The New York Times:

Now that President Bush and General David H. Petraeus have charted their course for the Iraq war, Democrats in the Senate say one of their proposals aimed at shifting the president's strategy is finally close to winning enough Republican support for a real chance at being approved.

The proposal, by Senator Jim Webb, Democrat of Virginia, would require that troops spend as much time at home as on their most recent tour overseas before being redeployed. Top Democrats said the practical effect of adding time between deployments would be to force Gen. David H. Petraeus to withdraw troops on a substantially swifter timeline than the one he laid out before Congress earlier this week, and would protect troops from serving protracted and debilitating deployments.

Now the next step is to cut off the funding for the troops. The cynical part of me says, is this just a Democratic ploy to placate the voters so they'll win in 2008? No dis to any vets. It's just hard to believe anything.

Either way, the measure must be made to pass, and woe to any politician stupid enough to vote nay.

At this point I don't care WHY individual politicians work to end the war. All that matters is that they end the war. We'll deal with the purity of their motives, later.

["And cut off the funds."]

Bush would just leave them over there with no amo, or food just to spite congress. He is a vindictive little prick that doesn't give a shit about the military.

At what point do you think the troops will just say no? Refuse to go to Iraq? Stop enlisting like idiots? (I know the Republicans have made you poor and college farther out of reach than ever, but just don't enlist. Don't be dumb.)

Time for the Dems to fight dirty.

They must use any means at their disposal to get 100% out of Iraq now. We need a few more creative ideas like this one.

And cut off the funds.

It's about time some politician REALLY SUPPORTED THE TROOPS.

All Republicans can do is use the troops to stifle dialogue.

Republicans hate the troops.

Looks as if the British understand the reality a bit better:

In the Saturday Telegraph:

Basra troops 'will move to Kuwait'
By Thomas Harding in Basra
Last Updated: 3:34am BST 15/09/2007

"British troop numbers in Iraq are expected to be halved by December, with about 2,500 soldiers moving to Kuwait, The Daily Telegraph has learnt.

"A team of officers from Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood has spent the past week in Basra reviewing the number of soldiers needed following the withdrawal of the last battalion from Basra Palace a fortnight ago."

Guess Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Brown didn't listen to the speech last night.

Iraq is a huge success. Occupation in order to rob the oil was always the goal. Bush has achieved it.

Republicans are 100% to blame for every day this war goes on.

The Dems are cowards who are using this just to win votes by making the Repubs look bad by rejecting extended troop rest. If the Dems wre any better that the Repubs they would cut off funding. YOUR COUNTRY IS FUCKED!

The Dems are HEROES who are using this to make the Repubs afraid to vote against the troops.

I know that's what you meant.

Maybe Dems will cut off funding too.

"The Dems are cowards who are using this just to win votes by making the Repubs look bad by rejecting extended troop rest."

The Republicans make themselves look bad. They don't need any help. Besides, it's a way to get some of the false Democrats to eventually vote to cut off funds. Some of the less brain-dead Republicans may vote for this bill as well.

"If the Dems wre any better that the Repubs they would cut off funding."

The fact that you apparently feel the need for Democrats to cut off funding for the Iraq occupation proves your argument is false. There is absolutely no hope that the Republican side would ever contemplate cutting off funding.

Damned good idea, Webb! This will force the Repukes to either vote for the soldiers or vote for their dear Fuhrer Bush. If they vote against this bill, then they will truly be exposed and made extremely vulnerable in 08. Vote against it, Repukes and kiss your asses goodbye. And don't let the door hit in in the ass on the way out.
