AP :

A university student with a history of taping his own practical jokes was Tasered by campus police and arrested after loudly and repeatedly trying to ask U.S. Senator John Kerry questions during a campus forum.

Andrew Meyer, 21, spent a night in jail before his release Tuesday morning. His attorney, Robert Griscti, did not return messages seeking comment.

The photo for this article on Huffpo's front page shows a new camera angle. If you're sensitive and you watch the tape, it's fakey. The fellow bounds around ostentatiously and appears to be acting. The cops look ineffectual in a way real cops generally do not. Tasers produce temporary paralysis yet the fellow's response is to yell, "Ow! Ow! Ow!" We're not told where the tape supposedly came from.

It's not that I don't believe in police brutality. In the real world, it happens a lot. But this particular video doesn't look authentic.

Why would the corporate monopoly media put out a fake video featuring mock police tasering? It's anybody's guess. Maybe they want to inure us to more blatant police violence? Maybe they want to "test the waters" and see how we respond?

And thank you for coming in and putting the cherry on this bat shit crazy sunday.

Folks this a real treat, you can never know when some of the 9-11 truthers will stumble into a post and add such a pearl of wisdom.

A comment that is so out of left field, so truly genius in its insanity that it is absolutely awe inspiring.

Its comments like this that makes huffpo great.

That and bitchslapping getoffmeds and human skeptic.

Wow, 20 pages of nothing but garbage.

All we need to know about this incident is this;

1. It also happens when Republicrats are trying to enlighten the world.

2. Sure John, you had a plan, right??

This topic has been nothing but red meat for Bushbots, Rushbots, false assertion trolls, neo-Swiftboaters and Kerry haters in general.

Go watch the video one more time and focus on the FACT Senator Kerry wanted to answer this terrorized young man's questions.

The bulk of the responses on this topic is precisely what is wrong with our once great country.

YOU PEOPLE ARE ASSHOLES! Simple as that.

The "don't taze me bro" comment was, in of itself, enough to warrant Pocket Sparky just from its idiocy. The "democracy sky is falling" freedom fighters have paddled to this jackass wannabe's defense like intellectual guppies, having taken his bait full swill.

He was a prankster looking for attention and this was entirely a set-up event. The Q&A had ENDED folks when he began his youtube moment and pounced on the mike.

As for the UF police, they probably felt it was better for the other students to opt for the taser instead of any spray which stood the likely chance of hitting innocents because it was such a closed in area. Had they taken their force level to a higher degree, in all likelihood, the individual may have been injured from a sprained wrist or arm. If you've ever been tasered, you would know that his reaction was definitely a bit melodramatic and certainly part of his intent to make this more than what it should have been. Had he simply followed the officers instructions from the beginning, this would be one big yawn which unfortunately for the rest of us, wasn't this idiot's intent from the get-go.

Congrats for giving him EXACTLY what he wanted.

I posted this comment earlier, but have seen no response to it. Am I imagining that we as a society don't want to deal with this schism in our collective mind?

I am somewhat confused by the widespread coverage this is getting in contrast to the coverage of Yearwood's arrest and physical injury a few days ago..

I saw a young man who was acting totally obnoxious, interfering with others' desire to ask questions, hogging the spotlight and being totally rude, than resisting when asked to stop, even when Kerry said he'd answer the question, then resisting being arrested for disturbing the peace, then dealt with by excessive force, but still resisting.

Now contrast that with the violence outside the hearings where Rev Yearwood was being challenged. He did not resist, or struggle, nor was he rude. He suffered a severely damaged ankle as a result of the excessive force.

The media coverage for that was probably a 1/10th that received by this Florida incident. Why?

Do I really need to ask that question?

No, its pretty rhetorical,

Andy is getting his run here and the other loony bins simply because he put the two magic words "bush" and "impeach" together in the same sentence.

Regardless of anything else, that is enough to make you a hufftard hero.

I answered you, granmab, but I'll reiterate. I have total sympathy for Rev. Yearwood, and on the surface, he's probably a much, much better person than this young man. However, just because someone is obnoxious and loud-mouthed does not mean he can be zapped with electricity. Don't you think if they get away with it, it will start popping up all over the country? People who are protesting the war would get zapped for hunkering down to resist arrest, WHICH IS WHAT THE REV. YEARWOOD DID. This young man was a physical threat to no one, and I am wondering how many colleges and universities across the country are providing poorly qualified campus police with these weapons. Finally, I think the Rev. Yearwood himself would be on this young man's side.

That nutcase got what he deserved. They gave him plenty of warning, allow the handcuffs on or be tased. It was his choice.

Not to mention that his only motive was to cause a disturbance and get it on camera.

Kudos to Arianna, RAW, and C & L for covering this story. C & L cut the comments off at nearly 600, but that may be due to technicalities this non-geek doesn't understand. I am disappointed that some of the other big names in the blogs did not touch it because there are all sorts of questions the story raises. For example, how wide is the provision of tasers in colleges and universities across the country, and where else are they available? Where will they be used next? Peace demonstrations? Do the people they're given to have good judgement? And so on.

This entire event was staged. The "tased" goof ball was a dork. He squeeled like a pig stuck under a gate long after he received the voltage. Just another pathetic attempt of a leftist campus dork with no life attempting to make a forum all about him. And guess who laps it up like a starving dog? Say it ain't so batman!

I watched a number of tapes of this incident, and as far as I am concerned Kerry has lost his courage and my respect. He stood by and mumbled when he should have stood up and protested- but hey that is his style these days and why he will never be presisdent.

This type of reaction from Law Enforcement is becoming all to common in our (so-called) Democratic Society. This "shoot from the hip" mentality and ask questions later seems to be more the norm these days. We keep hearing about all this sensitivity training given Law Enforcement but you never see it. Like Waco, Rodney King or that poor soul in New York City gunned down in a hallway by a hail of bullets from several Cops...the man was not armed and did not pose a threat to anyone... A man yielding a knife in the middle of a street..was by himself with no one around him..told by local police to put the knife down and did not do so..probably mentally disturbed..was shot dead!! Makes absolutely no sense and frightening to think where we are heading as a society. Most incidences of this kind can be totally avoided but common sense and logic is being overtaken by violent reaction. This particular incident at this college is but one more example of Law Enforcement going to far. Tasers kill people and for what this man had done will never justify its use and its potential deadly outcome.

And what would you have had these officers do to control the situation? He was causing a disturbance, then he became beligerant and resisted. When does his right to free speech give him the right to be a nuissence?

He got what he wanted, he got his 15 minutes of fame.

Your distrust (hate) of law enforcement clouds your judgement. Law enforcement abuses happen, but considering how often officers interact with the citizens it is a remarkable low number.

If five bigs cops can't handle one unarmed demonstrator with zapping him with a potentially lethal bolt of electricity (what if the guy had a pacemaker?), then there is something seriously wrong with the training these cops receive.

The bottom line is that the guy shouldn't have been arrested in the first place.

There was no reason to arrest the man. What the hell happened to free speech. I don't care if you think he was annoying or a nusiance.

This was a clear case of police harrassment.

When police overstep their authority, citizens have every right to protest as did this young man, and good for him.

When the freaking gestapo comes to haul us away, I for one am going out with a fight. And don't think this is an exaggeration or that I some sort of hysterical wing nut. We are living in a country where habeus corpus and free speech are being trampled, and these are the pillars of democracy, way more important than even the right to vote (which we have also lost by the way).

Thank you for the clear and precise explanation of how the system works at these types of meetings. If that be the case, then it seems that this young student was removed by the consent and command of his fellows.

I can see by your explication that this is therefore a local incident that shows nothing more than the internal security of the campus to be in need of a correct training procedure in the removal of unruly students and that this type of behaviour is not politically designed or orchestrated to the determent of the general populous as it was empowered and commanded by the student population of the university. More shame on their shoulders!

Sadly, it will be, yet again, the local taxpayer that will pay the price of an ill-trained officer while the politico’s will benefit by turning this local incident to their benefit.

On the issue of the behaviour of the speaker and in his defence, it is normal for a speaker, if interrupted, to continue with a lecture and I can understand his letting the security employed and empowered by his hosts for the safety of all, to be allowed to get on with their job, trusting that they have been trained to do so within the laws of the land.

Does Kerry and this jerk think they were the only important people in this saga? There was an auditorium full of OTHER people who obeyed the rules, did not disrupt the event with profanities and diatribes and would have not resisted arrest. Kerry and this asshole need to get over themselves. Their opinions on what happened are no more important than those in attendence who had to endure a self-consumed baby get his way. What is really frustrating is that I agree with what the kid was trying to say, but feel he should have been tasered as soon as he cut in line!

As soon as he cut in line? Geez! I didn't agree with a thing he said, but I think I would have done what the cops did and waited until after he escalated the thing and after he had been told to put his hands behind his back a half a dozen times.

Many WWII concentration camps and extermination camps were built next to German cities. Often these cities were chosen for their huge Nazi membership and fascist leanings.

Yet, despite the fact that these fascists had to wipe off human ash from their streets and from their cars and breathed hazy air, they denied that anything "alleged" by those "communist and enemy sympathisers" were true.

Then Gen. of the Army Dwight Eisenhower made the townspeople of these camps march through the crematoria and see the human carnage wrought by these rightwingnuts.

The price for the safeguard of liberty and freedom is vigilance against the fascists in all nations.

Senator Kerry gave his soul to the International Corporate elites decades ago. He sold his soul first in a coffin at Yale. When asked, Bonesmen like the two Bushes or the two Chafees' or Kerry never respond beyond dismissing its importance, denying its true mission, and indicating that it is a secret society with secrets, of course.

Yes, the sheeple youth are awakening to the fact that the world is divided among the masses.......billions of persons.....and the few families who still manipulate the planet for their own greedy and nefarious ends.
