The Bush administration's aggressive drive to promote oil and gas drilling on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains has sparked growing anger here among traditional Republican constituents who say that the stepped-up push for energy development is sullying some of the country's most majestic landscape.

The emerging backlash from ranchers and sportsmen, which is occurring despite an economic boom driven by drilling, is threatening GOP primacy in at least one corner of what has been a solidly Republican West. Long the most reliably conservative expanse of a state that has gone red in six of the past seven presidential contests, Colorado's western third shows evidence of the "purpling" that has made Colorado look increasingly like a swing state.

Wonderful, why didn't you come forward before Mr. Greenspan? You may possibly have had the influence to save some lives.

Thank you for telling us what we've FUCKING known all along. Oil is the overriding bigger picture--even above his so-called ideology.

Now, is anyone going to do anything about it?

huh? Ms. Pelosi? Still wanna stand on your policy of "impeachment off the table"? Prefer to let Mr. Bush go out as a lame duck?

Newsflash--he's no lame duck. He's a conniving War Criminal.

Impeach him now.

Whatever happened to Canadian "shale oil" as fed to the American people in one of the first SOTU addresses?

This is a preictable 'NIMBY' reaction, from these Western Slope Republicans...

Not In My BackYard!

If this was taking place in Park City Utah, Flagstaff or Sedona Arizona, or some of the pristine areas of Idaho, you could expect a similar reaction.

And you know who will be the first to abandon and betray these conservatives in the Western Slope? These very same conservatives who live elsewhere, in the Rockies.

These Bush neo-cons are cannibals and their version of "Lord Of The Flies", hasn't reached its' final act.

Park City, Utah is the home of fleeing Californians. If you think it is a hotbed of Republicans you are wrong.

Why are we extracting oil from the ground that fetches only $80 a barrel when we can leave it in the ground and get $100++ in the near future??

Anybody can sell a dollar for 90 cents. Bush finally found something he can succeed at.

This seems like just another case of people not being willing to look ahead because they were afraid they wouldn't like what they'd see. No one wanted to cut down on their consumption or consider alternative fuels so they just believed whoever told them there was no problem. What did they really think would happen?

NIMBY time is here and people will see first-hand what some of these same corporations have been doing in other parts of the world for years. It's tragic, but perhaps it's a necessary lesson. I hope someone learns something from it.

What's ridiculous is the way we complain. We scream about mideast oil, yet we bawl about producing more domestic oil. We whine about the environment, yet we refuse to develop alternative energy. We cry about gas prices but think other sources are too expensive.

Until we're willing to focus on alternative energy, we're stuck with oil. So do we stay a slave to the mideast or inconvenience a couple of caribou and dig in our own back yard?

Thats right, and you can't run your taxpayer subsidized bus or light rail system either. And you can't run the fishing fleet that catches your sashimi, or powers the lights in your free health care hospital.

Whats the big suprise? This administration has opened up huge areas for oil / gas expolration and almost no cost the the large Republican donor corporations. Hundres of thousands have been killed in Iraq for oil so why the outrage at damanging one of the most pristine environments in the US. Come on, its only the environment and most all of the big corporations don't give a shit about it anyway. Don't be shocked at what this administration has given away. George has it right. He wants to get out of office as quickly as possible so he can start reaping some of the benefits that he has given to his corporate cronies. Does this tell you how much he gives a shit about you and me and the country. Its all about the money.

No energy development equals no energy. Put that in your SUV relic of an earlier time. Why bother to develop energy resources when they'll just run-out anyway? It's OK, we can walk and heat our houses with wood until the forests are gone. For the time being we can continue to suck the Middle East tit. Lets not examine the future.

It's absolutely wonderful that the GOP's greatest PR disaster, obstacle to reelection/election and legislative policy opponent is George W. Bush. The dominance of greed and exploitation in the personal agenda of this failed and despised president leaves no room for political compromise even within the party who enabled him and protected him from accountability. He would not have come to power nor would he have been able to inflict the damage he has on them if they had not created the monster they must now live with. George W. Bush is only doing to Republicans what they helped him to do to Democrats. It's just that the GOP is so corrupt and hypocritical, they chose to ignore the likely possibility that he would do it them too when it suited his purposes. That's what they get for being loyal to and trusting someone so obviously dishonest, manipulative, heedless and uncontrollable. He is their Frankenstein egomaniac, and they can no longer provide for him the only thing he has ever wanted from them......unconditional obedience!

Ah the "not in my backyard" Republicans. Rather they'd blow the tops off mountains in West Virginia rather than punch a few billion holes in Colorado. It's already square - now it can look like Swiss cheese.

The true plan of the Bush administration is now unfolding. They are taking a page out of history when the colonial powers carved up China to control the opium trade("Carving of the Chinese mellon").
