Rudolph W. Giuliani made New Yorkers three promises when he campaigned for mayor in the early 1990s: He would fix troubled schools, cut crime and boost the economy.

Today, the city is safer and has more jobs. But as Giuliani campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination, he says little about his problematic record on education.

New York City schools went through eight years of political chaos during Giuliani's terms, which ended in 2002. His bare-knuckle tactics contributed to the departure of three chancellors, according to interviews with former school administrators, Board of Education members, teachers, parents, union officials and outside experts.

Rudy took a third of the budgeted money from the poorest schools to rebuild Times Square for his wealthy cronies.
He will do the same if he becomes President.

If you think it's a disaster now, try electing Rudy (or any other idiot republican) and see how much worse it can get. You haven't begun to see disasters.

Vote Republican; it's easier than thinking . . . .

I don't care for Giuliani, and I think if he got elected, we'd likely see 14-15 trillion in red ink, and more dysfunction and bloat. Some people have never met a government program that they don't like, and for my nickel, he's one of them...

Rudy left those kids alone. Hang time with the sweet boys a priority.

Hillary is a religious nut. If she wasn't, Monica would not have had a chance.

Logic (and I use the word loosely) better applied to the Republican camp.

i'm not getting the whole Giuliani thing. the media reports have him as Bush's heir aparent. as a southerner, i just don't see my friends and neighbors voting for an italian catholic yankee with divorces and infidelities in his past and an accent like that. and i am even more perplexed by Mitt Romney's reception by the media with his somewhat non-babptist religious beliefs. i'm not saying religion or demographics should be issues, but southerners just dont like yankees--especially ones with the baggage those boys are a-totin'.

i STILL think McCain could pull it out if he wins a bunch of primaries. southerners like him, loose screws and all. and one day those good ole boys are going to wake up and realize that Gore and Hillary are more religious than most of the Reublican bozos.

McCain = Iraq.

That's how he knocked HIMSELF out.

Simple.

Rudy made 8 years of political chaos in NY
Bush made 8 yars of political and military chaos in the WORLD
Both are known to like to play dress-up
Both have employed and actively supported criminals.

See the similiarities??

I am a Yankee and I don't like these guys either. But of course I am liberal democrat. But you have to admit even Hilary comes across as having a good family life compared to some of republican goons. Why do democrats have the reputation of not being of faith. They just don't try to force their religious beliefs on everyone because church and state are separate - duh. I find them to be much more Christian like than religious freaks that are constantly calling everyone else sinners. Only God knows that information.

Democrates belief in the seperation of church and state. They also do not judge people by their faith or amount of faith. Like many college studies have shown the louder they boast about their regligious beliefs the more depraved and greedy they are.
Remember Jesus's word, "HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE".
These people who would cut your throat for a dollar will cast tons of stones in hopes no on takes a real close look at them.

I read a very interesting article in the latest Harper's (holy shit, this magazine costs like $8. I was like "what??!").

anyway, it was about education in American history, and it mentioned privatizing schools (and, this is my idea, to give every child $8/k year in school vouchers) but that has never really been tried.

NYC spends about $12k per kid per year on public education. (Most cities spend more.) Private education costs considerably more. Many families have more than one kid. Catholic schools are closing right and left -- and they're cheaper than non-parochial private schools. The public (surprisingly to most) pays for special ed needs of kids in private schools. Private schools get their pick of the kids, the public schools have to keep 'em all (with few exceptions).

These are just a few of the FACTS in the mix.

IF your goal is educating an entire generation of children in our society -- without taxing parents above $8k per kid -- vouchers are a non-starter.

How about vouchers for other universal services? e.g., we give out X dollars per year for you NOT to call 911?
