The most prominent figure in a U.S.-backed revolt of Sunni sheiks against al-Qaida in Iraq was killed Thursday by a bomb planted near his home in Anbar province, 10 days after he met with President Bush, police and tribal leaders said.

Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha was leader of the Anbar Salvation Council, also known as the Anbar Awakening -- an alliance of clans backing the Iraqi government and U.S. forces.

"The attack occurred one year after the goateed, charismatic, chain-smoking young sheik organized 25 Sunni Arab clans into an alliance against al-Qaida in Iraq, seeking to drive the terror movement from sanctuaries where it had flourished after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003."

Back when Rummy was fighting the Sunnis?

Imagine if the occupation forces had pulled out of Anbar rather than surging there. These Sunnis would be fighting the whoevers on their own.

This is another example of the liberal media running roughshod over the truth. While it's technically true that Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha was killed by an explosive device - the device damaged a relatively small percentage of his body. Many of his organs were undamaged. Does the liberal media tell you this - not a chance.
A year ago the IED would have damaged 57% more of Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha. The NYT won't mention in Friday's edition the good news - his head wasn't severed and that he was still recognizable as a human being.

Many commented on how unhappy he looked having his photo taken with the smiling idiot. Sure looked to me like he really didn't want to be in the same room. Could it have been that he knew he was a marked man just by doing so.

My thoughts exactly. He was savvy enough to know he was dead meat after having his photo with Bush flashed all over the world.

You Invade, make people become Refugees and DO NOT even accept them entering USA!!!!!

There are 2,000,000 Iraqi Refugees since US Illegal Invasion

This is the saddest news:
TWO Iraqi families recently arrived in Atlanta.

"It's a very slow response to this crisis," says Ellen Beattie, with the International Rescue Committee in Atlanta.

After just a trickle over the spring and summer, 529 refugees arrived in August. Sauerbrey says the goal is for another 500 to 700 to arrive by the end of this month.

Hmmm, maybe the descendants of the refugees will arrive eventually, I don't think too many of the original refugees will be alive 238 years from now. That is some streamlined system to deal with the crisis, I guess that's anexample of that American "ingenuity" that apparently some Americans supposedly posses.

"We will stop terrorism by occupying an oil rich Arab/Muslim country" - has got to be in the Stupidity Hall of Fame.

How on God's green earth can such insanity be tolerated by a nation that claims to be intelligent?

Set your clocks - in just a few hours GW Bush will personally eacort us through the Hall of Fame. 300 Billion dollar ticket please, and stay behind the velvet ropes so you don't touch the dead and dying.

Killing a human being is wrong and it would not solve any problems. However, if the Sheik was killed by Iraqis freedom fighters, and not by al Qaeda, the killing is understandable.

Thing about the Arab world is when you go looking for motive there are at least 5 people, groups etc who want to kill any given arab.

Abu Risha was an organizd crime figure in Ramadi. So the list of suspects involves Shias, Sunni Insurgents, Iraqi Interior ministry folks, Kurds, A rival Sunni Criminal gang or even an ambitious member of his own clan.

Hey HumeSkeptic...

It's good to see you've taken on a "God Complex", judging who is worthy of being murdered and who isn't. Kind of makes you seem like a Republican.

By the way, please read Al Jazeera's take on the Sheik. He was part of the solution.

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/B7A350EF-CAD1-4984-9B0F-DAC667C50453.htm

Your logic is mind-numbing. For someone who likes to point at poeple and judge them as stupid, you have proven with this post that you are less than a thinking man at times.

You've called me "depraved" recently, although you never justified it, and I don't think you can...

...I think your above comment is depraved.

And your "freedom fighters"... are you sure they are fighting for freedom? Or are they fighting for power?

What is "God Complex", Smelly? I never met the woman, so I don't know what her complex is.

"Your logic is mind-numbing." - Only to numb mind, Smelly, not to normal minds.

Freedom fighters are always fighting for freedom, otherwise they wouldn't be called freedom fighters. See the connection, Smelly?

Now, power might come with freedom, that's true. Just as we the people have more "power" after we kicked the British out.

Do you see now how stupid you are, Smelly?
