then this sort of BS in serious times is HuffPoo actually touting it as news and giggle farting her way through another wave of false headlines and inane uninformed blogentary.

Despite the fact that it's illegal, it hasn't stopped most people that want to smoke it from doing so. And now, the kids have found this new stuff at the local head shop that is still legal (for now), but gets you completely stupid in the head - much more so than MJ. It's a plant from Mexico, and it makes you hallucinate for a little while and then you're high for quite awhile. But just like E, the government will figure it out sooner or later and make it illegal, too. Not that it will stop anyone from using it. Making E illegal did nothing but boost it's black market value among ravers.

This is a VERY important topic, because not only is mary jane illegal, that makes most hemp illegal too. Hemp is a miracle plant. It grows anywhere and makes the strongest clothes, rope and paper of any resource anywhere. Plus since it's a grass, it doesn't strip the soil where it grows and does not require large amounts of water. This crop could be used for practically everything from food to supplies to energy. This crop could save the planet, so naturally the powers that be are against it.

Again, this is a VERY important issue that goes way beyond getting high in the privacy of your own body and your own home...

Back in the day :-) one would be arrested and charged with 'destroying the natural habitat of animals' in Nebraska for harvesting naturally growing marijuana (picking) in Nebraska. The hemp plant would stand during the winter and provide shelter for pheasants and other creatures. It was a Department of Natural resources violation. Fortunatly the never looked where my machete was swinging.

The Radical Right's opposition to legalization of Cannibis, like everything about the Republicans, reeks of hypocrisy.
They claim to be all for State's Rights and for small Federal Government. But when states pass medical cannabis laws, the Feds don't support the states at all.
In addition, the Republicanist Radical Right claims to love the Bible above all things, but when it comes to the Almighty Creator specifically telling humanity that 'all seeded herbs' are to be used by us, they of course respect their true god- money- over the One they claim to worship. Republicans say God was wrong about that one, He should not have made the plant, and they loudly proclaim that God had no right giving cannabis to humanity.
As usual the Republicans stand against God and their own avowed principles.
Those who actually want freedom of religious practice of course believe in freedom to follow God's own directions in terms of herbs and plants. Those that support making it illegal to follow the scriptural directive to use cannibis obviously have no love of religious freedom, nor respect for the creator.

Hemp is a GOD MADE SEED,all it takes is a seed. I think God new what he was doing, it can grow anywhere, it can hemorphadite (sp?) if no males are available. It can grow anywhere. If God hadn't known what he was doing they would have irradicated it. Hemp has the ability to go on. It tracks back to 17,000 BC. I don't think these guys are going to kill a plant made by God, they are just going to demonize the ones who support his creation.

They also had no problem with the supreme court ignoring state laws in Florida to give the 2000 "election" to W
