The New York Times:

Now that President Bush and General David H. Petraeus have charted their course for the Iraq war, Democrats in the Senate say one of their proposals aimed at shifting the president's strategy is finally close to winning enough Republican support for a real chance at being approved.

The proposal, by Senator Jim Webb, Democrat of Virginia, would require that troops spend as much time at home as on their most recent tour overseas before being redeployed. Top Democrats said the practical effect of adding time between deployments would be to force Gen. David H. Petraeus to withdraw troops on a substantially swifter timeline than the one he laid out before Congress earlier this week, and would protect troops from serving protracted and debilitating deployments.

This is a great idea, and a good start.

Thank you, Senator Webb and Democrats.. this will help. But it does nothing about the Chimpie/Cheney run on the US treasury. Something will have to be done about their war profiteering.

This is good place for what I was going to post. I agree that this is a great tactic to force partial withdrawal, as they would have to tap other sources to replace the troops (draft?), and they are pretty much out of sources. I agree with you that legislation barring war profiteering would also be a good move. A law that mandates that Iraq's oil is for the Iraqis to use as they see fit. Remove the profit incentive and see how much longer we remain in Iraq.

In such circumstances, last week's Israeli air strike against a mystery site in northern Syria has triggered speculation over its motives. Israel has been silent about the attack. Syria complained to the UN security council but gave few details. Some say the target was Iranian weapons on their way to Hizbullah in Lebanon, or that the sortie was a dry run for a US-Israeli attack on Syria and Iran. There is even speculation that the Israelis took out a nuclear facility funded by Iran and supplied by North Korea

the same thing all the rest of this is about.

the same day bush gave his speech, ahmadinejad gave an interview to british television.

he expressed support for the palestinian people, and their government which includes hezbollah.

he also offered to help the americans leave iraq and that they leave the sorting out of iraq to him.

do you really think that the plane carrying nuclear weapons was the "oopsie" that the administration claims it was? come on. if you were the pilot, wouldn't you notice you had nuclear weapons on board?

i've been saying for a while now that the chess pieces are moving again. it's going to get a whole lot uglier.

if we want to save our soldiers' lives, we have no choice but a hasty withdrawal.

tell me, what was your first thought when you heard that the first thing bush did upon becoming president was to withdraw the signature of the united states from the international criminal court? it was one of his first official acts.

do you remember what he gave as the reason at the time?

'The American forces cannot even protect their great ally'

Published: 15 September 2007

The customers at the Shah Bandar café were sombre and anxious as they watched the news on television and talked about the repercussions of the killing of Abdul Sattar Abu Risha.

The common consensus was that violence will escalate even further and there was little chance of peace in the foreseeable future.

How do you defeat enemies who talk and write like this?

ISLAMIC STATE OF IRAQ MILITARY REPORT ISSUED SEPTEMBER 10, 2007

In The Name Of Allah The Most Gracious The Most Merciful

All praise be to Allah, The Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds. Peace and prayer be upon our prophet, Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

Two Martyrdom Operations Harvest The Lives Of 40 Apostates

Two fearless knights among the heroes of the Martyrs Brigade of Islamic State of Iraq, may Allah bless its men, on Wednesday 23 Shabaan 1428H corresponding to September 5, 2007 went forth to thwart the efforts of the enemies. The first hero breached a Police station in the Mualimeen district of Al-Katun in the Abu Zar Al Ghaffari area, may Allah have mercy on him in Diyali province. He cried, "Allahu Akbar!" and detonated his explosives belt. By the power of Allah, he destroyed those gathered there and spread them into pieces.

Following this blessed operation, as more forces gathered around the bodies of the dead in the station, another brother among the heroes plunged into the gathering of the apostates cried out "Allahu Akbar" and detonated his payload among them, blowing them to pieces by the power of Allah and reducing them burnt pieces.

The harvest of this blessed dual operation was more than 40 policemen from the so-called Interior Ministry and dozens more were fatally injured. Not only did the operations shake the ground beneath their feet, but it destroyed the base completely.

cont.

Four American vehicles and two mine sweepers destroyed

The American army sent some of its mechanized vehicles, that are continuously being destroyed, into the Abbarah area of Balad Ruz in the Anas An Nazeer district, may Allah have mercy on him" in the Diyali province and as usual it found itself in an ocean of road side bombs detonated with the most powerful of explosives. Four of the most powerful road side bombs were detonated on 4 American transport vehicles, all of which were blown to a thousand of metallic pieces that spread out for kilometers from the place of the explosion,. Fifty two soldiers were completely burnt.

After that two mine sweepers were completely destroyed, killing all those on board, when two roadside bombs were detonated on them. A number of senior officers were killed along with a prominent General. The Muslims, saying, "Allahu Akbar" disposed their rotting remains from the area. The American army is still incurring losses, and the harvest is endless, for it is by the will of Allah and capable of being even more. The number of the soldiers killed was in excess of sixty four cross worshippers and Allah is the fulfiller of His decree but most people know not. This operation took place on 24 Shabaan 1428 corresponding to September 6, 2007 and all praise and thanks is to Allah.

cont.

Four tanks, two minesweeper destroyed in battles in Buhraz

The cross worshippers carried out an attack in an attempt to take over one of the border villages of Buhraz on 21 Shabaan 1428 corresponding to September 3, 2007 but the soldiers of the Islamic State stood stubbornly in their way. Four roadside bombs were detonated on four tanks, and two of them were completely destroyed. The Ahl As-Sunnah joined their Mujahideen sons in the happiness as the sounds of "Allahu Akbar", Praise and Thanks grew loud in the area. Until now, the remains of the tanks and the soldiers are still lying on the roadsides and are walked on by the feet of the Muslim children.

As usual the crusaders wanted to avenge their dead, and tried to take over the same village again the following day. Two road side bombs were detonated that led to the destruction of two mine sweepers, by the grace of Allah, and they were defeated and humiliated, all praise and thanks is to Allah.

After nightfall in response to the failure, the cross worshippers bombed the area with F16 planes, dropping close to 30 bombs. The army of the Cross worshippers proceeded towards the area, but two land mines were detonated on them, with losses unknown. After that they withdrew on 26 Shabaan 1428 corresponding to September 8, 2007 dragging their feet in humiliation and disgrace.

You present what is known as a "false choice." Apparently, it's either "victory" or "surrender" with you. However, in the case of Iraq, none of these false choices apply. Withdrawing from an occupation of a foreign land cannot constitute a "surrender," since there is nobody to surrender to. Therefore, it is a withdrawal.

Now that we have invaded and occupied Iraq, though--and done it in the most clumsy fashion imaginable--we will soon be accepting thousands of Iraqi refugees into our country. Learning to speak Arabic may be just what the Captain ordered.

It's about time that our troops welfare is finally being given the serious attention it deserves. It should be an embarrassment to the Bush administration that they would callously disregard the essential needs of our troops -- more recovery time with family and friends at home. It's pretty simple.

While we're on the subject of "time away from home and family", why isn't there an uproar over Pres. Bush's signing of a treaty with the Iraqi government that would commit our military involvement in Iraq for an indefinite period of time?! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

What right does that idiot have to commit the US to a long-term situation that does not serve its best interests and security? There must be a way to overrule or rescind it. (I'm sure it has everything to do with oil. Hunt, a close friend and large contributor to Bush, and trustee of Halliburton, signed an independent oil deal with the Kurds, thereby making it virtually impossible for the central Iraqi government to negotiate an oil-sharing scenario with all of the provinces. This effectively insures continued chaos in Iraq and our continued presence.)

The Bush/Cheney regime had planned a permanent presence in Iraq from the outset. The "chaos" in Iraq was NOT unanticipated. The "chaos" was actually an integral part of the plan to build towards a permanent presence. They knew very well that the country would erupt in civil war and draw attention from Al-Qaeda in Pakistan as well. There was nothing accidental about it. The "chaos" was essential to an argument or justification for our continued military presence there.

IMPEACH the criminals! They are traitors to America. Their lust for profit has proven to exceed their allegiance to America.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:13 PM on 09/14/2007

Yes, I think there's a way to rescind the treaty Bush signed. If it is indeed a treaty, it'll need 67 votes in the Senate. He doesn't have that.

I'm not sure the chaos was planned. Or, at least, I hope it wasn't. I just don't wanna believe that actually planned the deaths of so many. It's bad enough they apparently don't care.

These social throwbacks, the bushlickers, have no consciences. This is all a big game to them, where they are gambling with other peoples money. Only it is also lives.
They frame it with false patriotism: terms like Freedom, Democracy, Honor; when they possess none of these.

Truly stupid and incompetent people could not have made the continuing series of "mistakes" that this criminal enterprise did. Thus, it all has been orchestrated and anticipated.
The war machine and its use is always about making money for already rich, cloistered racists and bigots; typified by the bush Crime Syndicate.

Sometimes Bu$h the Kick Ass Guy just enjoys getting them wounded...

Local injured soldier reacts to president's speech

A local man who was seriously injured while fighting the war in Iraq came home to Rochester Thursday. David Kendrick was shot in both legs in June in the Sadr City section of Baghdad.

Thursday was the day Kendrick's mom, Tammy Haley, had been waiting for since her son left for Iraq a year ago. Haley said, "We're just going to enjoy him and whatever he wants we're going to try and do for him." She has been anticipating it even more since June 17. Her son, Private First Class David Kendrick was on a mission that June day when he came under fire. Kendrick said, "We couldn't find where the bullets were coming from. The bullets were falling from the sky or something like that."

He was hit once in each leg. "It hit my artery and I just looked down I seen so much blood and my knee pointing in the wrong direction and everything like that. Like something out of a movie the way my leg was pointed," said Kendrick.

Eight surgeries later, Kendrick is able to walk on one leg, but has to use crutches because his left femur was shattered and he has some nerve damage to his foot. Kendrick says, "They're saying they can't determine I might walk with a limp or a cane. I can't put any weight on it at all right now my femur is so bad."

Kendrick and his family tuned in to the President's address Thursday night. He agrees with the plans to withdraw some troops, but he is not confident in the Iraqi forces. Kendrick said, "They have a lot of Iraqi police and national police. The thing is with them you don't know who to trust because with anything, over there if you get threatened by al-Qaida you're going to do what they say."

David Kendrick received a purple heart.
