Despite the Iraq war's unpopularity, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Thursday that Congress lacks the votes to force a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops and will focus instead on putting a ceiling on the number deployed.

"One way of ending the war would be setting a timetable. We're about 15 votes short. Right now it doesn't look like we're going to get that many votes," Obama said, referring to the number needed to override an expected veto by President Bush.

The Dems may lack the votes to force Bush out of Iraq (or impeach) BUT THEY DON'T HAVE TO VOTE FOR BILLS THAT FURTHER GOP ENDS.

PLEASE NOTE: NO DEAL IS BETTER THAN A BAD DEAL, which is true in any negotiating situation, because you dig your own pit DEEPER. They can vote NO on bills they don't like instead of taking 5 cents and giving the GOP 95 cents on every deal they make.

We also need to replace Blue Dog Democrats in office (Dems who vote with GOP against Dems interests) ---they are GOP people infiltrating the Dem Party. Some Dem party members have already begun putting up new Dems to run against "our Blue Dogs" - join this effort nationwide!

We must Fight back with effective action and CONSTANT HARD-HITTING PR against the GOP...and not with wimpy protestations from our disorganized party officials or just complaints on blogs like this.

We can do much better - come'on!!!

Two problems, signing statements have let Bush rewrite the law, and Lieberman, he could change sides and with that one Senator mia and Cheneys vote the republicans take the Senate.

Democrats (I am one) are being dihonest.

The executive branch does not tell congress what money should be spent on.

Congress does not have to fund the War. They do not need a super majority to do so.

They can pass bills with a simple majority providing funds for a withdrawal only, and if Bush decides to veto let him.

They should keep sending back the same bill, but they are afraid of a backlash, so the coward and refuse to do it.

love obama but he lacks courage like the other demos. wants to be pres instead. defund the war obama.

but america still accepts the lies of the demos that they cannot do anything until they have the votes.

demos and repubs alike lie for power.

god american when will you give up your beloved two party system. they are both corrupt.

politics is about money now not people. why do you think we are in iraq?

Democrats are such a bunch of limp dicks.

And we're not just talking about Hillary Clinton and Barbara Boxer.

Perhaps Hussein Obama should whine about American policy in a totally friendly venue, such as Iran. I would have recommeded Syria, but Kucinich beat him to it. Darn it! Or perhaps Hussein could kill two birds with one stone...go to Venezuala with Danny Glover and Sean Penn to further engratiate himself with Hollywood wackos and other America hates.

I'm sure MoveOn.org has already made these recommendations.

Oh they all claim to get the troops out now.
Only no one has done a thing about it, nor signed the impeachment papers by Kucinich, nor
stopped Bush in any way. The DEM timeline has
been the same as Bush's, have you not noticed yet? And Bush said we will be in Iraq past
2009 - what does that tell you?

What does it take to get those votes? Republican votes. Those of you who have Republicans in DC (I do not!) should contact them and tell them you want out of this hideous banckrupting war..now..and that if they vote another penny to continue the war you won't vote for them again. If everyone who hates this war would do this..it might make a change. If the Republicans won't move we're stuck..but I think some of them will now..especially the people who won't be coming back -- Hagel, Warner..and let those who are up for relection know that you are watching them,. Remember it was the Republicans who dumped Nixon. Read today's Mark Morford in the San Francisco Chronicle..it applies to this.

sorry Obama thats a lie , all the dems need to do is cut the funding to end the war, so obama your no better then your repukes counterparts , JOHN EDWARDS is the only bright light dems have theY need to back him and Edwards will know who to pick for the second spot when the time comes cause at this time all Obama and Clinton are putting their foot in their mouths

If I were you I would not shower Edwards with so much praise. He and Hillary Clinton both voted to authorize the War. They did what was politically at the time the prudent thing to do.

If they did not know that was a vote for War, they are too stupid to be President.

And if they did, which most believe they did, they were playing politics with the lives of young Americans, and again to cowardly to be President.

And what excuse will Democratic leaders use after they gain the Presidency? - after they gain a strong majority?

The Dems won't get us out of Iraq. They'll offer nothing more than a small, meaningless token withdrawal. We're in Iraq for the long run.

TO THE DEMS

I have been meaning to write something like this for awhile because of your feckless responses and kowtowing to a president who is out to destroy this country. Why? Because you are cynical and political to an extreme. It is either that or you want to have all the stuff that is on the books now plus a war that you think will help you and without the blame. This is neither humanistic or morally defendable. Petraeus got what he deserves and cutting off funds for this war is the way to go because when it comes to priorities for this occupation it is contractors first and troops last. You can see this from any facts that you look at. So who cares for the troops? Some of you have been doing a lot of talking but nobody has thrown a rock at this glass house of an administration. Leave it to the people thru MoveOn.Org to do the heavy lifting for what you are supposed to be doing. You will not get my vote because you are no better than the repubs. Is there any difference in dictators, if one is a dem. or a repub? The way that you are acting you just want the whole pie for yourselves and forget the people again. I"m 71 and cant help but wonder what of the younger people? Because of your feckless nature it is a bleak future for them. Tony

Tony if you don't vote and we get Fred, the courts will be even more messed up. And if we nominate Senator Clinton every person who hates the Clintons will be motivated to get up off her lazyboy and vote for Fred. Vote for the Democrat no matter what. And call your Republicans and tell them you want out of this war!

So, right now, they don't have enough votes to override the squatters' veto. So keep sending it back to him and campaign to get the votes.

They KNOW that - this is bullshit and part of the reason I do not want Obama.

Kucinich and Gravel :)

This is the kind of weak willed fearful "leadership" we can expect from his stay the war profiteering course if he becomes President. Why not say NO MORE MONEY FOR Bush's folly.

I could agree with voting the Democratic leadership out of office next time around. I do hope that there are some really viable Democats put forward to oppose them, but in no way would I vote Republican... as they are killing this country.
