Slate Magazine:

Pinch Sulzberger's attempt to put his prized columnists behind a subscription wall on the theory that they were so much better than free bloggers that people would pay for them--is finally so doomed it's actually dead, dead, dead, as of midnight tomorrow. ... You see, it's really a success story! It "met expectations." It's just that online ad growth was so much higher it was more profitable to not charge readers and thereby get more of them! I mean, who could have foreseen that (except everyone else in the industry)?... P.S.: Always trust content from kausfiles. Also, I told you so. [You're running out of enemies--ed Burkle, Bangle--what are they, chopped liver? Anyway, Sulzberger hasn't lost his job, yet.]

About time. Now if only they would hand out walking papers to David Brooks and Thomas Friedman. I'll hold my breath.

When I heard that The New York Times was putting it's famed columnists behind that Times Select firewall, my first thought was exactly the same as when I heard about New Coke in 1985 and heard that CBS hired Katie Couric to do the Evening News last year! THIS IS A REALLY BAD IDEA! LOL!

Now, if we can get Anheiser Busch to wave the fees on Bud Select, we'll have something there.

I like the Times, I think most people just hate it for the reason that it either didn't expose Bush for the lying sack of shit he was/is or hate it for "treason".

It has good news stories and I still think they are a hundred time more reliable in their reporting overall than any of the MSM by miles.

I subscribe. I know the difference between bullshit and truth, doesn't mean the other 95 percent of the stories are not well reported.

Get over it already.

It's about time that was so stupid and when I stopped reading them for the most part..

Why should you pay to read editorials..?

What a fucking moron JR. is and a sell out that kept Bush in office when he could have revealed the wiretap scandal and saved America..

Little cock sucker and I see him riding his motorcycle around here..

Little prick...!

Why read the Times when you can just as easily get it from bush.

The New York Judy Miller Times doesn't have enough credibility left to expect people to pay for anything.

I have missed the columns, but stopped reading the Times after the Judy Miller mess, and I vowed they would never get another penny of my money. That's been an easy vow to keep.

it is great news though that it is now more profitable to max number of readers exposed to ads as opposed to nick readers a few bucks to read. that is a great development,
but then it's also possble that they wanted to limit exposure to the wrongness of thomas friedman as it unfolded during the colonization of iraq.

Damn.

People not paying money to read Maureen Dowdy.

Who would have ever imagined that?

I like Maureen Dowd, and as long as I have to pay money to Judy Miller's Times to read her, I cannot read her, because I will not do it.

Man, this'd be GREAT news if I still read anything in the TIMES--but their SELECT online charges effectively made me seek my news elsewhere--and I'm happier at the Huffington Post than I was at NYT, so they've just cut off their noses to spite their faces--too bad--now Maureen Dowd won't be able to afford her next facelift...spinster for life.

.

Fees for Judy Miller's columns will remain unchanged: 100,000 dead Iraqis and 3,750 dead US troops.

I stopped looking after time select was introduced. I missed Maureen Dowd and her humor

I stopped reading *anything* the NYT had to say months ago. their hawkish agenda is so transparent. it should be called the New Hawk Times.
