An out-of-control wildfire raged through the San Bernardino National Forest on Sunday, keeping about 5,000 people from their homes in two mountain communities.

Firefighters struggled to contain the 18,000-acre blaze, which began Friday and was pushed by 20-mph winds through dense, dry brush.

Global warming not a problem? Wait till the droughts developing all around the world turn into tinderboxes.

I know if only we could go back to the good old days before all these natural disasters. Of course that time never occured but it's fun to dream. It's even funnier (sad actually) that nut-jobs claim the intensity of these acts of nature are increasing. Facts sure are annoying for the moonbats.

A friend recently camping in the Big Bear City area was told by the Forest Ranger that fires were PERMITTED to be built in the Pine Knot Campground, a Forest Service operation. It's bone-dry tinder. Several campers had raging campfires burning at night. Someone is screwing up bigtime around there.

well, since we got about 3 inches of rain total this year, I'm surprised the entire state is not up in flames.
We are one good Santa Ana wind storm away from disaster, and we're only weeks away from "Santa Ana season."
I've been here for 40 years and have never seen the hills so brown! They never even turned green in the Spring. It was weird.

here in palm springs we've gotten .5" of rain since july 2006...and that came by a sprinkle here and a sprinkle there. 3 years ago we had the wettest winter on record and the place was as green as county cork. not any more.

i can see the smoke from the fawnskin fire from where i'm now sitting. i hope everyone gets out alive.

the saddest part about the rain we had 3 years ago, was that we were unable to capture and store but a tiny percentage of it.

Have you read Mike Davis's "Ecology of Fear?" It's an interesting look at southern california's cycle of "disaster." I'm sure plenty of HuffPo left-coast haters would love the chapter title "The Case for letting Malibu Burn."

haven't heard of it. I'll have to check it out. I grew up in Newport Beach and then Laguna. I moved out of Malibu a couple years ago but miss it terribly. It's only 10 miles away now, but it's not the same. I cannot imagine ANYONE arguing a case for letting it burn. It's one of the most beautiful areas of Southern California, and for the most part, remains unspoiled, at least in comparison to OC beaches.

Listen here Britney, just because your career tanked on MTV doesn't give you the right to hope Malibu burns.

From such an inane question I would have to assume the fire ain't the only one smoking. Right wing dopers like Buckley and the extant example are so bizarre when they get stoned.

It will be events like this one that finally cause people to question the real causes of Climate Change. When all fingers point to humans, maybe then we'll take real action. I hope it's not already too late.

Maybe it takes losing everything for some people to get it.

There is also one near Julian in east San Diego County. It is threatening 3000 homes and people have evacuated. A tough fire to fight in that mountainous terrain.

Another fire started last week is still burning near Pine Valley, which is also in east San Diego County, but it is almost contained. This one was on more level ground and they were able to use bulldozers to get around it.

Holy crap this has to be the result of "man made global warming"!

Before the industrial revolution the earth didn't experience such horrible forest fires....Oh wait yes it did. Never mind.

I knew it would only take a few posts before some neo-scientist would link this fire to global warming. This is why you are considered nut-jobs.

Rain patterns are changing drastically throughout the world. From now on it will be either flood or drought, feast or famine.

Get used to it people. This is the world that we, in our greed, ignorance and stupidity , have created for ourselves.

It will only get worse with time.

As a matter of fact, rainfall patterns are changing right now in the Amazon. We are about to reach a tipping point there too. Beyond that there will be no going back to the way things were.

If I were you and I cared, I would get busy writing letters to world leaders and doing anything I could to stop it.

PerryClease - Just got back from Green Valley Lake after loading a truck full of stuff my sister can't lose.

As usual, some dipshit is running around starting these fires.

Arson should be an automatic death penalty.

Darwinman, stfu you idiot.

The one near Pine Valley was attributed to an "illegal" campfire. Now if that is a campfire started illegally by a hiker or camper or a campfire started by an "illegal/undocumented alien" remains to be seen. However, I can tell you that the last time I hiked in that area it was obvious to me that the trails are/were being used by people wanting to avoid the Border Patrol.

I have not yet heard that they found the source of the fire near Julian. It started in the area known as "Angel's Landing" which has a number of homes, bed and breakfast establishments, and such; So it could have been from a BBQ, spark from landscaping equipment, electrical problem, or arson.

Arson is a capital offense, particularly when it results in deaths. That idiot that started the big Cedar Fire a few years ago, his gene pool must have been laced with chlorine. He goes hunting and reportedly didn't eat a breakfast, didn't have enough drinking water, no snacks or meals with him, late in the afternoon his sugar level bottomed out and he is disoriented so he lights a signal fire. He gets picked up by a helicopter and the pilot reports that the signal fire is now a small brushfire. It as getting dark and the dispatcher would not let them fight the fire and that they would take care of it the next day. The next day was too late, it was a real big fire http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cedar_Fire
