Orlando Sentinel:

I get a lot of questions about CBS' "Kid Nation." I can't answer most of them, because I haven't seen the show. It debuts at 8 p.m. Wednesday, but CBS hasn't made it available.

"Kid Nation" brings together 40 children to set up their own society, far away from their parents for 40 days. The show is the most controversial newcomer of the fall. The program has been accused of overworking the children.

Not so, said a Winter Park girl who takes part and her mother who let the girl do the show. They both defend "Kid Nation" in an article that I wrote for Friday's Sentinel.

I think the fact that the production company shopped around for the state with the loosest child labor laws speaks for itself. That and the fact that the contract protected the company from situations where the children, some as young as 8, might be sexually abused.

This was shear exploitation and both the production company and the parents should be ashamed of themselves.
